Well, lots. Usability on ipod is top of the class IMO (and its a really stupidly simple menu that everyone could/should have copied by now)

But sound quality could be better. No gapless playback, no FM tuner. Only works with iTunes, can't play WM-DRM files so for legal downloads you have a choice of only one store - then you can only play those on ipods, so you have an ipod only future ahead of you.

Don't get me wrong. I have an ipod photo 30GB and like it a lot. Mostly the home/car aspect. But there are other options depending on what you want from it.

If you can wait, wait. Supposedly some announcements in the next few weeks, but who knows? I personally doubt a big jump - maybe photo/colour across the range, build in the camera connector, FM tuner? Video requires a leap in horsepower which I think goes against Apple's current battery life push.

Apple has announced a media event for July 7th, so I'd wait to see what comes out of that.

iTunes 4.9 with Podcasting is a definite, but there's bound to be more than that. Rumours the Motorola iPhone will finally be launched, and the 5th Gen. iPods announced as well. The fallout from the Intel deal is that Apple's laptops and desktops are probably gonna see quite a drop in sales this year as people wait till next year, so it's likely Apple will push the music side of things quite hard in the meantime to compensate.

More interesting than video playback for me would be Wifi iPods. If they can solve the power problems, iPod + iTunes + Airport Express would be a killer combo. It's bound to happen eventually, be nice to get it sooner rather than later :)

I bought an I-Pod and have had nothing but grief with the fucker. I honestly wish I got an I-River. It glicthes, the hard drive is easily damaged and putting MP3s in it through I-Tunes is very limiting.

Fuck I-Pod.

Iriver 20 gig version is coming out next month

H10-20GB-plat-angle.jpg

The Iriver H10 - 20GB does NOT support OGG

Only: MP3, WMA, AU, TXT & JPEG, check the manual. (and the red one is sexier :))

Have you ever considered maybe returning it as you might have gotten a defective one? You know, electronics aren't perfect!

I've had 4 different iPods, two main iPods, a mini and a shuffle. Only problem I had was with the headphone jack on my mini, static would cut in and out if I moved the headphones a little bit. You know what I did? Got a new one with the free one year warranty!

I ended up getting myself a Zen Micro a few weeks ago. I love the thing to death but it was that or Ipod mini damn Gift Cards. I would have gotten one of the Irivers, but even that doesnt support what i like now.

OGG is great and all, the people that are keeping us to Mp3's really is crap like Itunes, and the pirate groups. They're learning though slowly that other codecs are even better. I for one am in love with Mpeg4 audio.

Anyways there are some alpha firmware groups out for Zen Micro. Gonna try one in a few weeks when i wont be needing my player for a bit. Cause if it screws up i'm sending it back just in time.

I know some stuff is up at apple things are done, and in the waiting zone. Some and R&D stuff is gonna be done around September for what i'm thinking might be a revision of the shuffle. Dont count on it but they could be done with it already.

I'm hoping to find out more about the apple stuff come 4th of July BBQ party

I picked up a Creative muvo yesterday to play with, but thats really pretty shit. Doesn't like anything more than one folder deep, no sorting/view by artist etc. Going back.

Is there anything that works wiith WMP to sync both ways - i.e. ratings/playcounts like ipod/iTunes?

If you're considering an iPod wait a few weeks. Apple is holding a media event July 7th and there are rumors new iPods could show up.

Also, iTunes songs are encoded in 128kbps AAC. It'd be nice if they had an option to download them in Apple Lossless at least.

I'm sure I'm asking for this thread to get ugly, but why do you prefer iRivers to iPods? I don't like the iRiver aesthetics so much, but maybe there's some technical features I should know about?

I'm not rewilling to rerip my entire collection; would MP3 sound better on an iRiver than an iPod for some reason?

it's so hot that one of my friends bought one after just TOUCHING mine, and my friend with the PMP-140 wants a H10 for when he wants to "travel light"

yeah, pretty much anything has better sound quality than ipods due to better decoding/circuitry...
plus the irivers have voice recording, fm stereo and fm recording...
and some have support for other audio formats...

Jesus. What kind of problems are people running into when trying to upload MP3s to the iPods?
I have no problems whatsoever.

Rio Carbon Pearl. Got it a few weeks back, the damn thing is perfect. Tiny, sexy, sleek, drag and drop, 5GB, weighs almost nothing. Can't beat the price too.

The whole iPod sound quality thing is way overblown. You'd think it sounded like magnetic tape or something! I know people who on the one hand boast about the superior internals of their mp3 player, but then listen to it with the shittiest stock earbuds. The choice of earbuds/headphones has far more impact on sound-quality than the decoder, if they were genuinely concerned with getting the best sound quality you think they would have changed the earbuds ;)

The whole thing will probably become a non-issue soon though, in the same way as the whole battery thing did. The iPod Shuffles have updated internals, so that will most likely crossover into the 5th Gen.

About a month or so after I purchased a 4G, I tried uploading some songs, then suddenly it glitched out and everything deleted. So basically each time I tried inserting tracks, some weird clicking noises would come out of the hard drive and it would get wiped.

Thankfully, Apple's warranty came in. From the initial phone call to their eventual mailing of a brand new unit, it took 4 days. Pretty smooth, I have to admit. I'm probably going to get one of the 5G's on July 7th and sell my old one.

Do the iRivers use standard laptop drives?

That's one thing I've always liked about my Nomad Zen... if the drive breaks, I can swap it out. Plus if I want to get a bigger drive, I don't have to buy an entirely new player.

Edit: Note that this is about the ONLY thing I like about my Nomad Zen... :(
