Can RE4 be topped?

The production values are insane. It is the way it is, is because they made two full games prior getting to the finished product. RE4 is probably more like RE7 same way Zelda:OOT isnt really Zelda4 but Zelda7. It shows the amount of blood, sweat & guts required to make such a production was vast. What could top RE4 in the near future?

I'd say RE5, but it's not the same team, so I don't have the same hope for it.

Possibly Zelda, depending on what this delay ends up being for.

I have a hard time believing anything is going to top RE4 for a very long time.
How about that PS2 game? What is it called. Oh yeah. RE4: Superior Version.

amirite?

What do you mean? In terms of best overall game? Becuase i think its already been topped in that regard.

Or are you asking can Capcom better the series??

This gen? Technically, I don't know. When I think of a game that got 100% or near 100% reviews *everywhere*, RE4 is the first thing that comes to mind.

I think he's talking about production value and how they redid the game several times until they were satisfied with it

and I think it won't be topped so soon in that

If you think it's already been topped, topped by what?

Plenty.

Ninja Gaiden, Halo, Halo2, MGS3, KOTOR, GTA SA, GTA3

Those are the best games I have played this gen. I've not beat RE4yet, cant be bothered to continue, but RE4 is one of the best games i've played this year and will certainly be remebered when i look back and think of all the great gaming momnets i've had this gen.

RE4 is far and away the best game this gen and one of the best games ever made. Period. And I seriously doubt that even Zelda:TP will top it.

But RE5 or some other game might top it next gen.

RE4, IMO, has already been topped. Ouendan for the DS just provided me for hours of sheer entertainment and fun in a jolly good way. Not to say that RE4 isn't magnificant, however.

I think Twilight Princess has a shot. Looks like we're back to the old EAD again. The EAD that would take years just to get the game down right. (Oot/Pikmin etc etc)

I've played most of those games as well. IMO they don't top RE4.

I was wondering if there by any chance is possible to acquire the sounds to RE4? I'm talking about all these useful spanish phrases used by the zombies during the game.. If anyone knows if they are accessible anywhere on the internet I would really appreciate it!

Planing to use one for incomming SMS-signal on my cellphone..

Ditto. I've finished every one of those games and they were all great (apart from GTA) but, for me, none of them come close to RE4

RE4 is a masterpiece of game design. It's as simple as that, IMO. No other team has put together such a perfectly constructed game, put it into a unique alternate reality, fine-tuned it to perfection and then gone through every single thing to make it better

Is the GC version perfect? No. Will the PS2 version be better? I doubt it but that doesn't matter because the game is probably the best example of gaming this generation

Not that I think they'll necessarily be better games, but haven't Perfect Dark Zero and, um, I dunno, Duke Nukem Forever been in development FOREVER? I'm not sure what you mean by production values, but games like these must cost a TON, and if they've been in production forever they must have gone through a few versions of the game. I know at least PD0 did as it was first started on GC.

But, yeah, if you also mean that these costs and revisions actually end up producing a great game, then the jury's still out on the two examples I mentioned.

MGS3 kicks the shit out of RE4 (and about every game so far) with its presentation too.

Presentation..possibly, but as a game RE4>>> MGS3 (IMO of course :) )

I don't keep going back to MGS3, RE4 is something I always play since it was released. Played through it like 6 times already and constantly play mercenaries. Replayability is through the roof.

nope. you lose.

Well I thought so atleast... Besides its not like Ninja Gaiden IN MY OPINION is MUCH better than RE4 anyway.. But in terms of production quality, I would say Ninja Gaiden is better than RE4. Not only does Ninja Gaiden have graphics that rivale pretty much anything, it also has very smooth framerate that goes down very rarely and also is very polished, you rarely see anything abnormal in the game, be it sounds, voice acting or the graphics. It also has a great online tournament mode thing, different diffculty settings for average players to the masochist, hidden games that you unfortunately have to unlock and so forth.. RE4 does have mercenaries or whatever it is called, wich is a great addition to an allread awesome game.

how can you be so sure since you've never beaten RE4?
Oh, there is no question there.

You can argue about the games themselves all day, but MGS3's presentation is incredible. RE4 can't compare on that front (and doesn't really try to)...

