BURNOUT LEGENDS OMG OMG OMG!

Yeah, I've seen cars go through the track before when they switch to the takedown camera.

There also appears to be visible texture seams on certain tracks (with little white dots between them).

PS2 Revenge >>> XBOX Revenge >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> PSP Legends

Legends looks worse than Wipeout Pure and Ridge Racers IMO. More complex, but rather messy. No mipmapping (=lots of shimmering), very jagged, bland lighting, 30 fps, etc.

Maybe I'm being a bit too harsh, though, as I played Revenge first. Revenge is truly stunning in motion. The lighting and effects are just unreal.

I agree with all of this. But this morning they showed the new Tiger Woods on Cold Pizza and graphically the jump from last year's game was noticeable and VERY impressive. I am sure the next PSP Burnout will follow in the same footsteps. With that said, the game is really fun, but not polished at all graphically. For me, this has caused some crashes as I can't make out what is coming up at me until the last second on the tracks that are new to me.

I don't think it looks as good as Ridge Racers, but it's more fun. Definitely my favorite racer on PSP. Doesn't feel buggy or rushed though I agree there are some light rough spots in bringing such a complex experience to a handheld. I think it's wonderful. But GAF hates everything.

I'm getting the impression from recent vids and complaints mentioned a few days ago by those who obtained 'early' copies (yes, I know) but have since been corroborated as still issues in the final release with impressions from people like dark10x.

It's not a matter of setting my expectations in the hopes this would better match the most recent console versions, I wasn't expecting that at all. I was just hoping to see a game that was better crafted for the PSP hardware like the PSP's existing top racing experiences are (RR and WiP), because being specifically crafted to the capabilities of the target hardware has been part of what's made the Burnout series such an enjoyable gameplay experience for me through its first three iterations. BL just looks/sounds like ported and downgraded console assets. That it still makes for a good port doesn't change the fact for me that something significant has been lost that made Burnout games enjoyable.

End rant. I apologize if I rained on anyone's parade.

Jarrod, its EA Chertsey, apparently.

Maybe I'm being a bit too harsh, though, as I played Revenge first. Revenge is truly stunning in motion. The lighting and effects are just unreal. Hard to believe they pulled this off on PS2. Looks better than some of the new 360 games shown (like TXR360).

The complexity and geometry is definitelly the best point BL has to offer. As you claim it has a lot of jaggies and the lightning is not on par with Ridge Racers. Then there is the 30FPS thing but the fact is that BL is 30000 times faster. The lightning has been tunned down a lot, they removed at least one layer of texturing on the cars but well if RR is an example of how we should expect reflective layers to be then I think they did a good thing. In RR it was very pixelated.
About the shimmering...I have only seen it on the crash mode...Not in normal races...but yes it's very nasty.

I think part of the problem is that the screen is just TOO busy. There is so much crammed in there and the image is so "raw" that the whole thing just looks a bit messy at times.

Seriously, though, for all the complaining, the game is extremely fun and feels great.

Yeah, just bump up the graphics for the next Burnout, and it will be perfect. I am enjoying this one as it is though.

My impressions -

wow, looks amazing thanks to the screen which still looks as brilliant as the day I got it. Graphics are good and the framerate is solid 99% of the time. It seems to stutter on rare occasion, but it's no big deal. For 30fps, it still moves pretty fast. Controls are good but my right thumb started to hurt after the 3rd straight hour, which is understandable. Loadtimes in Crash are a little annoying, so I'm only playing Tour mode where the load times are decent. Its more relative than anything - 15 seconds for a 15 second Crash event or 12 seconds for a 5 minute race.

Overall, I'm very impressed. It will definately help me pass the time until GTA comes out.

point is that burnout L. is the best psp game ever. graphics can sit out this time since im a graphics whore. i couldnt believe how i was sweating for a psp game!

I dunno about the PS2>Xbox bullshit.
As far as graphics go, he's actually right. The framebuffer effects in Xbox version are visibly scaled down. There's no custom soundtracks on PS2 version, though.

Yes, the PS2 version absolutely looks better. There is no doubt about that. Right from the very first track, the differences really stand out.

The extra loading, though. Really kind of annoying. I feel rather torn about the game and almost a bit upset. Basically, there is no version of Revenge that gets everything right. :\

How much longer are the load times? They weren't too bad in the previous installment.

It takes 10 seconds to load a race on PS2 and 5 seconds on XBOX.

That's not a problem by itself, however. The problem is that, when you have to retry a race, the game must reload the data. Not a problem at first, but I know this will become a serious issue later on...

did anyone tested the multiplayer car unlocking mode yet? its feels a bit strange to me, that you have to meet other burnout legends player to unlock all cars.

Did you play Burnout 3? Which version?

Just picked this up today. My faith in the genre has been restored. I had never played a Burnout game before, but holy shit I must say I'm a huge fan now. All EA has to do is release a Road Rash game for PSP and all will be right with the world!

Playing Legends is really hard if you've been on a binge of Revenge. I can't get over the fact that I can't check cars from behind :(

car checking is one of the worst things to happen to Burnout

I love it, yo. Makes things easier, but I can't help feeling so satisifed when I launch two cars and take out a rival. Still, I'm conditioned on it and can't get re-adjusted everytime I go back to Legends.

I honestly agree about checking (although I haven't played Legends). When I first heard about it, I thought what a stupid idea, where's the challenge? But after actually playing, they implemented it perfectly. The Traffic Checking events were a little lackluster, but a couple at the end were decently challenging. Traffic takedowns were some of the most satisfying, because they often happened unexpectedly, you're just trying to clear a path, not realizing a rival is right on your tail, then *BAM* you've got a takedown.

After playing the demo, I thought Burnout Revenge was going to be the most disappointing game I'd buy this fall, so far it has turned out to be the most fun. Even though I don't have a PSP, Legends almost makes me want to get one. If/when I do, I'll definitely look for it.
