Can the GAF servers handle E3?

Evilore should take additional measures besides growing the number of servers. He should disable the site for non-members, disable off-topic and the community sections, as well as avatars and images. It'll only last for the duration of the conferences, so it's no big deal.

This might be a good idea...

I often wonder why GAF hasn't moved to cloud servers where they can dynamically scale based on demand. Might even be cheaper than hosting and maintaining their own servers.

I think Evilore should add a donate button to the top horizontal list next to "Store" or somewhere there. Link it paypal or something.

It'd be small, harmless, and inconspicuous, but it would allow those of us who love the site (and can afford it) to donate to it.

I would.

But isn't GAF already in the cloud? Or does that cloud need another cloud.

No, NeoGAF is not in the cloud. Unfortunately "cloud" is often interpreted only as a synonym for "online," but that's not the concept. Neogaf evidently runs on a dedicated server; it could indeed benefit greatly from moving to a cloud platform, and would in that case never go down again (unless the cloud-hosting company shuts it down for consuming too many resources beyond its licensing or payment; but the inherent server limits would be gone). But I don't believe the old vBulletin system NeoGAF is built upon can be run on anything but a traditional, dedicated host, so not much to be done.

I'm damn curious myself. I work for a company that does highly available scale-out databases that run on aws, and lots of the errors I see have to do with database overloading.

There are more guests than members. Disabling that would just be stupid.

I have my backup bags of Doritos and a copy of a George Carlin CD to make sure I maintain the proper levels of cynicism sans the GAF

It's going to be mad. I always find it hard to connect during E3. Such is the way of E3 time. But last year wasn't anywhere near as memorable. I want tons of .gifs and awkward/funny moments like the years before it.

Single console reveals were enough to make the site unusable. New announcements for all 3 major consoles will likely kill this website and probably the live streams and several other websites too.

GAF always buckles under the stress, no matter what measures 'Lore takes.

In the past he's completely shut down the OT, shut off searching and disabled the ability for non registered users to view the forums and the site still got utterly crushed.

Evilore, cover your eyes

YES, EMPHATICALLY YES.

Evilore knows what he must do.

Summon the "512GB GDDR5 128 core Xeon piggibacked by the 300,000 servers on Xbone" servers for exponential gains in GAF performance!

This thing went down during the Nintendo Direct where practically all they did was outline games we already knew were coming this summer.

GAF is going to go down like the fucking Hindenburg during E3.

Hell, it went down multiple times during the week of the Boston bombings, and that wasn't even gaming related.

I could be wrong but I don't know if the guys disabled avatars and other measures to reduce server load. I know for a bit there we didn't have the "Who quoted me" feature so I'm sure they will take everything down minus the ability to read threads if need be lol

Hopefully they are ready because we have 2 big conferences and Nintendo directs alongside Apple doing it's thing. I fear for Gromph :P

It can barely survive Nintendo Directs...if I'm on vacation, I'll either just wait until the evening /night when everything has cooled down a little or just wait until E3 is over. If I'm working, I'll just take a book or something for work during breaks haha.

I don't understand why there would be an issue.

My internet always works perfectly and I haven't had a real outage in years. So why would I have any trouble getting onto GAF?

People are over reacting to this whole thing.

I see what you did there. If it goes down it is not the end of the world.

I think during E3 lurkers can't access the site so it's not necessarily comparable

No, they can. I was a lurker for last E3 here on GAF before I made an account. Could see all of GAF. But I do believe server caching was turned on so everything lagged by 5 minutes for those of us who were not logged in to reduce server load.
