Buzzfeed: Inside iPhone 7: Why Apple Killed The Headphone Jack

You really don't get what Proprietary means, do you?

No, "owned by a primary actor who controls the licensing" is literally the definition of "proprietary." I think you're confusing that with open vs. closed standard.

Any technology controlled by a patent owner (or coalition of patent holders) is proprietary? BluRay and DVD are also technically proprietary? MP3 and H264 are proprietary? Force feedback in a controller is proprietary? I would not consider them as such.

It always struck me strange people just threw around the "proprietary" term like it was a pejorative, when so many licensed technologies end up being as widespread as open standards.

I am pretty happy they have got rid of it. I have been wanting to go wirless for years, but always been half assed. I I would have been all over the device day one if the airpods came with the phone, but now I might just way for the iPhone 2017.

Seems a lot of people are annoyed they can't charge and listen to their music. I don't think I have ever found myself in that situation, so couldn't really care.

There are 2 speakers, one in the bottom and another one on top.

So they made the earpiece speaker loud enough to hear and the missing headphone jack hole is filled with what exactly?

Havent seen any internal shits of the layout so going from the 6/6s I don't know what they could have put there to now justify the missing port. Unless taptic is on top and the board goes closer to the top allowing for a bigger battery but still doesn't negate the fact that the lightning port is almost as "tall" as the 3.5 internally.

What that quote is also talking about is things like Square

So sure you can attach it via the adapter but I bet Apple has more control over the data being sent over the lightening port and could identify when it's being used for non-audio uses
They could already do that if they wanted. All audio is routed through apple APIs.

This line of talking points seems like grasping.

I can see iTunes getting nuked as it exists today. It barely has a reason to exist anymore.

All that there should be is a cloud of your content and the old way of thinking where the PC or Mac as a middleman isn't really necessary anymore for the vast majority of uses. They are not sync machines though.

A PC or a MAC as end media storage is fine, just like a iPhone or iPad is end media storage.

“We are removing the audio jack because we have developed a better way to deliver audio.

This is straight up bullshit.

Yeah saw your update and that does seem like reaching

Honestly I just believe Apple is doing it to make more money off of airpods

Because they're assholes.

If you're going to remove something, make sure there is something better to replace it. Well guess what... there isn't anything better than the regular headphone jack right now.

Floppies were removed because the storage they provided wasn't enough. USB was removed because Apple are assholes. It's still the standard today. DVD drives were removed because, for a segment of the market, the drives weren't being used. I still use mine to this day.

I'm pretty sure it is to sell that $160 Bluetooth headset of theirs.

I'm sorry and normally I find this a dickish thing to do but

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/proprietary
1
: one that possesses, owns, or holds exclusive right to something; specifically : proprietor 1
2
: something that is used, produced, or marketed under exclusive legal right of the inventor or maker; specifically : a drug (as a patent medicine) that is protected by secrecy, patent, or copyright against free competition as to name, product, composition, or process of manufacture

So the answer to your examples, except for force feedback*, is yes. It has nothing to do with spread of use.

* Certain companies might have patents on specific implementations but the general concept is not.

Is that statement necessarily wrong?
It's intellectually dishonest spin. All ports are filled with air, until you plug something into them so they can perform their function.

It's like saying "The human lungs contain empty space." Like, duuuuh.

Anyone can make a Bluetooth set of cans though. Samsung already has a design similar to Apple's own that are not tethered with a cord.

Sure, Apple removing the 3.5" port raises all boats in the wireless headphone game but I still believe Apple is doing it because when all these iphone 7 buyers look for a set of wireless earbuds to use with their now limited phones, they're going to at least glance at Apple's offering that is purpose built to be used for iphone 7 by the makers of iphone 7

There are a massive amount of bluetooth headsets available. I had a pair of bluetooth headphones like 4 years ago.

I honestly believe they wanted more space in the phone. They should have just left it at that. Seems reasonable to me. Still hard to swallow.

Holy Christ AirPods are the stupidest fucking thing I've ever seen. I'm genuinely flabbergasted by this shit. No way they are staying in your ear.

