C&C: Generals 2 (EA/Bioware Victory; Frostbite 2) [Details, PC Exclusive, Screens]

Pretty sure the 3rd side will be Russia or possibly China. 'Merica will be the main selling point for the expansion pack.

There needs to be a overpowering, brute force faction to counter the technology faction (EU) and the sneaky faction (GLA). EU was probably picked over the USA because PC gaming is big in Germany and many other continental European countries, which is the heart of eSports and where PC gaming is number 1.

I am predicting EU is a subfaction of "Western" factions that also includes USA. GLA can be a subfaction of Russia since they shared a lot of tech with Soviet Union in Generals 1. China has their own R&D path for weapons in the real world, but I wouldn't know any nation that would work as a subfaction of China expect for NK.

I guess the subfactions can be further differentiated by their unique Generals.

Bah, EU and Gla might just be campaign only factions like the PLR were in Battlefield 3.

So when are they going to follow up on Emperor: Battle for Dune? That's pretty muc all that's been left without a sequel.

So I guess the Generals will have a bit more story to them now and that means romantic interests.

Let's see how many RTS-IPs Bioware can ruin.

Half the Generals will be female, and you need to gain their "loyalty" in order to access their best ability.

I've done nothing with my life except eat and fap
Screens look good, I hope they will go all the way with destruction and make it playable in browsers.

Oh yes I approve of this.

Anyway this doesn't sound like a traditional Bioware game in any way. The story setup is beyond horrible.

AoW was quite fun and had some neat ideas. I loved the PoW stuff and rescuing wounded soldiers.

the capture prisoner mechanic was in Generals at some point actually but it was cut before release, files still remained in the game.

Each faction had a prison building. Intelligence Center for USA was actually in original Generals but cut in Zero Hour and it's ability (revealing map) was moved to Strategy Center, it required capturing prisoners to recharge in the cut code that are still in the ini files.

Prison building for all factions could build POW Trucks, which could carry prisoners back to Prison building like a resource harvester.

Flashbangs for USA's Rangers were not supposed to kill enemies (since when flashbang is lethal? :p) it was for capturing prisoners. GLA Rebels had tranq. darts and Chinese Red Guards had stun bullets doing the same thing for each faciton.

All the files, sound effects and 3D models were remained in the game code and there was a mod that brought these back but it didn't work so well.

I don't know whether the synopsis is supposed to be parody or not.

Then again, the best parody is when they don't tell you it's parody.

Did you see Red Alert 3? Comparing the women in RA3 vs RA2 was embarrassing.

I felt kind of insulted that they thought the thing I'd appreciate most is if they got all the female actors to open their shirts.

I'm... warming to the game. CnC has fallen so low that it can only go up (or it'll go negative and end up in game's Hell). And since it is coming 2013, i have a bit over a year to get a gaming PC.
Not happy about the price though, i called it on top of page 2. Good thing they seemed to miss my reasoning why it could be $70...

A-10 Napalm Strike needs to come back though. Anyone remember the Enemy AI using it in original C&C? Once it dropped one bomb at time on an unit, following it.

Wow, didn't know that. Did anyone ever mod it back it?

So what do we know about the game?

*From a dev with no connections to the previous games?
*From a dev that they want to call Bioware, but doesn´t seem to be Bioware in more than the name?
*Marketed with the "modern war setting".
*Already marketed with DLC for just about every component in the game.
*Release date - 2 years from now.

Forgive me if I don´t fall for the hype. :)

Might be a fun game, but I can´t help to feel a bit sad that a game still can get so much attention just because it has the C&C name.

Exactly.

AoW started where Generals left off.

I thought the graphics were also pretty awesome for its time.

And I especially loved the way airforces were handled in that game.

Yes.

Never tried it myself because everyone who did said it was janky.

The "modern war setting" was directly taken from Generals 1, which was a great game. The development team also apparently has some pretty high profile talent attached to it (creator of Heroes of Might & Magic series, if memory serves me), and the brief footage we've seen looks pretty decent so far.

Oh god.

Never played generals seriously online (just AI), but playing SC2 it's funny thinking back to the money collecting structures. Kind of different from the need to always expand in SC2.

And was I the only one who made a billion particle cannons, just to have fun with the AI? :p

Expanding to other supply zones was absolutely necessary for competitive play - the money collecting structures/units, while viable in the long term for an extended game session, were not viable in a typical online game which ended in 10 minutes or less. They came late in the tech tree and took a while to pay for themselves - with no concept of support limits the only limiting factors for your units was factory bandwidth and cashflow, so MORE TANKS was usually a much better investment.

And of course you're not the only one who just mucked about with the A.I. / single player componenets. I did that for the few few years I owned the game - never touched online until about 04 / 05.

Frostbite 2 in an RTS? Sweeeeet.

Ray Muzyka: One of the things we’re most excited about in adding strategy to our portfolio is finding a way to incorporate BioWare’s vision of genuine emotional engagement and quality, including the attention to story and narrative, in a way that is fresh, new, and additive to the genre.
So I will be able to bang my Commanding Officers? Awesome!

Good to see that EA finally got their all-for-one game engine. Took them few years, but it seems that Frostbite 2 is now the way to go.

Jon Van Caneghem: Generals 2 is a return to the roots of core C&C gameplay, balancing fast-paced action with strategic decision-making. The best C&C games are known for being accessible but also challenging to master and we are embracing that at the heart of the game design. Most importantly, we’ve heard the fans and we’re bringing back the elements of C&C they love--bases, resources, and giant armies.
That's all I really want. That and a good skirmish mode.

Jon Van Caneghem: We looked at each of the different universes in the franchise and thought a return to Generals was long overdue. The original game is actually the best-selling game in the series
Is it really?

I hope that now with Frostbite 2 engine they go for more COH-like physics and simulation based feel on combat. I really dig the 'realism' and tension that bullet simulation and the fact that units miss their shots from time to time creates.

wait wait wait

WAIT

... PC exclusive ?

Now we're talking EA.
It's an RTS. I think EA got the message from how poorly the console ports of C&C3 and RA3 sold.

C&C4 was PC exclusive. Starcraft 2 was PC exclusive.

Darkspore was PC exclusive. Diablo III is PC exclusive.

I suppose nothing is stopping them from trying out at least a Wii U port eventually, but it is indeed PC exclusive for now.

Just wait until they use punkbuster to stop cheating in multiplayer...lols
No one uses Punkbuster for RTS games. It doesn't address the problem that RTS games have (map/fog of war hacking) and does address problems that RTS games don't have (namely client-side value changes, which will simply cause desync in peer to peer localhosted games like RTS games).

A EU faction would be very interesting to play, everytime you build a unit it would develop a immediate dislike for the rest of the team and look for a way to bugger everything up.

I just hope playing custom-made maps is as easy as in Generals 1. No need for downloading it externally and putting it in a specific folder, just an in-game transfer..

Six minute no-rush games that took hours to complete, how much I loved you those days!

They'll be handing out money to the worst player, while being sure they won't get it back..

2013? Well I can forget this one existing for a while. Nice to see C+C back how it should, but seemed a waste to announce this now. And it's unlikely to work in some regard on my laptop.
