Buying advice: Metroid Prime or Metroid Prime Echoes?

RE4 rekindled my love for my little purple GameCube and now I want more games for my machine. The trouble is that I'm not particularly fond of RPG's or "Mario"-games.

I've read what you gaffers (TTLG-joke) think of Metroid Prime and I've decided to buy either Metroid Prime or Metroid Prime Echoes. But I can't decide if I should go for Prime or Echoes. In screens I think Echoes look slightly better and I like that it's a bit darker themed. But will I miss out if I skip Prime? Many reviewers complain that the novelty has worn off in Echoes but if I start there that won't be a problem I presume?

Any suggestions?

Oh, btw, I've played Celda, RE 0 and RE Remake previously.

Well, I think they're so alike that you couldn't go wrong either way. They're both phenomenal titles.

I'd say go with your instinct, just because of your desires. Some cool moments with Dark Samus.

That said, also pick up PIKMIN 2 if you're really trying to rekindle love of Gamecube.

I'd go with Metroid Prime, just because it's cheaper. They're both quality games, yes, but there's no enough of a gameplay/quality difference between the two to recommend one over the other.

Go for what's cheaper now, as that's still a really good game. If you want more, then go ahead and pick up Echoes.

You know, this is a good point. It is cheaper.

BuddyC just persuaded me. I agree, go with Metroid Prime 1.

Go with Prime 1. Prime 2 tries too hard to be an action packed shooter and it just falls flat in that area. The enemies are also really generic and large parts of the game (ie the dark world) are boring mono color repeats. Prime 1 just has cooler areas, more memorable moments and an overall better presentation.

Prime all the way. My pick for game of the generation personally. I guess the initial wow factor after 8 years of no metroid also made it a really awesome experience. Echoes kinda let me down with the whole dark light thing, sad to say. Bosses kicked ass, but the game just lost the flow that Prime had IMO.

Go with Prime. It's cheaper and easier to get into then Echoes. If you played echoes it's hard to go back to Prime. And if you like Prime you can get echoes.

Echoes is deeper and harder. I don't think anyone can get into that game before loving/liking/or even playing the first one ..

so go with PRIME .. + its cheaper :)

get number 1 first. then play it, love it and buy echoes. I just started playing echoes, It's very similar to prime. and very awesome, just like prime. You won't be disappointed.

Go with Prime 1. Prime 2 is no slouch, but the light/dark world backtracking annoyed the hell out of me as it seemed cool at first, but ultimately tedious.

Go with the first game first. It's cheaper and is an amazing game. It may lack multiplayer, but that's really not that important.

Prime. I just cannot get into Echoes. I'm told the game gets better later on, but honestly, after a few hours gameplay, I just can't will myself to go back to it. I'll get to it eventually I suppose, but it's hardly a good sign for the game.

Also, the environments I've seen so far have been rather boring, certainly in comparison to the original Prime. It's almost like they've tried to make it realistic rather than putting two completely different areas next to each other. Might make the flow of the world seem better, but not necessarily better for a game. Though I have heard this gets better later on too.

Anyway, Prime.

I felt this way with the collectathon at the end, just cant bring myself to beat it.

me too :\
it starts off slow, picks up really well, and it was actually at a point where i preferred it to the original. but now i'm at the key collection bit and despite having all the locations of them, i really can't be assed finding them.. so i've kind of left it sitting there.

the original prime blew me away, i'd never really played a metroid game before and i still find the graphics, locations and music (and gameplay) amazing. the second has had its moments - but is missing that certain something (and i think a lot of it has to do with the the more ambient music... the first had hummable tunes :P )

atleast the collectaton for prime could be done through out the game, but for echoes u had to wait till the end, to collect them

Prime is the better game out of the two.

Diverse environments, great polish, awesome graphics, and it's cheaper.

Echoes is better and worse in some respects:
+Multiplayer
+Graphics (somewhat)
-Polish (see multiplayer)
-Not as engaging
-Has a lot of the 'same' feel

Honestly, the best advice is buy Prime and beat it - then play Echoes.

They are both stellar games.

[FYI - Pikmin 2 is one of the best games on the system. You won't find anything like it on any other system and the multiplayer is great!]

i think you can do it earlier, but only if you know thats what you have to do! you get all the clues as you go along - but its not til near the end that youre told you have to go and find them. or as is my understanding..

Anyway, Prime.

The enviroments in echoes seem less alive and natural, but on the other hand the enemies are more lively. The world in Prime felt old and overgrown like a giant secluded alien garden, but Echoes certainly had a different feeling setting than that. Maybe the dark world made every bit of land feel more dead.

Anyways, getting to the end made the game worth it.

I'd say get Prime.

Echoes is awesome and awesome is echoes but Prime has cooler environments/areas imo. Also, the dark/light worlds were pretty annoying in echoes. Both games have pretty boring backtracking at the end but if you think of it as exploration and use it to expand your arsenal of missile expansions and other upgrades it's actually fun!

Oh and the last boss in Prime is awesome. The final Echoes boss is easy compared to the Prime one. :D

On the off-chance that you need MORE pushing towards Prime...

Metroid Prime was the first game I played that made me really, really glad I bought a Gamecube.

