Can we ban the word "waifu" from NeoGAF?

No, I'm not the only one. A lot of our moderation on these issues is done by a group after lengthy discussion. However, we are all volunteers and would all prefer if people would take some responsibility and self-moderate using common sense more often.

It's kind of what people agree too when signing up (to follow the rules and behave). I've seen forums that try to over moderate and it's a disaster. GAF's approach is the best. Allow the community to take personal responsibility and self moderate, only step in when you have to.

So I agree 100% with what you are saying. It not only makes the most sense, but it's also the most realistic way to handle things. Which is why I don't agree with OP. But I would say, if the Waifu thread derails are that big of a problem and common, I think giving bans for people derailing subjects with objectification discussions is more than reasonable.

I feel like if you banned the word SLAY then POPgaf would be abandoned after none too long.

Anyway, words guys... they're a thing. Just gonna have to deal.

As it is, you take away Best Girl from AnimeGAF and they'll likely collapse in on themselves.

Then again, telling AnimeGAF to cut it the fuck out with the "Lewd" stuff hasn't killed the beast, so who knows.

.......why?

Sounds like unnessicery cencorship and not really any less derailing than reaction gifs, snappy one liners, first posts, meltdowns or terrisus. but that's what makes gaf fun to follow.

Real talk though: I don't think it needs a ban, I think that various communities just need to be better about responding to criticism, especially if its backed up by the general sentiment of the moderation team.

I'm of two minds about some of the more...skeevy content specific threads on GAF for media that I don't even watch or play. On the one hand, well, its in its own thread, I can ignore it. On the other hand, it still does kind of bug me

Meh

If you actually want to ban something that hinders users then ban bloated gifs that slow down pages. Can't optimise your clip to under 3MB? Too bad, back to jpeg with you.

The high council of mods has convened, and we have decided that there has to be a balance in the force. "Waifu" and "Best Girl" will be banned if we can agree to also ban Banderas gifs and PopGAF reaction gifs.

You drive a hard bargain.
But, the sacrifice is worth it to be rid of
Banderas and PopGAF >.>

That's one of many reasons I love Opera's option to disable animated images.

And continuing on my weird rant, it definitely gets particularly weird when you have a community that becomes tighter-knit: You feel comfortable about where everyone stands on the issue and you feel like you can start joking about this kind of stuff. But, as I sometimes learned the hard way, this isn't a small community forum: it's a big open discussion board. People get real alienated by that shit.

It's just way too easy to take it too far. That's why it's not something you can really moderate or ban, it's just something more people need to be aware of so they can turn it off at the appropriate times. It's just about being aware, really.

I too think we should use force to make people aware

You have to admit that this has been a bit overplayed here...

The Animal Crossing thing still happens sometimes. There was another thread when Isabelle was announced as an assist trophy in Smash that quickly got locked up after only 3 pages because people were posting creepy stuff.

If we're on the subject of just randomly calling for terms to be banned, I say ban "strawman", "victim blaming", and any other words that essentially mean "I don't like what you're arguing so stop".

If the cutting out lewd had managed to kill animegaf that would be an extremely sad state of affairs.

On a more serious note, I sympathize with the annoyance at threads at times being derailed because of the way some people express excitement. The problem runs far deeper than words though. So banning any superficial thing is not going to really solve it. We do not encourage threads where people want to just talk about a game being derailed into "list my favorite virtual girlfriends" by a few users, but sometimes it happens anyway. In the same way, we don't encourage news threads or movie threads turning into "Omg these women are so hot I cannot control myself from posting about what I want to do to them!" threads. It's generally embarrassing, but it becomes increasingly harder to moderate consistently due to the volume of the forum. Just because you might see it happen in a thread, does not mean we condone it.

tl;dr - We're not going to ban waifus, but we would appreciate it if people kept their waifu battles to themselves, unless they're playing Dengeki Fighting Climax, then I guess waifu ranking actually matters. :P

Then most one off comments with the potential to derail would have to be scrutinized as well. You would risk changing the culture of this place.

Discussion here is a fine balance. Occasionally one side wins out or takes over and Evilore has to step in and reset the pace to make it most enjoyable for the majority of the posters here, not just a certain subset.

That's why you leave it up to certain scenarios when it becomes a problem. It's not reasonable to police everyone and ban every single time someone derails. But if threads have a consistent issue of subjects being derailed with female objectification, I don't see how telling people to knock that off suddenly changes the culture of this place.

But I agree, you can't follow every person and ban any time someone does this. Just saying if a thread gets out of hand with it, I have no issue with it being moderated. Much better solition then banning words and trying to pre-capture bad behavior before it happens. Which is what I think OP is suggesting with word bans.

Done. Ban ayy lmao at the same time, and use of the word 'lewd'. Also ban all of PopGAF, and their associates.

Moderation has gotten a lot better about these in the last year or so though. Like, I'd say it was straight up becoming a problem last year but this past year has seen some very active moderation comments and thread lockings that I've appreciated

Might as well ban relationship advice and medical advice threads while we're at it. Probably created mostly by a bunch of waifu-best girl lovers anyways.

Victim blaming has gotten out of control. For sure.

Kirino is top tier in that game, so fuck that. Ban waifus.

Yah, also, like you said, mods can't be everywhere all the time. Just gonna have to read through the din as best you can.

But I already had my banderas and popgaf gifs doused in oil and ready to be thrown into a communal bonfire!
