Can the GAF servers handle E3?

Images aren't hosted on GAF servers so it takes up no bandwidth.

But even if it's hosted on another site, doesn't it still take bandwidth for it to load on the forums?

Again, don't know dick about how this sort of thing works.

It doesn't affect server load, it affects client load (how long the page is actually rendered in your browser versus how long it takes the server to respond to your request to load the page). Although tons of different requests as a page loads certainly do slow it down on the client side, that's why most sites will lump all their CSS/JS into minified compressed single files if they can help it.

That's not what I said--I made it clear that there are other options that contribute more to load that would be disabled first, and it's unlikely that it'd get to the point where OT would need to be closed. Which is still the case. When 20,000 people are viewing gaming and 2,000 viewing OT, OT is not the major thing causing server load. :p

You said virtually no chance.. Close enough McDuck!

I see numerous infinite power of the cloud jokes have already been made.

Every little bit helps!

So where do I go to see a good list of news tomorrow when GAF goes down? I don't mean like IGN or Polygon, I mean the real shit.

Even if GAF "could" handle the traffic this year, it will never be the same without "server down" issues... Is part of GAF culture!

Huh, interesting. Thanks for the info.

Not that I know exactly their setup, but what would make sense is members actually posting a shitton being the problem. Nonmembers shouldn't add significant load, they aren't dynamic, you can show a slightly older version of the site since they can't change anything.

So really, go to the irc channel. I would think it'd be smart to up the time between posts to two minutes instead of one though. But maybe that'd piss people off :P.

Yes that is a problem.

They need the power of cloud. Gaf exclusive for XboxOne.

Has you considered utilizing the infinite power of the cloud, Evilore?

We are already in the cloud. (You guys need to check prices)

If search/post history is really just a drop in the bucket it would be pretty sweet if it could be kept, it's GAF's best feature! So so so so useful.

I will explain at the end of this post.

Hoping for a miracle and GAF stays up, as I have work tomorrow.

Will pay extra for GAF Platinum.

I hope too, you know the stress start at 1:30AM (my local time)

The answer is no. The answer is always no.

Let's hope for a yes.

sometimes it goes down for "maintenance." what do they even do during this time?

Mainly i put that webpage to cut the queries at the Database servers and check the problems. (Sometimes i optimise things)

GAF staying up during E3 is a miracle that I don't expect to happen.

Lets hope for a yes then. :)

Now on business.

Avatars, no point to disable, they are served trough a CDN.

CSS/JS are forced to catch, so it also wont load the servers.

Search should not be querying the DB so maybe it can stay up. (Maybe i will disable the automatic update every 10 minutes.)

Every server is balanced, if on DB (The most critical) goes down, the other one should be up in 3 seconds, but remember, it need to catch all the sessions from first one.

I added more caching for the queries so it will be less stressful for the DB servers.

Prior the E3 (1 week ago) i configured another load balancer, so now it will handle better the bulk visitors.

And of course i will be ready and armed in case anything happens.

The Who Quoted Me will be disabled during E3

Ah good deal, thanks! I guess that disabling the 10 minute auto update is what causes post history to sometimes not refresh? (like those times when only posts from the day before show up with nothing recent).

Hope everything works out!

I can see during the PS4 reveal it can. I doubt it will be that much for the Xbone traffic as they basically blew their load at the reveal.

Ill be at work during the Xbone conference so I don't really care if it crashes but It better stay up for the PS4 conference! Although if Sony hits with DRM like MS this place is REALLY fucked.

Neogaf went down just for the pre-announce Xbox show. E3 is just going to shut it down for hours :( Such a shame too.

Since you mentioned it, I wanted to ask. Has this thing been on the fritz recently? At least for me, it doesn't notify me of all the people that have quoted me. Sometimes the most recent quote will be from like a day or two ago, even if I've been quoted several times within the hour.

E3 will destroy us. And if the sheer traffic of posts don't do it, Microsoft shills will hack the servers and finish the job...

It's weird, I think it depends on how they quote you or if they edit anything in the post (example shortening it to reply to one part). Or its completely random, who knows.

It's gonna crash!

Next year we should start a donation pool a few months before E3, so we can rent a huge server, just for this week. I'm sure we could raise enough cash money from forum dwellers to help out the cause...

NeoGAF is a for-profit organization. We shouldn't have to foot the bill.
