Can we ban the word "waifu" from NeoGAF?

Tell people to stay on topic?

The solution shouldn't be for me to have to closely monitor every thread so people don't have to think about what they're posting. But I've certainly done that; in fact, I have had entire communities of people angry at me and talking about how I'm such a bitch on various social media outlets for doing exactly that. I got angry PMs when I told the Animal Crossing thread to stop posting creepy sexual things relating to the characters in that game and alienating other members, too.

I mean, a lot of this comes along with being a moderator, but in some cases I just have to shout "really?" It's like some people forget that they're on a public forum where hundreds of thousands of people are reading their posts.

But how will banning the word stop that discussion from happening. Just start banning people that derail threads with that kind of talk.

I didn't call for banning it. I'm actually calling for people to use their brains and learn to read situations more than anything else. Saying "just ban people who do it" is naive. It takes lots of (volunteer) time to monitor and go through threads looking for that kind of thing, and it's silly when it could just not happen in the first place.

This thread is literally going to become a bunch of cute versions of notable historical figures, inanimate objects and vicious animals. It's only a matter of time till it devolves to kawaii Hitler or Stalin so lets just stop here and agree the OP just needs to find a waifu of his own. No need to be sour grapes.

BAHAHAHAHA! These are golden.

The way it's used doesn't matter when the result is the same: it dominates and derails threads regularly. I'd like to discuss a game that happens to feature multiple women without being interrupted by "best girl" and "waifu" discussions. It's a nuisance.

I believe that is my main issue with it when it's used.

Still think the solution is banning people derailing threads with a specific kind of subject and not the word itself.

Yeah, i agree with this. Ask mod to warn/ban the guy who derail the thread with Waifu talk.

Note: i like waifu talk, just gotta do it in the right thread :p

Sorry I was talking in general. We both agree. I still think you guys should just start banning people when they derail threads with this kind of talk. Hopefully when their ban is up people will curve these kind of discussions in the future. And you are right, mods can't monitor every single thread and make people behave. It takes a lot work moderating. I've been an admin on a forum this size before and it takes a lot of time, and all you get back is the satisfaction of helping a community you love.

I respect you guys and understand the immense amount of time and work you put in for free. I still wouldn't be opposed to issuing bans though if threads get derailed with that kind of talk.

alienating other members
This is what it comes down to. But if you mention that things like that make you feel alienated, you'll probably just be called a kill joy, prude, etc.

I guess that's what we get for not being 2D girls. :P

It's honestly really disgusting, and it's why I stay far away from persona games discussion even though I really enjoy them. It's like some of the people in those threads use the games as a stalking simulator or something, and the mods lax attitude towards it has let it sink into other discussions far too pervasively for comfort. Like op says, it's fucking disgusting that we can't have a single conversation about a female anywhere on gaf without it devolving into drooling over her in increasingly embarrassing levels until every reasonable people just abandon the thread and the only thing left is a circle wank over the person that borders on stalking. It's Abhorrent, and it realy drives home how immature and gross this forum can be once you dig into discussions.

Just because you ban "mai waifu" doesn't mean threads getting derailed by "best girl/boy/animal/plant" will magically go away. They're here to stay sadly as more games cater to said demographic.

You should actually go back in history more to realize that you don't even need that demographic for that to happen.

Since this thread is about requesting bans, can I ask for Daniel Bryan fans to be banned? I've been making a list so most of the work is done. You just kind of need to action it really.

Someone please, thanks.

Thank you

Although there are certainly plenty of games that are knowingly designing their casts to encourage that shit

I'm not disagreeing with your main point, but...

There are plenty of things on these boards that make me feel alienated >.>

a friend onf mine was permanently banned from here because he was explaining 4chan slang in a 4chan-related thread. He wasn't aiming the word at anybody in particular, he was just explaining what it was. And he was banned for life for being potty-mouthed.

my point is, banning the absolute use of a word without any context is a stupid idea.
/v/ "slang" includes many racial and gender slurs. Unsurprisingly, defending those when you're not on /v/ will not give people a good impression.

What if im talking about my wife and accidentally put a u instead of an e, would I get banned?
note i dont have a wife i only have fictional wifus

I don't get offended but I find it annoying and wish it would go away. Much like senpai noticed me and people adding "desu, -kun and -san" tk the end of their sentences.

True story : I went to Japan with a guy that did this for a whole trip IRL. It broke me.

This is the crux of the issue, I feel. It's almost like the portrayal of women in a lot of Japanese pop culture these days is at an all-time low because that mindset/culture is more prevalent than ever, as well. (Or maybe that's just my imagination). I'm not saying it shouldn't exist at all, but that it's unnecessary in a lot of cases.

It's all about context, I don't quite mind the usage of the word in a playful manner by people, I've done it myself, but derailing entire threads (such as FE) can be an issue.

I don't see a need to ban the world though, just follow the general rules. If someone is constantly derailing threads with "waifu" stuff a ban is an acceptable means of dealing with the situation, and if a thread is getting ruined over discussing waifus over a mod can step in and give a warning for users to cut it out (such as with the Persona thread) or ban people if needed.

Get this SJW bullshit out of here.

Banning words is some thought crime bullshit, and Evilore himself said sexually objectification is okay so long as you aren't harradding someone.

Eh. I think there is a real issue when a thread is about something else, then gets derailed by people wanting to talk about how sexy someone is or how they want to marry them. You don't think that kind of derailment is a problem?

Especially if it's a common problem when any subject has females involved. I agree banning words isn't a solution. But people derailing threads with a specific kind of talk is IMO fine.

And see, this is why I hate it. I love persona and I love the persona community, because there's such a wide variety of topics in the game to discuss. However, more often than not, at least on the discussion board, Persona threads devolve into banter about the female characters. It's weird, obnoxious, and borderline sexist. And I know I've been a part of it before too, but I really realized how much it was bothering other people.

Now the same thing is happening with Fire Emblem and it's really bugging me out. I've got no problem that these systems are in these games I love, but it just attracts this really disturbing and alienating conversation that dominates the scene.

You can ban those words but those discussions will still happen, just without silly anime terms flying around because thats what the people in said thread wanted to talk about.

Should we ban the word "bad" because every Destiny thread ends up with people saying it's a bad game?

Japanese pop culture as a whole? Couldn't say. A sizable portion of japanese game and other otaku media? Absofuckinglutely. Its honestly pretty slim pickings for me at the moment as a JRPG fan who can't stand this stuff

I leave that up to the mods to decide what to do.

While we're on the topic of banning things I'm putting in my vote for 2 frame tumblr gifs.
Especially ESPECIALLY if they subtitle a quote and the entire quote isn't within the .gif. GRINDS MY GEARS SO HARD.

It sounds like you're kind of the sole moderator in these discussions, but I'm gonna assume that's not the case and before this topic I wasn't even aware of this as a problem.

There's nothing wrong with waifus. It's akin to telling someone your favorite character in any other media. Favorites also beg conversation.

B-but it's not like I wanna debate this topic with your baka lookin' ass or anything, senpai.
