Bungie's Marathon set for April 12th reveal

GHG GHG , congratulations, you are now people like me.

To be fair i think a lot of the hate also comes from the anti GAAS Sony crowd who blame Bungie for various things.

Combination of both for sure.

Just weird to see some of it coming from predominantly Xbox fans who all LOVED GaaS shooters (and still do - ESPECIALLY FROM BUNGIE!), and yet there's all this suspicion of it failing. This is a group of people that should love this kind of game.

It's frankly bizarre, especially when Marathon is coming out still on Xbox.

It's exactly what's happening and a large part of why Concord wasn't successful. You had to many groups opposed to Concord being successful, people who wanted it to fail because they saw it as woke, sony fans who wanted it to fail because they want single player games, PC fans who wanted it to fail because they don't want to see Sony get increased market share on PC, Xbox fans who wanted it to fail because the game wasn't on Xbox, Nintendo fans who wanted it to fail because they see Sony as competition as well. Then you had supporters of current hero shooters who talked shit about it without playing it because they didn't want to see their own communities dwinddle.

None of this was helped by a steep price for a hero shooter when all the other hero shooters were F2P.

Marathon has a lot more going for it as of right now. It doesn't appear at least on the surface to push any political buttons, it has built in support from Bungie fans, it has a new exciting genre that hasn't been tapped much at the AAA level. I think you still have Sony fans against it because it is GaaS, and you still have some Microsoft fans who are butthurt about Bungie belonging to Sony, but of course you still have Bungie fans among Xbox fans.

It'll be F2P with a microtransaction model if Destiny 2 is anything to go by.

Yes, I know...

The game is on PS5, PC, and Xbox, meaning pretty much anyone can play. If it is F2P the barrier of entry will be super low, but it's a much more difficult model to sustain, especially if you're trying to sustain that in conjunction with Destiny.

Because it is Bungie, pretty much everyone (who is interested in these types of games) will give it a shot at least in Beta.

If the game is successful, it'll be interesting to see how Bungie manages it and Destiny and if they'll start hiring en masse again. It's why I felt it was premature to just shutter Firewalk. They could have turned into a Bungie subsidiary studio. I think Sony could have tried to reorient Concord as a F2P game before launch after the beta failed. Delayed the game for 6-12 months.

Yeh skill up posted about having spent some time there the other day.

My expectations couldn't be lower for this one. Still pissed off with them deciding to do this with the IP instead of creating a new one.

True. And Marathon has always been shit.

I remember my friend getting it for his Mac when we were in hs (96-97) and he thought it was the hot shit. Meanwhile I'm playing Doom 2, Duke and Quake 1 and couldn't have been more disgusted.

A real Beavis & Butthead "What the hell is this crap?" moment.

Most people have no clue what Marathon is. It's a dead IP that came out decades ago...

Bungie reviving it is just sort of a cool retro thing to do with an IP that has a very distinct and cool look to it.

He just said it lacked a soul and 10 minutes in found himself wanting to play something else

Didn't really go into specifics

Well we'll see if your friend is right soon enough. I'm guessing his opinion is an outlier.

Lacking soul is an odd comment for something that already looks extremely distinct and unique in the market. Lacking soul is the last thing I'd claim about what we've seen from the released trailer and music.

The soundtrack is great from what I listened to yesterday.

Coupled with the art style it has a great atmosphere going on.

Please don't be shit.

it seems rumors were true after all.

i think the art direction is going to do a lot of heavy lifting.. for about 10 minutes
The rumours from 18 months ago are true because some dudes mate on the internet played it for ten minutes?

Surely that just more rumours not confirmation.

someone on twitter was basically saying they hope the actual game (and more specifically the character designs) have a similar style to the reveal trailer and Joeseph Cross (the art director) replied "I think you will be happy".

Yeah the art from the ARG the other day seems to look fairly similar to the initial trailer.

Or... people who play games just fucking hate Destiny 2 creators for all the fuckery they've had to endure from trying to enjoy that franchise.

It looks cool from an aesthetics point of view but I have no idea whether I will appreciate the gameplay or not.
I haven't played any extraction shooters and have a pretty limited experience of hero shooters. From what I've come to understand Escape from Tarkov is pretty hardcore compared to other multiplayer fps games, I deem it somewhat likely that Bungie are aiming at making Marathon more accessible than Tarkov. Would be nice to see the Bungie-acquisition make a turnaround. because so far it has only come across as a disaster.

