Both sides are starting to amp up the PR war.
CP said the union is being unreasonable about pension changes and says that's the key sticking point. Since many Canadians don't have a workplace pension I can see why they went with this, since it makes the union members look like a bunch of fatcats. I'm not sure how much the union really care about the pension changes, it seems reasonable to me (other than older employees being grandfathered into the old system, which is an awkward split) and something they could give up in negotiations for their other demands.
The union held a press conference where they're saying the key point of their negotiation is gender pay equality. It's not quite true but it is true that the suburban/rural workers that work under an awful deal for way less money than their urban counterparts are overwhelmingly women, so I can see why they took this route.
They then claimed CP upper management are a bunch of Harper-ites. Probably to embarrass the current government?
The government also announced they're staying out of it.
It sounds like the "lockout" is just going to be cutting down service to once or twice a week or something due to massively falling mail volume due to threat of work stoppage. This would not go well with the union and would likely push them to strike, which is the point, as that would make the union look worse to the general public.
I can see this going on for a while.
