Can you output 1080p to a 4k TV with a Nvidia card?

Looking for help. So I recently dug out my ps4 to play the Uncharted collection and was amazed at how good the games looked. What stood out most was how good 1080p looked on my Samsung 4k Oled.

So it got me thinking maybe I'll run some games at 1080p on PC so I can turn on pathtracing and crank the settings (I have 4070ti).

But 1080p on PC looks like blurry garbage on my tv 🧐

It's then I noticed that Nvidia scales 1080p to 4k before sending it to my tv. No matter what setting or resolution I set in control panel. I've set scaling to display with overide and everything else I can think of. My tv says the input coming from pc is 2160p no matter what resolution I set in control panel.

I just want to get a 1080p output so the tv does the scaling. On ps4 or any 1080p device I plug in to the tv looks super crisp and the tv does an amazing job of scaling the picture. But my pc in 1080p looks like blurry shit.

So does anyone have any ideas? Can anyone test 1080p on 4k tv and check if Nvidia outputs 1080p native. Is this a shady tactic by nvidia to make 1080p look like shit so we keep upgrading Grahics cards?

This sounds like a scaling issue maybe?

1080p scaled to the full size of my monitor (46' 4k) is going to look shit if I don't fiddle with custom scaling options.

Maybe this will help

Or dump your full specs (including model number of your display) into grok or gpt and they will walk you through the process

Sounds like a scaling issue, but at the same time if you're not at your TV's native res, it's always going to look blurrier; the best thing you can do is just set it at UHD, and then in-game scale it, either through DLSS, an option for screen percentage, or a resolution picker that supports borderless window.

If the PS4 could do it so can a PC.

More seriously, why don't you use DLSS or some other upscaling options (I know, they have an overhead when going to 4k, so not always ideal).

There are PC monitors that allow for clean 1080p even if they are 4K (they just resize the image using a nearest neighbor algorithm, it fits perfectly, so no bluryness... but most anything else will try to "help" by doing some kind of fancy math on the image).

Have you tried disabling the GPU scaling option? assuming you can still do it? It really shouldn't be that bad.

Tv model is Samsung S95B but I've had 4 or 5 4k tvs now and 1080p always looks so bad from pc. I just assumed 1080p looks bad/blurry on a 4k tv.

Its only after playing a ps4 which can only output a native 1080p that I thought hang on a minute this looks sharp and great.

I've tried every scaling option and spent hours reading the Internet but I can't output a native 1080p signal from my 4070ti. Nvidia uses scaling resolutions. if I check the tv info or use an app to read the resolution it's always 2160p.

Seems like everyone else thinks like I did, that 1080p looks blurry on a 4k screen but over the last few days I've come to the conclusion that you cannot output a 1080p signal from a modern nvidia gpu unless its plugged into a 1080p display.

Yeah obviously I've been using dlss and I've tried every scaling setting. I just believe outputting a native 1080p signal should be an option. like I said Ps4, my 1080p blurry player and roku stick all look great at 1080p.

It seems strange that this isn't an option. I'm gonna start seeing if CRU can do this but I'm scared of messing shit up lol

I've got a Samsung Q70 and a RTX 4070.
I can output 1080p.
I assume your game is set to Fullscreen mode.
Or set windows resolution to 4k then use borderless Fullscreen.

I remember having issues with windows and color modes with resolution.
RGB vs YUV and such.
Try going into Nvidia control panel in resolution and picking either Nvidia color or manually changing from RGB to YUV.

Sure does, my s90d shows 1080p@144hz when I change it here, I then go to source and pull up the info and it shows 1080p@144hz.

Thaks for the tip will defo try yuv settings. Yes I can set my resolution to 1080p but I pretty much guarantee if you check your tv info or use a third party app to read resolution then it will report 2160p/UHD.

There seems to be no way to output a native 1080p signal to let the tv do the scaling. Even if I set scaling to display.

Interesting. Are you in the pc or tv resolution section? Do you have a list of scaling resolutions at the top of that list like I do? Any chance you could post a pic of your tv info? I really want to get to the bottom of this 😆

check my edited first post above and yes I select PC not TV for resolutions.

if your Desktop resolution is set to 4K, and the game you run isn't running in a "true" Exclusive Full Screen mode, the GPU will upscale the resolution of the game to whatever your desktop resolution is.
so set your PC to 1080p if you want to use 1080p regularly.

if your output is set to 1080p and it looks blurry, it's due to your TV settings probably being different to your PS4's settings. try switching to game mode or PC mode (depending on which one it's currently on)

Brilliant cheers. Sorry to bother you but do you have a list of scaling resolutions at the top of the resolution list? I have and maybe these are being used instead. I have DSR off but anyone know how to disable scaling resolutions?

if you set it to integer scaling with these resolution settings, it should look perfectly sharp, right?
For some reason I don't have integer scaling. But I would just love to get a 1080p output like Guardian monkey above. For some reason I have a list of scaling resolutions that get used if I select any resolution that's not 2160p.

it should be in the marked menu (this shot is in german, as I'm not gonna change my desktop language just for a screenshot lol)

I have this. But when I select 1080p from pc resolutions it changes to scaling resolution 1920x1080p, PC (50%) thanks for the help. At least I know it's possible now. Do you have scaling resolutions listed?

