Can we has back our Iran thread?

As someone who was only peripherally lurking, I'm surprised it was locked. I don't see much out of norm behavior. But then I wasn't closely monitoring it so what do I know?

The thread died, never to be brought back again. We didn't want it to happen, but it did. Praise be to the Mods.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

When there are threads about big world events, I just wish people posting about things completely unrelated to the event itself would be warned and then banned from the thread if they continue, rather than the rest of us not being able to discuss a major event.

I didn't read the thread, but I'm glad it's gone because it was a ban bloodbath. Hopefully fewer people get themselves banned now.
Its too bad people can't control themselves and act civil

But people are stupid so....

Agreed. I was busy for the day then checked at night and poof gone. I'd like to see it reopened and just thread ban people that can't discourse with decorum.

I'll get this in before the thread possibly gets Order 66'ed - if the US actually moves to blockade the Strait (which I thought they were already kinda doing), then things will be getting interesting. I read somewhere that two US warships have transited the Strait a few days ago so perhaps they've mapped a safe passage for rest of merchant shipping.

Not really revelatory but it felt like to me that the other objective of these negotiations was to buy time for the US and Israel. Trump's seemingly off-the-cuff timelines provided enough leeway to move assets into the region and rearm. With the George H.W. Bush and the recently repaired Gerald R. Ford heading back into theatre, the IRGC will soon be staring down the barrel of three CSGs operating against them.

I actually like the occasional political thread on here if there's a big enough event going on, because this place (to an extent) allows diversity of thought. Most people here would get downvoted to oblivion on Reddit or dogpiled and banned on Era. At least Gaf offered a space where you can air your thoughts and not get you paranoid you're about to get banned. Far as I could tell as long as you don't glaze terrorists, you're fine.

The state of the world is definitely not cool right now, and some people just wanna get their thoughts out to vent or cope.

I agree. I can't remember the last time I've been logging into GAF at least a half dozen times a day to check on a thread. It was a super helpful way to get curated info on a major ongoing world event, often faster (and less biased) than mainstream news sources.

Does GAF even have a way to threadban people? I can't recall ever seeing someone get threadbanned. Maybe that's the issue.

Surely admin can vibecode a threadban tool on Claude in an hour and re-open the thread! Pretty please!!!

When the conversations stop being about the subject and become classical (and neverending) mudslinging between the left and right then I don't see any point to a thread. Of course, some topics are naturally adjacent to that, but I think the mods/EviLore are good at discerning when a topic is losing steam and ending up with bickering.

I checked in on the thread before and was like "yeah, this will get locked soon."

Again, I didn't read the thread, and I'm not taking a side because I haven't even been following much + I'm not American, but a lot of the time through history one man's terrorist has been another man's freedom fighter. Maybe there really is one objectively correct truth here, I don't know, but if there is, then why even have a thread?

It seemed lol things would go off the rails a bit whenever it was a slow news day

I actually appreciated being able to have sane conversations on the subject and bought a couple members gold as support a couple days back lol,

hopefully it comes back with some guidelines, otherwise it was fun while it lasted. Never saw a poster go from "just asking questions" to anti-Semitic tropes to banned in minutes before. That was something.

Yes they do... I was thread banned lol

GAF should have a clear rule whether we want stuff related to politics or not, because various threads have been popping up lately. I say yes, you can always hide its visibility only to logged users with a minimum of one month activity.

Well it's an ongoing event... we should have a place to discuss such a thing. But I'm sure mods had a reason to close it. I didn't visit the thread all the time.

Anyway, $150 oil barrel tomorrow?

The memes were carrying that whole thread on their back. Absolute cinema.

Anyway, open the straight. Wait, I mean thread. Let's go.

Just wanna clarify in case if that came out wrong, before. My only opinion on the issue is that I pray for peace, always. So that's why I'm not taking sides, it's all just really sad to me.

and the only reason I'm posting in this thread is because it also makes me sad to see so many people banned lol.

That thread was often a hard read as tempers were flaring and people were sniping at each other. Lots of attacking the poster, and not the post. Some arguments weren't even made in good faith, especially since a poster enjoyed mocking others before they were banned.

All that chaos creates division and ill feeling in the GAF community, so it is good the troublemakers were banned and the thread is locked.

Yeah it's all good, I understood where you were coming from.

I think no politics on 95% of the site and like 1-2 mod approved politics thread sounded ok. I avoid it but if there's one or two ball pits for the ones that want it, it's there for them

So now the issue is China gets a bunch of their oil thru the strait. And instead of an Iranian blockade there's a US blockade...this one with no exceptions for "friends of Iran".