So we have two ports filled with air. They deemed that some of that air should be allocated to something else.

Where is that air being used? To say the word courage? Doubt it's being used in the reworking of internal components to bring about any significant jump in performance to warrant it in the first place.

Anyone have those internal shots that were mentioned earlier in the thread? Can't find anything besides leaked board shots which do nothing to show the internal layout of things compared to the 6s.

And none of them as good or as cheap as wired headphones. Which is the real issue. With any hope, this kickstarts the market and people figure out how to make wireless good and cheap, but, if you have to wait for the distant release of a third party product to make the proposition worthwhile, there is something pretty fucked up in the process, and no amount of adapters can change that.

I think removing the port is nuts.

They do come with an adapter and you can still use your own analog cans.

Here's the thing. I love bluetooth headphones. Use them for hours a day a lot of days. Great for walks, exercise, cooking, cleaning, what have you. I think they've come a long way over the years.

Want to know a big weakness they have? They keep the bluetooth radio in your device on 24/7 and are a massive battery drain. If I go a full day just listening to something I end up pulling about 20% of the battery just by doing that. Compared to almost nothing to keep a pair of wired headphones in!

He makes some good points. I really don't get the "outrage" over its removal. The only good argument I've heard is that you can't charge and listen at the same time but I'm sure there will be adapters for that. When you are buying a $900 phone I don't get the opposition of buying a $20 adapter.
Same reason Lexus owners don't want to be charged extra for seat belts.

the only thing full of air is apple if they think anyone reasonable will buy those airpods
people totally will buy them tho

whats the courage meme about??

Solid article.

It ends up being the price of engineering smaller devices with increasingly demanding battery requirements, connectivity and functionality.

I'll be getting the phone and I'll still lament the loss of the 3.5mm audio port.

This would be an easier pill to swallow if the lightning port was a usb c port. A lightning specific headset can't be used on anything right now. Not even my macbook pro.
Or, you know, they could stop trying to make the iPhone the depth of a credit card?

Probably could help to keep the headphone jack and their little features they just HAD to get rid of the headphone jack for.

Eimer is the German word for bucket. You pronounce "Ei" like the English "i".

I've never had earbuds that stay in my ear for any extended periods of time, especially when doing exercise and stuff. Those are just gonna fall out and get lost.

I don't think they're intended for exercise or anything. Plenty of bluetooth options for that, and beats is making wrap arounds that will use the same wireless as the airpods that will be much better for that..

They didn't even. They could have switched to oled displays freeing up a shit load of space that their current force touch LCD panels are taking up. The jack wasn't even an excuse from that regard. All about getting paid for those lightning connectors and adapters.

The area that used to be reserved for the headphone jack is NOT empty now. They have rearranged the circuitry or mechanicals to utilize that area. Perhaps driven by the larger camera size or addition of some other component. The useable space in an iPhone is clearly finite, so every little bit of space is valuable. And relatively speaking, the headphone jack does take up a significant amount, especially when it's function can potentially be addressed through another port. They didn't get rid of it for nothing.

Of course. You walk into an Apple Store for a phone chances are you are going to walk out with official apple headphones as well and if not those, Beats. Like I said in the competing thread I don't think Apple wants any cables attached to this phone. Docking a phone to an audio system is barely necessary anymore with Bluetooth coming stock in so much audio gear as it is.

I recently bought a pair of Astro headphones with mic for use with my Xbox One and really that audio is wireless even though it is wired into the controller as it is.

I get the upset however. I have a nice pair of both Sony and Astro cans that I love.

Apple does not let any company make decides with lightning PORTS. There won't be phones or laptops or hardly anything with these ports (maybe cars and docks, that's about it, otherwise it's all about licensing things that create an ecosystem around I devices.)

Anyone with the money to license BluRay or DVD can make a player and throw the logo on their device and use the tech. Apple enacts control over their proprietary tech, other technically "proprietary" techs aren't labeled as such because they aren't nearly as controlled.

Then you have shit like 3.5mm that is a completely open standard. Bluetooth is middle ground, but it's based on several open standards. So it's generally called a standard.
