Pretty much. Also forums that have over-moderation always falls apart. Not only is it not reasonable given the size of a community and the time mods have, it's just a terrible environment to be in.

In any case, usually waifu seems to be a bigger issue with FE:A and Persona threads. Unfortunately, even banning waifu talk would be an issue, because it just puts unnecessary hoops to jump through when actually discussing a gameplay mechanic... or at least for FE:A with the whole min/maxing and skill distribution thing.
That and probably VNs.... it's too rooted to actually remove really.

On a more serious note, I sympathize with the annoyance at threads at times being derailed because of the way some people express excitement. The problem runs far deeper than words though. So banning any superficial thing is not going to really solve it. We do not encourage threads where people want to just talk about a game being derailed into "list my favorite virtual girlfriends" by a few users, but sometimes it happens anyway. In the same way, we don't encourage news threads or movie threads turning into "Omg these women are so hot I cannot control myself from posting about what I want to do to them!" threads. It's generally embarrassing, but it becomes increasingly harder to moderate consistently due to the volume of the forum. Just because you might see it happen in a thread, does not mean we condone it.
tl;dr - We're not going to ban waifus, but we would appreciate it if people kept their waifu battles to themselves, unless they're playing Dengeki Fighting Climax, then I guess waifu ranking actually matters.

Hey, I moderated at Nintendo's NSider forums for a couple of years.
You couldn't do anything there.
You couldn't say your age, couldn't say where you were from, couldn't give anyone your Friend Code, couldn't give anyone any sort of outside information (email, IM names, etc), there were piles of words you weren't allowed to say, etc.
They made it along relatively alright.
Until Nintendo decided to shut them down =(

Some people just don't get it. Waifu is a term of utmost respect and esteem. A person can never be called something more reverent than waifu or husbando. It's truly the highest honor there is, to be someone's waifu.