No I don't have scaling resolutions listed, also you have 1920*1080 PC(50%), do you not have just 1920*1080 listed?

Yeah this is the problem I think. When I select 1920x1080 from pc section of resolutions it uses the 50% scaling instead. I have a list of scaling resolutions but I can't find any info on how to disable them. But Im getting close now lol

I believe it's image scaling setting that is somehow stuck to on. Gonna DDU drivers to see if that finaly fixes it. Then I can play in glorious 1080p😅
Thanks for the help.

Reinstalled the drivers and reset everything to default ....and it works😃. booted up cyberpunk.....and it looks like shit in 1080p😂😭😂😭. DLSS looks so much better 😂 thanks for all the help, sorry to waste your time 😂

I was wondering what your impressions would be as dlss is the better option, but you don't know until you try it. So I get why you went down that hole. :messenger_grinning:

On the plus side I think my drivers were broken. 60 fps with vrr @4k 120hz never felt smooth but playing Cyberpunk now with 4k dlss balanced and raytracing at 60fps ish no framgen feels silky smooth and is so much better than before 😃. thanks again for help 🤜

Default Nvidia driver setting is to use display scaling. In that case there shouldn't be any difference between PC GPU output and PS4 - which would also use display side scaling.
If you switch the GPU to GPU side scaling then you will probably get better scaling quality as the scalers in all modern Nvidia GPUs are fairly advanced.

However if you want to use 1080p resolution with 4K output you're much better off with either integer scaling option or using DLSS to upscale.

I think actually it is the PS4 that is upscaling the 1080p to 4K and the TV that sucks to upscale your PC output.

Usually it's the consumer who has to buy a good upscaler hardware for retro consoles since TV's internal upscalers (probably software based) always sucked. The manufacturer perspective is - very few people really use it so why make a more expensive TV.

You should be able to limit the PS4 output only to 1080 and lat the TV upscale it. I remember similar settings on my PS3 with 1080 TV. It was PS3 that made a better job upscaling.

Custom res ?

This I need to look into this. Cause man, on Xbox and ps and so. 1080p looks great and sharp. But on PC shit look garbage. I have to be 4k on pc. It doesn't makes sense.
Many modern TVs detect if it's a console or PC connected and apply different processing modes to them. My bet would be on something like that.

Sharpening filters have changed on some newer TVs and no longer cause haloing artifacts, for example. Those should be turned off in PC mode but might be turned on in console mode without people realizing it.

This is a launch ps4 and its not capable of a 4k output. PS4 definitly doing something to the image though as 1080p looks so much better on ps4 than Pc.

DLLS 4 performance is exactly what you're looking for [1080p to 4K upscale, but I believe 4070ti might even handle a native incredible looking DLAA at 60 fps] Image from ps4 will look like a bad joke in comparison.

Yes and no. Idk. Got my pc connected to my living room tv. It's only 3 years old (the tv). Everything works. Everything goes to game mode. Even switch ports that my ps5 was connected too. Lucky my pc can run everything 4k as of now. But it does worry me if newer games when I have to cut the res down to 1440p or 1080p. At first I was like, damn idk how I play 1080p games they look like shit now that I gotten use to 4k gaming. It was until I rebought ff7remake on pc. It was as pretty, if not more prettty then I remember it. Then I put it in 1080p for fun and it was such a blurry mess. Like there no way it was that bad. Went and borrow a friend ps4. Damn ps4 1080p of ff7 look so much cleaner and better. Don't believe it's the tv. Cause I cut all that shit off when I play games on it. So the consoles are doing something to help make it look nice at 1080p or less. Just hadn't figured out how to do that with my pc.

Could it be the cables? If your PS4 is kicking 1080p to your TV to upscale, but your PC tries to upscale and you are not using a 4k cable maybe that makes it blurry?

I noticed the same problem,PS4 and PS5 look great while PC and I noticed even Xbox Series S look like shit when set at 1080p on 4k screen but PC moreso. It's got to do with the PlayStation internal upscaling or something which is really good.

I have a fibre optic 4k hdmi. But it's all fixed now I just DDU and fresh install of drivers. Games are running smother than they ever have so I'd recommend doing this. I've just been updating drivers for 5 years 😂

A 1080p image can look amazing on a 4K display (comparable to 1080p on fullHD display), but the method I'm using only works in emulators.

Emulators allows me to use integer scaling instead of the default bilinear filtering, which produces a blurry image. Thanks to integer scaling, I can get razor-sharp pixels and that's necessary for the next step. If the image is upscaled correctly (razor sharp pixels) I can use shader mask in order to simulate fullhd screen. I'm using sony megatron CRT shader with TVL 1000 and thanks to it I get razor sharp 1080p upscaled image without pixelation. Sony CRT shader is a must, because without it upscaled 1080p will look sharp, but extremely pixelated (this shader removes pixelation).

This method only works with emulators because forced integer upscaling (through nvidia drivers) renders the game buffer at 1080p rather than 4K (native resolution of my display), so when I load Reshade I cant use 4K CRT mask (meaning I cant simulate 1000p display).

I wish there were a workaround for this problem with integer scaling. 1080p can look amazing when upscaled to 4K, but Nvidia drivers currently make it impossible to use this method for every game.
