FuuuuuuuuuuThey were ordered back to work via Conservative legislation which has since been ruled unconstitutional.
The lockout is 100% happening. Canada Post has taken measures to make sure the lockout happens.
Different union, they are open for businessGuess what, Canada Post owns Purolator. So yeah. lol
I need to make a decision, what do you guys think:
1) Send my wedding invitations tomorrow morning (1.5 months earlier than I'm supposed to), risking some of them getting "trapped" at the Post Office for god knows how long
2) Hold off until the situation is resolved. If they aren't resolved by mid-August, I hand-deliver as many as possible and use UPS/Purolator/DHL to send the more distant ones.
I know, invitations are for suckers.
I know, it's just that of course Canada Post would recommend Purolator.Different union, they are open for business
Realistically this is going to go on for a few weeks before some sort of deal is struck or the government orders them back to work as an essential service or whatever. I have sympathy for the workers involved because the postal industry is going to go away slowly over time. They'll cut back on every day mail delivery, and eventually use the drones for packages.

I have a lot of sympathy for the workers but not a lot for the company itself. Their systems for parcel delivery and tracking are absolutely atrocious. It's so bad that Amazon actually has an entry on their FAQ saying that parcels from Canada Post marked as delivered may not actually be delivered -- and to wait 24h more for delivery.
I'm sorry but this is one of the slackest jobs, I just don't care if the whole thing closed up shop and courier's take over the entire business. So many of these guys get paid an 8 hour day and work half that. The only time they have to actually work the hours they get paid is around the holidays.
FYI, someone in my family is a manager at Canada Post and told me that most online retailers that use Canada Post to ship things (Amazon, Best Buy) have been notified to use Purolator for the time being, so online ordering should still be fine, although a little more annoying.
Purolator is the worst. The. WORST.
Fuck public sector unions. Sorry
I have a cpu coming that's been stuck in postal hell for a while now. Expected delivery date is between July 2nd and 11th... fucksakes.
It's almost a guarantee at this point

Phoned the passport office this morning, they're not expecting the strike to go long but if it does they can courier to your local Service Canada office and you can pick up your passport there, phew.
Just wondering, where are you getting that impression from? I can't see this lasting more than a few weeks tops.

Oh the joys of unions.
But then the socialist Canadian gaffers (which is probably 99% of Canadian gaf, are probably happy the union is stepping in and protecting their employees)

The Canadian postal service hasn't deviled mail directly to my door in over a year. Now we have designated postal boxes at the end of every street that people here have to travel to. They did this just to make things easier on postal service employees. Now they want to go on strike? The faster that they all get replaced by drones the better.
I really like Canada Post because they are the only ones who either deliver my packages correctly (without ditching as if "whoops you didn't provide the entry code/you weren't there"--LOOKING AT YOU UPS, FEDEX, AND OTHERS!!!! The bizzer/entry code was RIGHT ON THE ADDRESS SLIP!!!), or will conveniently drop it off at the nearest drug store post office instead of some out-of-the-way warehouse.
Hope this gets resolved quickly.
If you're in an apartment Canada Post is definitely the easiest.Yeah, UPS is the worst for this. I live on the 3rd floor of an apartment building and I honestly don't think I've ever seen a UPS guy in person. It's like they write up the "you were away" slip in the van before even going to the door, hit my buzzer, and then mach 4 it back to the van and screech out of the parking lot as fast as they can. And Purolator, I resorted to calling their receiving center and telling them to just hold my packages, since most of the time I end up having to go pick them up myself anyway.
Canada Post isn't fast, but they buzz me to me know they're here, enter the apartment building with a key (since they're delivering regular mail too), and will come to my door with the parcel. Usually I don't make them do that though and just come down and meet them at the mailboxes.
New deal proposed by workers, no strike extended until Wednesday

Love how GAF acts left wing but fucking loses it when a strike inconveniences them.
I always thought that when they go on strike they should only refuse to deliver anything to government-related offices and politician houses.
To me Canada Post is the best; they either leave the package here, or leave it at the nearby depot. Plus the girl who delivers stuff in the morning rushes to deliver me my packages before I leave for work, because she knows when I leave more or less.
All other services suck, UPS being the second-least worst because they have an office nearby where I can ask my packages to be left at, but it's often a hassle too.