I appreciate the resuscitation attempt but like GHG GHG said, I wish they would've just made a new, non GAAS bullshit IP.

I have zero interest in Marathon. Absolute zero fam.

Cool, well you do you.

Bungie is a GaaS studio though. That's the games they make. If you don't like them, they aren't for you. They aren't going to suddenly make a Souls borne title.

I feel like people are just hoping for this game to fail for some odd reason even though bungie have a pretty good track record. Bungie know how to make playing a shooter fun, so i think they'll personally succeed on the feel of this game. If they can make the content interesting and expansive enough on launch to feel worth it then this game will be a hit.

I always thought extraction shooters have great potential to be the next big hit. But over the years they acquired a bad reputation by all the half baked attempts to make a quick score.

This is the first big budget attempt by a renowned developer. So if this doesn't stick either I will stand corrected.

I've got some high hopes, though.

But did you delve into the forum communities, all the issues, retractions, drip feeds, nerfs etc. ? If so, my condolences.
Lol. Some of my favourite gaming memories have come from playing that game. I dont need your condolences my friend.

Thousands of hours in crucible, thousands in halo... I'm a pvp guy and extraction games can fuck right off, I feel this will flop big time and it's an easy pass however if miraculously it feels more like a true bungie pvp game and the extraction stuff isn't that over bearing I may try it, but I'm not counting on it tbh.

Almost everyone that made bungie what it is gone at this point. Doesn't necessarily mean it will be a bad game, but in this industry the people are the #1 asset that makes a studio and a brand what it is. For "old bungie" farts like me it's really hard to look past that.

Sure, great time highs, but also dirty lows. They constantly did shit like fuck the crucible players repeatedly by not supporting it properly, or fixing mm to any acceptable degree, every once in a blue moon add old maps, constantly retool strikes etc. I can go on and on...

Anyone would have to be bat shit insane to jump back into that nightmare cycle again with a fresh coat of paint.

Why do people keep telling this lie?

Why? Makes perfect sense from a marketing perspective. Get the streamers onside who's audience your game is targeting.

Sure beats paying IGN instead.
I don't disagree but that is just choosing the lesser of two evils. It may not even be the lesser either.

It makes perfect sense to promote it in this way, I agree. I still don't like it. First of all, it hampers transparency imo. Even if they do admit it I'm sure it can, and does, change their mindset. As you put it, they (the streamer), shouldn't be won over by things, but by the game. It's not how it works in reality of course but I still don't like it.

The next reason is way more simple. It makes me jealous lol. I didn't get that stuff or the information. I won't lie, that's a big part of it

Im honestly offended by how my 10 year tenure in destiny ended with them shitting harder than fuck on crucible. I absolutely loved the chaotic fun one of a kind feel that was crucible pvp, thousands and thousands of matched, trials runs, iron banner... Just was all phenomenal until the last few years when they nerfed my Not Forgotten it all took a turn and I can't believe the neglect, Its like it was so much neglect to pvp it should be a lawsuit, just awful.

Quitting D2 was finally one of the best gaming moves I had made in years.

Sure it had its lows, I dropped it before Lightfall due to the lack of PVP support but came back for the Final shape. But what about the highs? VOG, WOTM, Last Wish. Whisper mission. Claiming my Not forgotten (Solo no less) I could go on.

Just Like a relationship it had its highs and lows but the highs outweighed the lows by a significant margin. Nothing quite like a decent Destiny raid with friends, I got my monies worth and then some.

IP is old or new is irrelevant. One look at the art style in the new trailer and people will be hyped. Bungie is not counting on old Marathon players anyway, they know nobody knows.

Also nobody has ever accused Bungie of bad graphics or bad gameplay. Gameplay so good they rode Destiny 2 train by sheer greediness and people still played for more than 5 years of its expected life. If wasn't for Lightfall I believe Destiny would still have x2 more players than current Steam most played Rank#45 than its usual #12 before 2023.

Yeah, it was a journey, for sure. Glad you enjoyed it more than not, and I did too at some level. Was part of some great clans, especially D1, when the game felt fresh and had features previously unseen in console gaming. One thing that really pissed me off was D2 being a full priced game, then going f2p.

No? Lots of OGs still around

Yeah be nice if every once in a while they sent these boxes of merchandise and invites to a few random players as well (me for example).

Have they ever indicated that Marathon will have arena style play at all? I don't think they have. But I always haven't fully paid attention to bungie stuff since quitting D2
