Can the GAF servers handle E3?

E3 2011 actually went by rather smoothly, thanks to a server upgrade. GAF even broke its "Most users online" record of the time, IIRC.

It seems that the servers are actually up to it. But DoS attacks and problems at where the server facility is, undermine this.

They can handle it but they probably won't, something will go wrong somewhere with power problems, hardware issues etc.

For me personally It doesn't really matter since I don't like to look at GAF and watch E3 at the same time.

Especially this year since we will have 1 new console announcement, full PS4 show off, and Nintendo Megatons.

I thought it handled it fine last year, but I can't remember, since I was just watching E3 and not really coming here that often.

Shut down OT/Community, disable all avatars and gifs (text only reactions) in the E3 Megaton threads during the period of the conference

Members only access.

Problem solved.

gotta love refreshing a page of an announcement thread for an hour only to post something like "FUCK YESSS!!"

my excitement must be heard

It might have a few hiccups at first but Evilore has ways of making things work- disabling the search function, turning off avatars, locking all boards down except for gaming and finally, if things still aren't working making it members only for the week.

We should all start a GAF Mumble for E3.

GAF going down is inevitable. ESPECIALLY this year.

It sounds harsh, but a cool solution. But the GAF ould miss A LOT of site clicks.

Can any city's streets handle its highest rush hour? ;)

While GAF have been handling high traffic time much better than several years ago, I still think it'll go down during MS's and Sony's conferences.

Where is that funny pic with Evilore claiming that the servers will be able to handle E3, and in the background there is a pic of GAF with an error message.

I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest to see them go down at least few times come E3 time, if that is what you are asking.

Hell, the servers were down 2 or 3 times that one night when they captured the second suspect in the Boston Marathon Bombing.

I think a way to get rid of traffic is to have members only access during E3. So you are required to login to view GAF. Of course do this only until traffic dies down.

Eh, I think GAF will be alright if we shut down the OT and turn off avatars. The last few E3s have been relatively smooth if I recall correctly.

Inevitable. This years E3 is like a perfect storm with 2 new console blowouts and Nintendo on the back foot.

But I think E3 is the least of GAF's problems.....most likely from mid-May or earlier, and beyond E3, we'll be getting some bombs dropped with game leaks/announcements. Just too much stuff to be announced to fit in 2-3 days of E3.

The last 3 E3's have been pretty poor so hopefully this years one makes up for that.

You'd be better off with a quota of non members at any one time during conference streams. Even then that's potential ad revenue lost for EL.

I just hope the websites streaming the conferences do I better job than during the Sony meeting. I had to go through five sites to find a stable stream.

Not enough power. They should stop running them and then relaunch new, more powerful servers to compete with the upcoming EC2 and Akamai hardware.

absolutely not. as soon as a press conference starts everyone will post "it's starting!!!" at once and nuke the servers from orbit.

Can they handle it?
