Can the GAF servers handle E3?

I haven't seen Database Errors in a while.

Though there seems to be missing avatars.

Avatars are fixed.

Would be great if the forums are still up during the event, as many others have said I enjoy reading the reactions from the user base just as much as reading the actual news.

No, and it's pretty pathetic. Been here for 8+ years and its always been plagued by performance issues. I say pathetic because there is no excuse anymore.

For much, or all, of those 8 years the work of maintaining the servers has been on a volunteer basis. Don't be a dick.

This reminds me when Reggie said ''My body was ready'' during last E3.

Everything went down the very moment he said it, that was hilarious. :P

Your completely missing the point, and volunteers or not it has nothing to do with administration.

This forum provides a service to people and in return generates money (and a lot) from those people visiting, therefore they are customers.

It's really unacceptable after all this time to still have server performance issues.

members only
shut down OT (sorry OT)
5 minutes between posts to reduce spam
anyone hitting F5 500 times per minute gets locked out for 5 minutes

Customer because you click around and generate a tiny amount of ad revenue to keep the site going? Get over yourself man - The day you start paying them directly to use GAF, you have a valid claim.

I love E3, and some of the best times on GAF are following the rollercoaster 'liveblog' threads. But sometimes they are too fast and you can't keep up. In those situations maybe its not so bad the site goes down now and then

could the site change how quickly it tries to respond to users? so eg you get slower response but its more stable?

Oh ok. You totally set me straight. You clearly know much more about this than me.

Maybe you should volunteer your time to fix this unacceptable breach of your standards.

As a Web developer it's certainly not easy to serve thousands of users posting quasi real time. Maybe GAF should update the rate limit to two minutes. Most of the E3 threads are rubbish and Nintendo isn't even doing one.

Is this an issue of server cost? Or actual administration? Optimization?

If its the former, couldnt GAF members donate to beef up server size/memory just for that week?

I'm dumb when it comes to this stuff btw. So if nothing i said makes sense, my apologies.

Edit: okay i probably dont understand how this works. :p

Totally agree, i will not be subscribing to GAF-Gold next month!
And to think all the cash i've sinked in clothes for my GAvatar.

Really not my place to get into specifics, I just want to be clear that you shouldn't feel the need to apologize. I was calling out someone being a dick. Asking how you can help, even if it's not the way things work, is not being a dick.

GAF going down is a sign that there is big news. Its a perfect way to gauge GAF reaction.

E3 wouldnt be the same without it - instead of page after page of "OMG!!!" the servers go down for a few minutes to let people calm down :D

I miss "guru meditation"

Errors I've seen today:

"Encoding error"
"Database error"
"503 Service Unavailable"

GAF held together pretty well during the Xbox event, with 15,000 people on. I'm expecting more during E3 so hopefully they'll learn from the Xbox event and prepare themselves.

It went out for a shorter time than during the last Nintendo Direct, right?

But those encoding errors after the show were new to me.

I couldn't do anything for an hour after the conference. Site was loading fine half the time, but I couldn't post at all, kept crapping out when I pressed 'reply'

Still, I'd rather that than writing an essay and then having it go tits-up :P

Nope. That's why I hope they'll locked it down to members-only.

This would be amazing, but I'm pretty sure it won't fly.

Got a regular maintenance message at some point, assume it was related to pulling down who quoted me and search functionality.

As for the OP, no way in hell.

You'll get snippets at best, even if OT does get shut down again, which I presume it will.

It was down for the last 30 minutes of the conference + a good hour afterwards.

I probably didn't help by F5'ing every 5 seconds. :D

Luckily, some people are providing alternatives, such as the Twitch chat room which was run earlier. GAF will die E3, we just need to have alternatives in place to wait out the downtime.

No they can't. I'm happy to volunteer my expertise on web development, but most likely they're doing what they can. If they're making the type of money on the site that I think they are, they should just use akamai and say the hell with it.

Gaf was down for me for 40 minutes of the 60 minute xbox thing, lol. E3 is going to murder the forums.

If by that you mean "shat itself and went down for an hour+" then yeeah
