Canadian elite Special Forces Sniper makes world record-breaking kill shot in Iraq

...hate me...
It is seriously impressive to even hit somewhere around where he wanted to, at that distance.

That being said, there's obviously a bit of chance involved when we're talking about 10 seconds to land. Target could have moved anywhere, hell maybe it even moved by "luck" a little bit towards exactly where the round was going to hit.

Can hardly fathom a 3.5km distance though. Wow. That's a bit more far than I go to get my groceries when I don't mind going to the farthest supermarket. And I still take about 10 minutes with a car.

Would love to se a first person illustration/photo of how 3.5km away looks like.

I'd really love to see a "screenshot" of the crosshair right as he fired. Like, where the fuck would he have to actually aim relative to his target to make that kind of shot?

On the target or close to it. Sniper scopes usually have adjustment clicks. Shorter range shots sometimes use markings below the center dot.

Just wait until lasers are in the field for sniper use. They'll have to set up a second category for that. And any old fool will be able to hit a guy from 9 miles out.

Pretty amazing, especially from a country that is routinely mocked for needing the USA to protect it. Canada has a small military but what military it has is some of the best in the world...not only for sniping

5 pages in and no one's caught on to the unit the former Canadian record holder belonged to.

I'm impressed.

What's the joke? Princess Patricia's?

I did just read this tho on his wiki:

After leaving the Canadian Army, Furlong moved to Edmonton, Alberta and joined the Edmonton Police Service in 2004. In 2012, Furlong was dismissed from the police for discreditable conduct, after an episode in which he physically abused and urinated on a fellow police officer

Princess Patricia --> Pee Pee.

I wonder if these dudes are just always making crazy attempts at the record and we only hear about it when it works out.

Like, this shot clearly wasn't conventional practice when buddy decided to attempt it. Was his whole unit like "oh shit he's going for the record again, fingers crossed guys!"

Will we see homing bullets anytime in the near future? That would totally change how we fight wars.
DARPA is already on it

DARPA’s Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordnance (EXACTO) program, which developed a self-steering bullet to increase hit rates for difficult, long-distance shots, completed in February its most successful round of live-fire tests to date. An experienced shooter using the technology demonstration system repeatedly hit moving and evading targets. Additionally, a novice shooter using the system for the first time hit a moving target.

This video shows EXACTO rounds maneuvering in flight to hit targets that are moving and accelerating. EXACTO’s specially designed ammunition and real-time optical guidance system help track and direct projectiles to their targets by compensating for weather, wind, target movement and other factors that can impede successful hits.

“True to DARPA’s mission, EXACTO has demonstrated what was once thought impossible: the continuous guidance of a small-caliber bullet to target,” said Jerome Dunn, DARPA program manager. “This live-fire demonstration from a standard rifle showed that EXACTO is able to hit moving and evading targets with extreme accuracy at sniper ranges unachievable with traditional rounds. Fitting EXACTO’s guidance capabilities into a small .50-caliber size is a major breakthrough and opens the door to what could be possible in future guided projectiles across all calibers.”

The EXACTO program developed new approaches and advanced capabilities to improve the range and accuracy of sniper systems beyond the current state of the art. The program sought to improve sniper effectiveness and enhance troop safety by allowing greater shooter standoff range and reduction in target engagement timelines.
