Canadian elite Special Forces Sniper makes world record-breaking kill shot in Iraq

I think they do. I think they also have to take into account temperature and wind too.

Distance, bullet drop, speed loss, temperature, wind direction and speed, breathing, heartbeat, leading the target.

My longest on target shot was 750 meters with a scoped 338 after several shots on a static target, I can't imagine 3k. Just nuts.

I realized I'm probably overthinking the complexity because I'm sure they memorize the pre-determined equations or have some kind of automated tool where you just plug in your variables and get the necessary adjustments. But the sheer number of different factors that would impact the shot in those conditions seems like it would be very hard to account for when combined all together.

I'm pretty sure our snipers don't even have spotters and are on the field alone.
Nah they definitely have spotters... It would be operationally pretty risky to even take a shot at that distance with a spotter, let alone without one. I guess I'm not sure about this shot and JTF2, but the two earlier records by 3rd Battalion LI both had spotters.

One of history’s deadliest snipers is Francis Pegahmagabow, an Ontario Ojibwa who killed 378 Germans during the First World War.
How this guy isn't known more as a Canadian icon is flabbergasting. I bet Canadians have heard of the Red Baron or Vasily Zaitsev or Chris Kyle but have no clue who this is.

The gun manufacturer should get half the credit too. Did China make the gun?
I don't thing that is how it works. That is like saying athletes should be thanking equipment manufacturers for their skills. Like putting on a pair of Jordan's makes me a baller. Nope.

I have three secondary school buddies in JTF2. I don't speak to them regularly anymore but I know one was supposedly their best ever in various training exercises etc. They've been in for a while, we're over 30. One was a very very close friend growing up.

And he and another were sniper trained. Makes me wonder. I need to reach out. Not that I could post about it anyway, but it's interesting. Good childhood friends. Attended a large wedding with a lot of these JTF2 guys. Tons of fun. Their lives are so intense, they certainly know how to unwind and party =)

Good shit Canada, good shit.

Probably a WW1 thing.... Stuck in a trench for months plinking Germans at 200m every time someone stuck their head up.

If it was in WW2 as they marched across France there'd probably be a movie about it.

You still have to do a lot of calculations in your head.

I'm not super stoked about Canadian snipers operating in Iraq. Officially, we shouldn't be performing military operations there. Stuff like training and intelligence gathering, okay, maybe, I guess, but shooting people that haven't engaged Canadian personnel? Ehhhh...

Aimbot IRL. GG.

Seriously though, that's just nuts. I live about 1 KM away from the Namao army base in Edmonton. Glad to have these guys protecting us.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Duke Togo is unimpressed. That's practice on a Tuesday afternoon.

That's stupid impressive

Insane to think the target is stationary for "under 10 seconds" for the kill shot. Is he shooting a sitting target or enemy sniper in position? The mind wonders.

Also take that flat-earthers. *shower thought - sniper application form/recruitment has gotta ask about being a flat-earther, right?

That's an amazing shot. How do you even reliably practice for something like this? There are so many variables at that distance that I don't know how you would get much consistency.

I hope the news didn't report enough identifying information on the shooter, for the shooter's safety. Even naming the previous record holders seems iffy to me.

When I was in high school I got into a huge argument with my social circle because one of my friends said that snipers could shoot people 10 miles away and I said that wasn't possible and we didn't have the internet to be able to find out the answer.

I guess I'll be making some phone calls and enjoying the apologies tomorrow.

Ten miles is proper absurd unless you're "sniping" with artillery, yeah.

So it took about 10 seconds to hit. What could you do in that time? You could...

Shoot
Lay down gun
Scratch nose
Take a drink of powerade. Probably put cap on.
Pick up binoculars and watch your bullet hit

This won't mean much to anyone who doesn't live where I do, but I thought it would be interesting to look at google maps for my town. This guy landed a hit far away enough to go from one end of the city I live in to the complete opposite end of town. That is absolutely insane. I suggest others give this a try in google maps for your town, just to give yourself an idea of how far this shot is. I couldn't quite wrap my head around until I looked:

Oh wow!! Killed another human being at 3450m range. l33t H4xor. World record!!!

Yeah, it was a bad guy but this story rubs me the wrong way. Stop glorifying killings.

“The shot in question actually disrupted a Daesh [Islamic State] attack on Iraqi security forces,” said a military source, who stressed the operation fell within the strictures of the government’s advise and assist mission. “Instead of dropping a bomb that could potentially kill civilians in the area, it is a very precise application of force and because it was so far way, the bad guys didn’t have a clue what was happening.”

best part honestly
