Hey what's up all... I plan on upgrading my current camcorder in a year or so... it currently uses a hard drive, but it is not HD. It does have a great video sensor, so I do not have to upgrade for a while.

So, what will be the format down the road... maybe by late fall or winter.

Is it going to be memory sticks in favor of hard drive?

I have this Sony camcorder and it is really nice. 6.1MP photo shots is pretty good too.

3.0 Megapixel (Gross) ClearVid™ CMOS Sensor
1/2.9" ClearVid™ CMOS Sensor with 3040K (effective) pixels provides stunning detail and clarity with exceptional video (up to 530 lines of horizontal resolution) and still image performance. The Megapixel technology enhances your digital videos and digital still (3040K) photography performance.

10X Optical/20X Digital Zoom
The optical zoom helps to bring the action close up from far away. In addition, the Digital Zoom interpolation means that extreme digital zooming is clearer, with less distortion than previous types of digital zooms.

Professional Quality Carl Zeiss® Vario-Sonnar® T Lens
Carl Zeiss lenses have an advanced optical multi-layer coating for increased contrast. This results in vivid image brilliance, true-to-life color saturation and perfect renditions of subtle tones. The additional T coating on the lens further reduces unwanted glare and flare.

Dolby® Digital 5.1ch Recording
The DCR-SR300 will record in Dolby Digital 5.1ch surround sound with a built-in microphone. By recording in 5.1 channel surround sound you can now experience your home movies with active sounds coming from all directions. Enjoy your personal home movies the way you experienced them while recording.

2.7" Wide (16:9) Hybrid Touch Panel Clear Photo™ Plus LCD6 (211K Pixels)
The 2.7" Wide (16:9) LCD screen provides excellent viewing clarity with improved resolution. The high resolution 211K pixel LCD screen rotates up to 270 degrees for multiple viewing angles providing sharp, detailed images for monitoring or playback, and the widescreen format makes shooting in 16:9 mode and composing shots even easier.

prolly memory sticks or HDDs. They already are if you want to go AVCHD. Or DV is still around for HD on tape, which arguably is easier to edit as the AVCHD standard isn't all that 'standard' yet and is still pretty heavy duty to edit.

But it is moving in that direction. Pretty sure my next camcorder will be either HDD or memory stick - doesn't really matter which as the format is the same - its just down to size Vs storage.

I just bought a new HD video camera a month or so back and it uses flash memory. Comes with 8 GB installed and you can add SDHC cards for more. Works great, is VERY small, and takes awesome video.

That said, the purists will tell you that tape is still where it's at. You get great quality, tapes are cheap, and easy to edit from.

When I went looking for something, I had some specific qualifications in mind. I wanted something for travel, so I was looking for small and light, and either flash/memory card based, or tape based. I specifically did not want one with an HDD. High Def was a must as well.

No, I will never go back to tape... it was a pain to transfer an hour tape, it took up an hour on the PC.

With the hard drive camcorder... an hour of video is a minute or less to transfer.

I saw this AVCHD on sale at Best Buy... but my censor is pretty much the same, just not HD. It is almost exactly like my camcorder except HD...

What is meant by editing is easier with tape? Doesn't it all just go on your computer and get pulled into whatever program you are using to edit?

Don't disagree with you. Takes no time to copy the file over to my computer either, but importing into my editor still takes a bit of time once the file is actually on the computer. Still, it's not as slow as tape, which is real time.

A lot of editors don't support the formats for the HDD or Flash camcorders just yet. They will in the future of course, but for now it can be a pain, depending on your editor of choice, to get the files in place and working properly. I knew this ahead of time when I bought my cam, so I already was prepared with all the right codecs. As it turned out though, it was easy as can be.
