Oh no, how will my awkwardly located community mailbox get filled with ads and flyers now?

I thought the whole point of the community mailboxes was to reduce time on routes? At least I think that was the justification for my having to walk an extra block to get my mail since last year.

I need to make a decision, what do you guys think:

1) Send my wedding invitations tomorrow morning (1.5 months earlier than I'm supposed to), risking some of them getting "trapped" at the Post Office for god knows how long

2) Hold off until the situation is resolved. If they aren't resolved by mid-August, I hand-deliver as many as possible and use UPS/Purolator/DHL to send the more distant ones.

I know, invitations are for suckers.

Ugh..when I track my item it's saying it's at a local sort facility. I wonder if I can just drive there and pick up my parcel instead of waiting and hoping they deliver by Thursday.

Guess what, Canada Post owns Purolator. So yeah. lol
Different union, they are open for business
Realistically this is going to go on for a few weeks before some sort of deal is struck or the government orders them back to work as an essential service or whatever. I have sympathy for the workers involved because the postal industry is going to go away slowly over time. They'll cut back on every day mail delivery, and eventually use the drones for packages.

$20-30 to send a fancy piece of paper? You are doubling down on the sucker game.

Just give people a call or do it electronically they will completely understand

I know, it's just that of course Canada Post would recommend Purolator.

I have a lot of sympathy for the workers but not a lot for the company itself. Their systems for parcel delivery and tracking are absolutely atrocious. It's so bad that Amazon actually has an entry on their FAQ saying that parcels from Canada Post marked as delivered may not actually be delivered -- and to wait 24h more for delivery.

Crazy. My TV is being shipped from amazon via Purolator, according to the tracking info. Don't know how good their track record is though; I haven't been shipped a package in years so I'm out of the loop.

Still saying there is very little chance (per my uninformed opinion) that this lasts longer than 3-4 weeks. No way that the government combined with the business pressure will let the country be without letter mail for more than a month, it's too important to a lot of things still.

Meanwhile UPS and Fedex are probably licking their chops ready to go

Ugh! I have an order shipping from Japan in a day or two, and the only mailing options are either Canada Post or DHL. DHL would be viable...if I didn't have to pay duties/taxes on everything! I can't extend the payment either, since the website I ordered from is liable to take actions on non-paid items. Well, that and I actually want those items.

I guess it's Canada Post and waiting until August to receive them. The only mail option is EMS too, meaning I'm paying all of that money for non of the speed. I can ship cheaper than that, due to the size/weight of the shipment. :(

*skims through the thread*

Wow. The USPS down here is actually pretty damn good in comparison. I've had very few problems with them.

Could impact a few things for me actually, not just game deliveries...Amazon has been sending me stuff UPS anyways.

I'm sorry but this is one of the slackest jobs, I just don't care if the whole thing closed up shop and courier's take over the entire business. So many of these guys get paid an 8 hour day and work half that. The only time they have to actually work the hours they get paid is around the holidays.

Well if they get paid well anyway than they're really lucky. In Poland it's one of the lowest paid jobs.

FYI, someone in my family is a manager at Canada Post and told me that most online retailers that use Canada Post to ship things (Amazon, Best Buy) have been notified to use Purolator for the time being, so online ordering should still be fine, although a little more annoying.

I know Amazon's already using Purolator, and now I get to wait for them to fail three delivery attempts before leaving me a slip for pickup. Need to call and just tell them to start leaving the slip after the first attempt.

If I'm not at home at 2 PM on the first weekday I'm not going to be home at 2 PM on the next two...

I have a cpu coming that's been stuck in postal hell for a while now. Expected delivery date is between July 2nd and 11th... fucksakes.

If it's coming by Canada Post then you can assume it will not arrive for quite some time. Strike Date looks to be the 2nd and given the 91-94% in favor, it's pretty much a lock.

If it's someone else...well, nothing but sympathy

How were you people not aware that this was coming? It's been telegraphed a few months out.

We made sure to get all our overseas orders done and to our door almost a month ago, got our last Amazon order in last week.

Bell is sending out emails saying due to the strike all bill payments must be made online. I ordered a bunch of clothes for the rest of the summer I'll be pissed if it doesn't arrive before hand because I certainly don't wanna go out and spend smother 200+ dollars.

Phoned the passport office this morning, they're not expecting the strike to go long but if it does they can courier to your local Service Canada office and you can pick up your passport there, phew.

This will likely be all summer if not longer.

Just wondering, where are you getting that impression from? I can't see this lasting more than a few weeks tops.

Just what I've picked up from various impressions of what's happening. They're incredibly far apart. I'm just not hopeful

But glad to hear it's not expected to go long. I'd be happy for my cynicism to be proven wrong.

Oh the joys of unions.
But then the socialist Canadian gaffers (which is probably 99% of Canadian gaf, are probably happy the union is stepping in and protecting their employees)

.

That's good to know. I still need to get an application in though so I think I'm screwed anyway.

This one is on Canada Post management.

Union asked for an extension on discussions. Management said no. Union apparently was considering rolling strikes which wouldn't stop service entirely. Canada Post is the one shutting service down fully as it's likely to be a lockout not a strike.

the union is basically like a paid service, and they are just doing what their service should be doing otherwise no one want to pay for it.

#2.

The Canadian postal service hasn't deviled mail directly to my door in over a year. Now we have designated postal boxes at the end of every street that people here have to travel to. They did this just to make things easier on postal service employees. Now they want to go on strike? The faster that they all get replaced by drones the better.

Actually they did this to cut back on employees and save money. It was the government's decision, not Canada Post. Did you not read about it over the past 2 years? It was a huge controversy that the Conservatives were doing it.

I really like Canada Post because they are the only ones who either deliver my packages correctly (without ditching as if "whoops you didn't provide the entry code/you weren't there"--LOOKING AT YOU UPS, FEDEX, AND OTHERS!!!! The bizzer/entry code was RIGHT ON THE ADDRESS SLIP!!!), or will conveniently drop it off at the nearest drug store post office instead of some out-of-the-way warehouse.

Hope this gets resolved quickly.

Yeah, UPS is the worst for this. I live on the 3rd floor of an apartment building and I honestly don't think I've ever seen a UPS guy in person. It's like they write up the "you were away" slip in the van before even going to the door, hit my buzzer, and then mach 4 it back to the van and screech out of the parking lot as fast as they can. And Purolator, I resorted to calling their receiving center and telling them to just hold my packages, since most of the time I end up having to go pick them up myself anyway.

Canada Post isn't fast, but they buzz me to me know they're here, enter the apartment building with a key (since they're delivering regular mail too), and will come to my door with the parcel. Usually I don't make them do that though and just come down and meet them at the mailboxes.

If you're in an apartment Canada Post is definitely the easiest.

If you live in a house in a safe area though? UPS and Canada Post will both leave packages, even huge ones, at your door which is super convenient. I went from dreading ordering anything online that wouldn't fit in my apartment mailbox to ordering all kinds of shit after moving to a house.

I always thought that when they go on strike they should only refuse to deliver anything to government-related offices and politician houses.

To me Canada Post is the best; they either leave the package here, or leave it at the nearby depot. Plus the girl who delivers stuff in the morning rushes to deliver me my packages before I leave for work, because she knows when I leave more or less.

All other services suck, UPS being the second-least worst because they have an office nearby where I can ask my packages to be left at, but it's often a hassle too.

Same, I ordered from walmart.ca last weekend for camping trip items, they used loomis! They only deliver during daytime hours during the week. They asked me $10 for a second delivery!

I wrote a big rent to walmart, never again.
