Also living in California all my life outside of the bay.

I don't know what good public transportation is, but everything down in socal is so spread out, I don't see how it'd work with my commute and not fuck me over royally.

You know we've never paid off the Interstate Highway System, right? Eisenhower made them, and we're not even close.

Paved roads for cars are fucking expensive. I'm tired of them.

The interstate system was an excellent idea (thought it was designed for a 50yr life or so.) Not sure if we were maintaining adequately enough as we were supposed to but it is what is now.

Factor in the increased amounts of semi-trucks and heavy rigs over the last few decades and the reduction of rail use has added significant wear and tear on the roads and thruways.

In school I remember the transportation professor saying something along the lines of 1 fully loaded 18 wheeler truck does the same damage to the road as 9,000 cars (approx)

That's the issue I see here as well. I work a city over from where I live yet I couldn't see how I could use the current public transportation to travel between the two (Also I have to drive to different client's offices so that would still be a problem unless we got a company car). But this is me not having seen a public transport system done well so I'm probably talking from ignorance here.

California has the 6th largest GDP in the world.

Crazy talk, all those extra wheels distibute the weight.

I guess he could have been talking about miles per day/year or something.

Those diesel trucks absolutely wreck the roads. All you need to do is drive down the 710 freeway in Long Beach to see just how fucked up the roads are where trucks tread through. Cali has the biggest port in north america in LA and another significant one in SF. All those asian import cars have to get to you from somewhere and that is from LA.
