Same, I ordered from walmart.ca last weekend for camping trip items, they used loomis! They only deliver during daytime hours during the week. They asked me $10 for a second delivery!

I wrote a big rent to walmart, never again.

Did they send an armored truck?

Oh the joys of unions.
But then the socialist Canadian gaffers (which is probably 99% of Canadian gaf, are probably happy the union is stepping in and protecting their employees)

Then pay more to have a courier for your shipping needs and put those evil union workers out of a job. Like Ether Snake said Canada post has a far more flexible pick up/delivery routine than UPS or FedEx does and costs less too. Someone on the radio today was losing at over stamp prices costing a couple bucks to send a postcard to Europe. You're mailing something half way across the fucking planet for the price of a Coke and somehow it's too much. And somehow someone else will magically do it cheaper.

The one thing I'm always afraid of when shopping online is "Is it going to be delivered by something else than Canada Post? Please no.".

Canada Post gave a 72 hour lockout notice so unless they find a deal before then there will probably be a lockout Friday.

It also seems very unlikely they'll come to an agreement before then. CP gave a proposal on the 25th, CUPW responded on the 1st, and now CP is saying the 25th proposal is their final offer. They're very far apart on a lot of terms.

On my birthday :/
Welp looks like I'm not getting that gift my friend sent me.

Crap. Because of this strike I wanted to hold off on buying those hd retrovision genesis cables. But I knew they were limited and I was right - they sold out minutes after I ordered mine. Oh well, I waited a year for them to go on sale, I can wait a little longer I guess. No way will they make it here from the US before Friday.

So I don't remember how crown corporations work - is the government of Canada involved in these negotiations, or does CP act independently in trying to negotiate with the union?

My guess is CP does the negotiating, but as a crown business the government can ensure they do the once-monthly delivery of important things (money for retirees, etc)

Hope the workers get a fair deal, can't blame them for fighting especially when their jobs are being made obsolete as the years pass. Postal strike/lockout is sort of a losing proposition for all involved though, since all the online stores (which is the profitable part of Canada Post) will just shift to Purolator (which is a subsidiary) or UPS/Fedex.

Oh well, I'm happy at least that I'll still be getting my stuff

Both sides are starting to amp up the PR war.

CP said the union is being unreasonable about pension changes and says that's the key sticking point. Since many Canadians don't have a workplace pension I can see why they went with this, since it makes the union members look like a bunch of fatcats. I'm not sure how much the union really care about the pension changes, it seems reasonable to me (other than older employees being grandfathered into the old system, which is an awkward split) and something they could give up in negotiations for their other demands.

The union held a press conference where they're saying the key point of their negotiation is gender pay equality. It's not quite true but it is true that the suburban/rural workers that work under an awful deal for way less money than their urban counterparts are overwhelmingly women, so I can see why they took this route.

They then claimed CP upper management are a bunch of Harper-ites. Probably to embarrass the current government?

The government also announced they're staying out of it.

It sounds like the "lockout" is just going to be cutting down service to once or twice a week or something due to massively falling mail volume due to threat of work stoppage. This would not go well with the union and would likely push them to strike, which is the point, as that would make the union look worse to the general public.

I can see this going on for a while.

I got my brother things here in Japan and I'd be sending it to him via EMS. But iirc the delivery when done back home is done by Canada Post. Should I send it now or wait for this strike to clear up?

IDK, people in this thread seem to think it will be long, but these extensions make it seem like they are working on it.

Yeah it is Canada Post on this side.

EMS from Japan to Canada is pretty quick. Usually when we send stuff on Tuesday it arrives by Friday. If you sent it now, if they extend again, it might make it, but you'd be risking it being stuck who knows where for a month or more.

Couldn't you use kuroneko or something else? It might end up being Purolator or DHL on this end but it's probably better than getting stuck.

I think you mean July ;)

The push backs make me think this is closer to being resolved than actually turning to shit. Or they are just making sure all the pension plan under other cheques get out for the start of the month.

People need to get direct deposit.

It's confusing as Fedex ground and DHL downgrade through Canadapost once in Canada. IDK if they would upgrade in the reverse scenario

Frickin Purolator has my package on the truck and can't deliver it 4 days straight now. I ask to pick it up and they say they are too busy. WTF

FedEx Ground only downgrades to Canada Post if it's a location they don't deliver to.

Toronto?

Imported the David Cronenberg Collection (Rabid/Shivers/Dead Zone) on blu-ray from Australia and it has yet to arrive. Was dispatched on June 9th and international shipping is supposed to take up to 28 days.

I've got a bad feeling about this.

If you have a parcel and it's in Canada Post distribution center when the strike occur, it might be send out to you under a third party courier as Canada Post can't legally hold the parcel for a long period of time. Just, it will take longer to get to you. Just a small head up from what I heard on my side.

Right now, this mix message is causing issue for me as I have to ship out many parcel to customer and Canada Post is our main shipping company we use. We do have a secondary back up but it's under UPS which mean the parcel shipping will be double. Sigh...have to contact customer the entire day to confirm if they want to ship under UPS and pay or just send under Canada Post and pray the strike didn't happen or it's very short.

I just hope they don't strike at all. Do understand they issue and very neutral with Canada Post for the most part (except for few incidents when sending parcel to them). Still, prepared for the worst.

Has amazon.ca been using Purolator due to the job action talk swirling around? In August, two packages from amazon.ca came by Purolator. I don't know if this was in anticipation of a strike, or if it was just luck that I've managed to avoid having Purolator as a carrier until now.

Purolator depot is a PITA for me to get to in a reasonable amount of time. I'd basically have to take a half day off work, and would rather it just get sent back undeliverable than book time off for it. The only carrier more annoying for me is FedEx.

I'm thinking of just cancelling all my amazon preorders if there is no way of knowing/guaranteeing that they will come by Canada Post or UPS so I can pick them up close by. Unless someone knows of a way to select a carrier on Amazon orders? I don't care if I have to pay more, or even if it takes longer.

They started using purolator more frequently due to the possibility of the strike but occasionally did beforehand as well.

If you're in a house, fill out an SNR and attach it to your door.

If only - unfortunately I live in an apartment building in a high foot-traffic area, and they typically can't get in to the foyer. They don't try more than once, either. Maybe that's due to heavy volumes right now, but the first time it happened I was actually home all day and then came out in the afternoon to see that notice stuck to the building door telling me to go pick it up next day.

Yep, that's pretty normal. Online deliveries are just awful in an apartment scenario with anything but Canada Post. Unless you have a doorman I guess.

Was actually the best thing about moving to a house, just drop that shit on my porch.

Well...this is good news for me at work as I don't have to start calling customer about charging them more to ship out parcel to them if we change to UPS. Also, great news right now as I don't want too many people using UPS right now as we're in the process to sending quite a bit of stuff to Amazon.

Also, now the strike is avert, Amazon will most likely use Canada Post which is still the cheapest choice of shipping right now. Don't have too many bad experience with them and hope I don't need to worry about this till the next time they need to renewed the contract.
