Finished the campaign just there, on hardened. Not sure my thoughts are too different to everyone else's.
In terms of actual gameplay it was good. Probably took me around 9 hours alone. It would be interesting to try this game in 4 person co-op because it doesn't really seem spacey enough for it, but certainly for single player it was a bit more open than previous call of duty games, and it does a nice job of supporting different play styles. I liked and used alot of the abilities, mostly the control core aiblities, but I subbed in the chaos stuff a good few times too.
To me, the big sticking point with gameplay is still AI. Difficulty really just ramps up how many bullets they eat and how few you can, 90% of enemies still plant their feet and just fire away at you. The open areas make it easy to flank, and most times I got stuck, it was simply because of the numbers, rather than anything in particular the enemy was doing. I imagine in four player co-op you can just roll right through things.
As far as the story goes, it was fiiiine. I wouldn't say it was trash like some people are saying, but definitely a big disappointment for me in terms of what I hoped for/expected from the black ops series. I guess it fit the tone of wtf is going on of the first game, but in very different ways, and in the end, the explanations are not super interesting. I also finished it and went "huh, kind of like the end of
then" which isn't really something I want to take away form any game haha. Fuck your stupid partner as well. His reactions, dialogue, everything really. He starts fine for some reaosn at the beginning but after the prologue/missions 1-2, ugh.
Also, the tone and style of the game kind of makes the game move away form the big crazy hoorah set pieces I like from COD. This game really made me miss Modern Warfare. I appreciate Treyarch are trying to move up with their level of storytelling but I think they just leaned into their weaknesses this time, and I LIKE call of duty's banality. I want explosions, vehicles disintegrating while you're in them, moustache twirling villians and so on from this series. Also, some EXTREMELY gory ha, feels very left field when that stuff happens.
So overally campaign-wise, I feel like the actual gameplay is an overall win (relative to the call of duty games), but the actual setting and story leaves so much to be desired
Also performance and visuals is a bit offt. Nothing game breaking, but I'm not too sensitive to this stuff and it was jarring a few times. Going into and out of cutscenes especially, but at times during gameplay too.
