Can I play Baldurs Gate 2 without playing BG1?

So, I really want to get BG2 as a lot of people here have recommended it. But I'm curious as to if I'll be able to understand the story without playing the original. Is it do-able?

BG2 is IMO way worse than the first. But yes you can play BG2 without playing BG.

wait you arent talking about dark alliance!!! :lol

So I retract what I said about BG being better than BG2 :lol

I would recommend it. BG2 is leaps and bounds better than BG1.

Now, the inverse is true for Fallout. I would recommend Fallout instead of Fallout 2.

What the fuck is wrong with you? Seriously?

Anyway, yes, skip BG1 and just play BG2. BG1 was an innovator for its time, but it's outshined in every way imaginable by BG2.

Yeah, I brought Fallout 1 and 2 and definately found 1 more enjoyable. I just couldn't get anywhere in 2 (kept dieing, running out of money).

Heh, nice to see EviLore sticking to his guns :D

EDIT: Cool Gamestop online still has copies of the Ultimate Collection. There we go!

Whats wrong with him? Whats wrong with me?

I bought BG2 when it came out thinking I was going to have the greatest rpg experience of my life and i ended up quitting and uninstalling after 5 hours of play.

A lot of people have trouble with the intro dungeon. Once you get out into the main game and start exploring the wealth of quests available (in chapter 2 especially) the game kicks into full gear.

Absolutely, I played BG2 first, and it truly is superior to BG1 in every way. BG2 does a good job of explaining what happened in the first game, so you dont really miss out on any critical story stuff either.

Also, as was previously mentioned, some people absolutely hate the first dungeon in BG2. To the point of turning them off to the entire game, but there is a mod floating around BG2 sites that allows you to skip the first dungeon entirely.

I didn't particularly enjoy BG1, and I consider BG2 to be one of the greatest games of all time. That, combined with the fact that you'll get all the info you need regarding the first game from BG2, means you can safely skip BG1.

Try not to look at faqs and such. IIRC the game story branches different ways and you wouldn't want to be influenced or have it ruined.

Actually, I really enjoyed the first game, but the 2nd one is definitely better in every way. If you really want to experience the whole story, you can play through the first game and start the 2nd one with your saved character from the first game. And a number of the main NPCs from the first game are carried over into the 2nd game. But if you have any intention of ever playing the first game, definitely do it before you play the 2nd one, because the 2nd game is so amazing that you just won't want to go back to the 1st game afterwards.

Well, I doubt I could find a copy of the original before I get BG2 soon, so I guess I'll just enjoy #2.

BTW, will there be any problems running the game on a brand new computer? I've heard of older games not working so well on newer computers. And I'm getting a pretty new computer:

P4 3.6Ghz
2GB RAM
256MB Nvidia 7800GTX

You shouldnt have any problems really. My PC isnt as high end as yours, but it's still years ahead of what was around at the time BG2 was first released, and I've yet to encounter any issues with it after having played through it 3 times on my new PC.

You must gather your party before venturing forth.