That said, I cannot finish Echoes. Boring enemies, boring environments, backtracking...blah. It's not an awful game but it certainly pales in comparison next to Prime. I couldn't put the first one down until I beat it, whereas it will have to be a dry month in gaming for me to go back and complete Echoes.

Well, let's hope Retro are listening.

Not that it matters, given the number of people who complained about collecting in the first one and they still brought it back. Yet they put in multiplayer, which no one asked for.

Echoes= meh

I don't see how anyone could like Prime and think Echoes was that bad. ¬ ¬

OK I do but I wanted to try that smiley! :D

There felt like there was less backtracking/collecting at the end of Echoes than Prime. So I think that's improved. Echoes isn't just meh. I think the enemies/bosses are better than Prime, while the first game had more interesting areas. Though Sanctuary is certainly unique amongst Metroid games.

Prime captures the curious alien world aspect, while Echoes captures more of the darkness and creepiness I got from Super Metroid. Hopefully Retro can combine both in the next game.

So just get Prime, if you like it, get Echoes.

Echoes has the better puzzles, which I enjoyed about it more than Prime (I think Echoes reminded me of Zelda). Anyway, I'd go with Echoes overall. Prime doesn't have the annoying dark/light world, but it's also pretty boring.

But go with Prime first. Get a feel for it. Then go check out Echoes if you're up for a challenge.

I don't get some people. If the 1st game was so awesome to you, then what the hell is wrong with having another game with the same exact feel but being a different adventure?!?
They are both amazing games and have such depth and atmosphere.
I mean, people pay full price for endless rehashes of the same tiring sports game, but when an amazing game like Prime comes around for another outing, what the heck do you expect? You want them to change the game and revolutionise it again? They just did that the previous time! bloody hell.
Yet people have no problem taking in 3 installments of GTA where the gameplay mechanic is exatly the same....not saying anything bad about GTA; i love the serie. But somehow you seem to want something new and spectacular everytime Nintendo is involved and that just ain't right! The formula works, so keep it that way.

Get Prime 1st, be Samus; live the adventure, then get the 2nd for another wonderful outing. :)

Stupid me for going away from the computer after asking a question. :)

Thanks everybody, I'll get Prime and see if I like it. Everyone seems to agree that Prime's better so I'll start there. I'm really hyped for it now! Late to the party indeed...

F-zero rocks too :)

Got it on Prime.

F-zero - looks good for a futuristic racer. Too bad I don't like futuristic racers. Or racers at all for that matter. :lol

There is no "novelty" to Prime/Echoes. You either love it or don't.

I honestly couldn't tell you which I consider the better game but you must start with the first Prime. Echoes has harder puzzles, harder gameplay, and complex navigation. The bosses and morphball puzzles in Echoes are especially good and hence became more rewarding to finish for me. Prime was the first so that'll always be considered better. Plus it rubs you with the nostalgia stick quite a bit. Echoes did quite a few new things which many GAFers don't like.

Both games get a 10 from me.

People always seem to want more of the same until you give it to them. Actually, Echoes has some big differences, but still ends up feeling like more of the same. It would be fantastic if it weren't for the collecting at the end, which dragged it down a lot. That part is much harder than it was in MP, where it didn't bother me but certainly wasn't necessary. But I actually found the multiplayer in Echoes very fun, so if that entices you, you might want to get Echoes instead.

Madden, GTA, and Prime should be held on the same standard for sequels. Some sort of higher standard or (not so) secret hatred for Nintendo I suppose. Typical GAF.

IAWTP EternalDarko! From a Junior Member no less!

I beat Metroid Prime for my first time last year. Absolutely amazing, and definitely my fave for 2004. Haven't gotten around to playing MP2.

Metroid Prime was amazing. Prime 2 I can't get into. Too much traveling back and forth and get lost too much, I quit round 25% into it hadn't come back.

If you have to choose a Metroid game, the first one would be better choice because of price. Personally I enjoyed Echoes more, but I can't justify getting that game now when Prime is Player's Choice and Echoes is not.

Echoes is overall better. Both are great.

Prime was a traditional Metroid game (but in 1st-person 3D) ;) It was packed with fimilar enemies and environments. It had a simple story, but it still enough to lead you through the game (the backstory in the scans is very interesting).

Echoes didn't use the Metroid license much; it went its own way, but then didn't. The game is very similar to the first, enemies return, though they don't always look the same; returning power-ups are very well implement, though new ones... not so much; the weapons act a lot like Primes weapons, but then have a slightly new twist. They tried to create the light world as one continuos world, so there wasn't the stounch differences between terrians (going from forrest to swamp, instead of ice to lava). Echoes tries to have a more detailed story, but it doesn't really come together.

Puzzles:
Echoes > Prime

Bosses:
Echoes < Prime

Bosses + mini-bosses:
Echoes > Prime

Nostalgia:
Echoes < Prime

Environments:
Echoes < Prime (depends on your tastes)

Environmental detail:
Echoes > Prime

Graphics, sound:
Echoes > Prime

Framerate:
Echoes < Prime

I wish you fought a Dark Ridely in Echoes.

I agree, go with Prime. The guns are cooler and the design is just better. It feels like a real Metroid game, not Metroid: sidequest.
