Can the GAF servers handle E3?

Is there any way to give the servers more bandwidth or something? Just for those few hours around each conference? I mean, the additional load is surely quite predictable, unlike the random events in Boston.

Which brings in ad money, which is what they want.

Shortening the down time would be nice. It was down for 40 minutes at a time during the Boston incidents.

A single joke in any conference is enough to collapse the servers since every poster will post the joke in real time followed by a "lol".
Last year Reggie said "My Body is ready" again acknowledging the meme and GAF went down that instant, the servers couldn't take so many "lol's"

Nintendo's conference alone will at least have the following:

- Super Smash Bros. IV, for WiiU and 3DS (media confirmed)
- Super Mario WiiU (confirmed playable)
- Mario Kart 8 (confirmed playable)
- Retro Studios' WiiU project
- Treasure's 3DS project
- New Wii Sports for WiiU
- Pokémon X and Y
- A Link to the Past II
- The Wind Waker HD
- Yoshi's Island 3DS
- Yarn Yoshi WiiU
- PIKMIN 3
- Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
- Mario Golf: World Tour
- Mario Party 3DS

Could probably get by if there were no conference threads, and people just made individual topics as things were announced. The conference threads normally just degenerate into gif spam and people trying to outdo each other with their reactions, and there is no real discussion of value taking place.

I get that some people enjoy the excitement of watching the conference together, but I'm willing to bet not having individual conference threads would cut down on alot of the increased spam that occurs and possibly contribute to more stability.

Conference threads are the best part. Of course there's nothing of substance being said. But it is the raw unbridled emotion that makes it priceless. All of GAF's enthusiasm comes out with no restraint at that time. Pure passion for games!

What if there's another surprise guest? I doubt they can top Snake, but what if?
 
With avatars disabled, discussion boards shut down and possibly off topic seeing some downtime. I still predict gaf blowing up on numerous occasions
 
Does it actually matter if it goes down during E3? I mean, 90% of the posts in the threads are people going "HOLY SHIT" or "OMG" followed by whatever the announcement is.
 
OT and Community forums should be kept offline for the big conference day (the actual E3 should be fine, it's the day and a half when you get the big 3 conferences that will kill us.
 
Considering they never have in prior years, why would this year be different? Big year and GAF has had a lot of growth. Should limit the the posting time for users to 5 or 10 mins between posts.
 
I hate to be harsh but I'm liking the idea of restricting NeoGAF to Members-only during the conferences so they won't crash. After the conference, open it back up to everyone.
 
This year's E3 is going to put a lot of load though due to the next-gen consoles. We saw during the PS4 conference how people went completely crazy for a while, so yeah it's difficult to say but I think the infrastructure is in place and just needs to be optimized well.

But seriously, he said "my body was ready!" That was a megaton right there!
 
They get beefed up every year and they still go down so take that as you will. OT is probably going to have to be shut down again and we'll probably be losing avatars during the big 3's conferences. I'm pretty sure there's an IRC channel too.

We should get all the dates and times confirmed before the middle of May.

Good lord. The internetz will explode......and that's just Nintendo's stuff. Someone should make a potential PS4 and 720 list.
 
I don't know the server details here, but I think neoGAF should use some cloud services like Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud to avoid downtimes.
