Canadian elite Special Forces Sniper makes world record-breaking kill shot in Iraq

I wonder if he apologised after
I don't know, but the SOP is to shout "Sorry!" at your target before you fire. I hope they get that detail correct.
You can if you want: it's a supersonic cartridge, so the bullet will arrive before the apology.
lol
Slightly disappointed it didn't involve some sort of deliberate Moose ricochet.
bob lee swagger am cry, netflix probably gonna do season 2 with a canadian dude now
Canadian threads are always the best. No jokes yet about Canadians having top sniper records because they're too scared to fight up close? Tisk.

Anyone remember how far was the shot you fired at Imran Zakhayev in the first Modern Warfare game? That shit taught me first-hand the effect of wind and curvature in sniping.

In the distance before the shot hit you could hear "soooooreeeeeee"

And this is going to sound callous, but I would much rather a sniper taking out key targets than a drone strike, or a moab for political dick waving.

Quiet efficient and targeted is how I expect military to act in a war situation.

It's a fair point. Imagine if the roles were reversed and all across the Arab peninsula people were saying 'man, what a great shot.' It'd leave a bad taste in our mouths. I know it's not a completely 1:1 comparison (because nobody likes IS) but I'm still not a fan either.

It's not "not a completely 1:1 comparison."

It's literally nothing remotely like that.

what we need are sniper drones.

Man, when you start factoring for the Coriolis Effect to line up a shot you're honestly closer to rocket science than conventional marksmanship.

It's like the Cracked.com article points out: snipers pretty much weaponize math!

EDIT: Also, no one has mentioned that humidity is also taken into account

I don't thing that is how it works. That is like saying athletes should be thanking equipment manufacturers for their skills. Like putting on a pair of Jordan's makes me a baller. Nope.

It's not really like that either, there's a reason that gun costs $6,000 and that scope is $3,000. Equipment still plays a large part.

The biggest enemy at that range is still wind, and any small gust or change of wind over that 10 seconds can make the shot miss. It doesn't matter if you are the best in the world, it's still a pretty low percentage shot. (Like a full court shot from Steph Curry)

I imagine the victim was talking or listening to someone. If the bullet hit the head while they were talking, that must have been quite a scene.

But just over 2 miles away? How did the sniper escape unseen? How long is 2 miles compared to stories on a building?

Edit: Nevermind looked it up

Do snipers actually do calculations for the curvature of the earth or do they just instinctively have a sense of how they need to aim based on thousands of hours of experience? Also, I wonder if this was a one and done or if he was taking multiple shots at targets in the same area and this one just happened to land.
I recommend reading the book Jarhead. It's about, among other things, the relationship of the sniper/scout.

I'm in awe of the ability to kill a "bad hombre" from so far away and yet saddened that we're still in a perpetual state of war.

How this guy isn't known more as a Canadian icon is flabbergasting. I bet Canadians have heard of the Red Baron or Vasily Zaitsev or Chris Kyle but have no clue who this is.
I only learned about him recently as I've been working through the CBC 150 year celebration mini series.

I don't recall learning about this stuff in school.

We hear (and see) nothing of JTF2 for like a decade, and then they pop up with this. Truly the tip (US SOF speak incredibly highly of JTF2 -- even in Task Forces under American control the general would defer to them for direct action missions).

relatively are pretty kingly for the same of our army

"Despite its relatively small army, Canada has a recognized penchant to turn out uncannily good shooters.

One of history’s deadliest snipers is Francis Pegahmagabow, an Ontario Ojibwa who killed 378 Germans during the First World War.
Joseph Boyden's Three Day Road is a great novel sort of based on his life.

The Canadians doing it right. Instead of just dropping a bomb that would kill civilians, they took the chance to show restraint and skill. This is far more effective in stopping terrorism than dropping bombs on innocent people, in the hope you get the right one.

This is absolutely incomprehensible. What a sniper guy. All those variables to take into account..

Head blown..

Insane shot. That would be like standing on top of my apartment building and shooting someone at the art museum that takes 10 minutes for me to drive to.

🇺🇸 USA are you even trying? 🇺🇸

We've got some effective drone strikes in the past where the shooter was thousands of miles away from the target.
So technically, the US stays winning.

If you read the description of the previous record before this shot (Craig Harrison), they took nine shots just to find the range.

I remember when the British guy had the "record". Accuracy International (I think) had made the rifle and sales went through the roof.

Creepily morbid.

Who would even authorize this? I imagine the conversation went something like this:

Sniper: I'm gonna take the shot.
CO: Are you crazy? You're 3 clicks away.
Sniper: So's your mom!
CO: ...what?
