Can the GAF servers handle E3?

Good lord. The internetz will explode......and that's just Nintendo's stuff. Someone should make a potential PS4 and 720 list.

Sure, I'll add Nintendo too to make it a perfect list.

- Super Mario WiiU (confirmed playable)
- Mario Kart 8 (confirmed playable)
- Retro Studios' WiiU project
- New Wii Sports for WiiU
- The Wind Waker HD
- Yarn Yoshi WiiU
- PIKMIN 3
- The Wonderful 101
- BAYONETTA 2
- Monolith Soft's X
- SMT x Fire Emblem
- Wii Fit U
- Unannounced games

Sony (PS4):
- Final Fantasy
- Infamous: Second Son
- Killzone: Shadow Fall
- Naughty Dog's game
- Knack
- Drive Club
- Level 5's game (not confirmed to be exclusive)
- Ready At Dawn's Game
- Unannounced games

- Ryse (Kinect)
- Alan Wake 2
- Forza Motersport 5
- Black Tusk Studio's new game
- Unannounced games

It's probably going to crash a whole hell of a lot this year.

Big first party Nintendo reveals and next gen megatons. oh my.

E3 Dates and Times
Ubisoft: June 10 - TBA Time
EA: TBA Date - TBA Time
Microsoft: TBA Date - TBA Time
Sony: TBA Date - TBA Time
Nintendo: TBA Date - TBA Time

We should get all the dates and times confirmed before the middle of May.

It's almost a sure thing that EA and Microsoft's Conference will be on the 10th and Nintendo's on the 11th.

The question mark is Sony. They changed dates a few times.

Yeah, I'm thinking it will be this.

E3 Dates and Times
Ubisoft: June 10 - Late Afternoon
EA: June 10 - Evening
Microsoft: June 10 - Morning
Sony: June 10 or 11- Afternoon or Evening
Nintendo: June 11 - Morning

Sony will be the evening no matter what. They always are. Plus, they can't do it in the afternoon on the 11th, it would overlap the first day of E3.

This years E3 is the starting gun for the next console wars, everything till then is Phoney War nonsense. I wonder how many multi paragraph long melt downs we'll miss out on reading and laughing at this year.

Like all big events, GAF will likely be lost in my browser as just another non-functioning tab while I'm stuck reading a live-blog and a stream that either skips out or has some annoying commentator.

And when gaf does work during the conferences, the only thing I'll get to read are all the trolls that spam the threads with 'zzzzzzzzz e3 2006 was better'.

Even if this was a typical E3 gaf would be down but considering how epic this E3 has the potential to be I think we could break Gafs back permanently.

I seem to remember from E3 2010 that Sony had their conference a few hours after Nintendo's conference.

Maybe I'm wrong though.

Shut down community, OT and have no avatars. When I was a lurker I liked coming here during E3.

I am not going to say screw the lurkers now that I am a junior member.

Plus those lurkers drive a lot of ad revenue so.... yeah.

Nope. That's why I hope they'll locked it down to members-only.

On one hand, I wouldn't be able to contribute my own dumb opinions.

On the other, I've experienced the last 3 E3s without being a member of the site and had fun just reading(when the server didn't EXPLODE at any rate), so I'd be ok with this. :P

But no, they'll go down, frequently during the conferences. If anything, it's a good barometer for how crazy shit is during one. :P

Which brings in ad money, which is what they want.

Shortening the down time would be nice. It was down for 40 minutes at a time during the Boston incidents.

Are 40 minutes of zero hits better than 2 hours of hits from registered users only, though?

I think EviLore should consider locking down only during the conferences to registered users (not only approved members). Stay open for everything else. Close Off-Topic. Disable avatars.

Heck, put GAF in Print mode.

By June you will be a Member. You will be a Member on May 22nd, provided you're on your best behavior.

Junior -> Member is 300 posts/3 months, although some unfortunate souls never make it out of their probationary status.

Would it help at all to somehow lock down all existing threads except for the conference threads, and any new announcement-specific threads that are created as the press conferences unfold? This, combined with disabling avatars and locking down OT and Community?

Would upping the post reply delay time to about 5 minutes or so help with the bandwidth? People might hesitate a bit more about posting random nonsense if they could only make one post every 5 minutes.

Hmm, that's an interesting idea. Not sure how I feel about it. Again, part of the appeal of the conference mega-threads is the huge explosion of reaction posts. It's a great way to revisit a moment later on.

Well that's a little intimidating but I think a can make it. Probably..... I hope.

Anyways, I think EviLore knows what he's doing. NeoGaf may slow down but I don't think it will crash.

Best memories have been lurking on Neogaf before I signed up. The best times were when I watched how Neogaf would go crazy around E3. It's always exciting to watch and it would be unfortunate to leave out people who just want to watch the craziness ensue.

Yeah, I have to agree with PshycoNinja, I don't think we should shut out the lurkers. I'm sure there are many lurkers who really look forward to seeing GAF's coverage/reactions to E3.

But I trust EviLore knows what's best. He has access to the server info and knows what sort of strain they may be under. I just hope there's a solution where server strain can be minimized and kept stable while allowing the lurkers to watch the festivities unfold.

I'm sure all the admins will be doing their best to keep it up, I'm also sure that their best won't be enough.

It's down more than the average site, which is disappointing for such a large site that's important for video games and famous for it.

Then again like others said, it crashes becauses there's pages and pages of "OMG WOOWW" posts for every little thing that happens during the press conferences.

I don't have high hopes :(

GAF went down several times last week because of Boston, and that wasn't even gaming related.

Yeah I was using GAF to follow what people were listening to on the police scanner, but it went down twice for about 20-30 minutes and I had to go elsewhere for updates.

I hope it will be able to handle it this time then. New consoles and all.

I think this (making it members-only) can work wonderfully, though a bit harsh lol.

Is it that harsh? It would only need to be locked down during the press conferences, I think. Maybe an hour before and an hour after?

Would be great to finally be able to actually use the forum during those moments...

Do people still use GAF only during the livestreams? These past couple years I just used Twitter to post quick reactions. But I guess it doesn't work well if you aren't too connected with people

Nah I stick to Twitter now. There's plenty of GAF people I follow anyway, it's more stable, and no 60 second posting restrictions.

dont worry wario i'll be using the GT livestream

Remember that scene from Event Horizon?

You know the scene I'm talking about.

That scene will be re-enacted in the data center where the GAF server is located.

Offtopic, Avatars, some features .... GAF Lite will handle

Never understood that .... people will only read what you wrote years after when they go "do you remember the meltdown when .."