I think im near the end, i've put in 25 hours (i just killed weskers henchman, with the weird arm) :)

I'll go back to it sometime. I think i've seen enough of the game to make an accurate comparison, or at least based on presentation

25h? Youre quite slow and I thought I was slow when I beat it under 20h :)

Dark10x, is there a single game this current gen that comes even close to MGS 3 presentation? I cant even think of one game for the moment.

Ninja Gaiden does indeed kick ass. I was just playing with ya. :)
I'm sure some people do find it better. I just happen to love RE4 more then anything, and of course Leatherface>Shampola =P

I love the Zeldas, Ninja Gaidens, MGSs and Metroids but I don't know if we'll see another Resident Evil 4 for a really long while. I came right off MGS3 and thinking it was going to be a while before any game touched it until I played RE4.

The game is pretty much as close to perfect as I imagined a game being. This is why it sickened me to see people go hog wild over RE5 when we have a good idea that Shinji Mikami and the RE4 team are not behind it. That team is what made RE4 the legend that it will undoubtedly become.

This makes me sad since I didn't know this. Why isn't the original team doing the sequel?! WHY?!! WHYYYYYYY?! =_ _ (

I know, I agree with him, presentation wise, MGS 3 is superior, I just stated that he never even beated the game

RE4 is just so well-paced that it feels like a real "lightning in a bottle" situation that will be very tough to repeat. It's my favorite game this gen, and only a few (e.g. Ninja Gaiden) really come close to competing with it.

Everything comes together in RE4: cutting edge graphics, gameplay that outclasses anything else in the genre, series nostalgia... Even if a game comes along in a few years that manages to do what RE4 does better, it's tough to imagine it having the impact of RE4 since it will probably feel like a rehash or refinement of it.

The one weak part, I suppose, is the story, which is just functional. There's room for improvement there, but it's still tough to imagine a better game any time soon.

RE4 had high production values, but it was horrid if you factor in the awkward gameplay and the constant escorting. It's like Ico, but with a gun.

Sure. RE4 was great, but you could immediately improve it by adding a more interesting story and more better characterisation.

I doubt any single game will signify the same kind of leap in kickassery that RE4 initiated on everything up to that point for quite some time.

I'd frankly be shocked if Twilight Princess pulled it off, and from the internal struggles over the RE team at Capcom, I'm kinda just hoping it turns out as cool as RE4.

I think for the matter of having clear definitions: I don't believe "topped" to mean a game that does everything the game before it did but to have tweaked it in some way to make an improvement. What's more important is to top the game's accomplishments by becoming a more significant release (given all the games released to that point) than game X. In this case, RE4. That means just as big a leap in control, graphics, immersion, and action that RE4 gave us over previous horror titles.

In short, I don't think a game is going to grab me by the balls, and actually continue to fondle me throughout all twenty hours with quite the intensity RE4 did anytime in the near future.

re4 has lovely graphics and enjoyable gunplay. re5 can borrow the latter and has already improved on the former. so yeah, i think it can be topped.

Mikami directing the project? No. RE4 team in place? No.

Care to explain your logic?
Survival Horror of the likes you've never experienced before.
While I've played through (and beaten) RE4, the gameplay and graphics are great, however, RE5 is going to give us what RE gave us. Fear. Mikami is a great director, no doubt about it, however, with the series branching from here, it's going to get very, very good from here on out.

I'd expect RE5 to be in the run for GOTY 2006.

I don't doubt that it's going to be a great game, but it takes more than just a new coat of paint to match the greatness. Everything from level design to item balance to the overall style of the title is in the hands of Mikami and his team.

Handing a series over to a different team and director is a risky operation no matter how you look at it. Better graphics is not going to help the fact that they need to keep the same quality of level design, balance, style, etc.

Don't mind me. I'm all about giving props to the people who risked everything to bring us a new style of game.

edit: For instance, they made lots of sequels to the original RE, but there's a reason why the first and second were so highly regarded. They were the best in the series even if their successors had better visuals.

Well pointing out the fact that the gameplay core will/is most likely going to remain the same, I think from the trailer we've seen of RE5, gives us a little more idea of "scare tatics" of the zombies. I'm expecting NON scripted events that happen differently each time you play through, limited ammo depending on available bags, pockets or pouchs you can carry, I'm going to go out on a limb and say you can choose between iron sight aiming and 3rd person aiming, and of course, some sort of female twist on the whole thing.
