Canadian General Election (OT) - #elxn42: October 19, 2015

What do you do with those shitty ads that talk about how the Government of Canada is awesome though? Those were basically campaign ads without being campaign ads. lol

True. Since the Liberals have pledged to ban political ads, I'm wondering how they'll handle government advertising. Maybe they just stop it entirely? It's what helped drive the sponsorship scandal, after all -- getting rid of it would close that potential avenue for abuse. I'm also not sure how the SCC would handle such a law; they upheld the limited third party advertising ban, so they may not see an issue with no political parties being allowed to advertise either, but yeah...I don't know where government ads fit in.

CANADA ACTION PLAN. PUTTING CANADIANS TO WORK. CANADA ACTION PLAN. CANADA ACTION PLAN. CANADA ACTION PLAN.
Oh god. :(

I also remember the controversy when they switched everything to blue. They weren't very subtle were they? lol

I'm sure there are legitimate cases where you want to advertise some program that the government is putting forward though. It's just so rife for abuse.

Not everyone has the patience and will power to go to the gym to get better.

Also, where are you going to get the funding to give 40 million Canadians equipment/gyms/gym memberships?

We'll just put higher taxes on those earning 200K and over...

*Looks at ksharps' bank account and rubs hands menacingly*

Kidding, I agree with your first sentence

CBC has the youtube livestream starting at 4:30 EST as well, in case anyone wants to watch from there.

How are they going to fill like 5 hours of air time? Too bad the Jays game isn't earlier, because then they could have done a commentary track over that. :p

Voted for David McGuinty (Liberal). Let's go Canada!
I'm surprised that last name isn't tainted. lol
Then again, I guess you can't blame a man for his brother's sins.

I'm going to try to get out of work early to go vote. They're legally supposed to allow me so hopefully my manager doesn't try to prevent me.

Thankfully NDP is stronger in my area so I'll be voting for them. I want Harper out.

40 million? His post was talking about people who get a note from a doctor for weight loss, so I imagine people who are obese, which I don't think is 115%ish percent of Canadians. We're not so fat that some people are counted in the census twice.

Maybe we could just build cities that discourage driving and encourage active transport (walking + biking) as part of everyday life instead of trying to subsidize gross gyms.

Yep do this.

Simple zoning changes would also help. I live in a 6 floor building with two elevators. There are stairs but they are fire escapes on the far edges of the building that are annoying to use. If stairways were front and center people would use the stairs more.

2 1/2 hours you mean. According to Elections Canada, poll results starts at 7 PM EST.

And like always, lots of guest speakers, comments, replays and speculation.

Government assisted weight loss would be my angle for people who want help.

Equipment and gym memberships can be expensive and offputting but the cost upfront of getting a person healthy would pay off in the long term. You'd have to have it doctor ensured somehow but... seems like something we should look at.

Hopefully this model works out and gets copied by other gyms accross Canada

I pay $10 a month

Yeah, but the first hour or so is always "we're just waiting for more results to come in, let's talk about what could happen in Quebec/Ontario for another hour because we have nothing else to talk about" fluff. lol

Best way to handle government advertising is just to have an ombudsman's office review ad content to make sure the primary purpose of the ad is to draw attention to a relevant program or government interest rather than assign partisan credit. It's ridiculous that it's come to this, but that's money well spent imho.

Given what we know about how Canada's New Government The Harper Government also deliberately avoided the use of the colour red in favour of blue and green on a lot of its advertising (because people associate red with the Liberals, like the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Multiculturalism, Official Bilingualism, and most of our best policy achievements), this is probably going to involve scrutiny of design choices as well as content.

Frankly I just don't think the Government should be allowed to mandate ads. Give the relevant department an advertising budget and let the civil servants figure out what needs to be advertised.

One easy solution - all government ads have to be in black and white.
(Alternatively, ban red, blue, green and orange.)

Apparently one of Tommy Douglas' big regrets was not covering dental in public health care.

Considering that poor teeth is responsible for many chronic illnesses that end up costing the system more money, it's short sighted that they aren't working on it.

Then again, you can't even get an eye exam in Ontario without paying now, so everyone is trying to cut corners with healthcare obligations.

Eye exams in Ontario are covered for certain exceptions. I don't have to pay for mine because I was born with Glaucoma in one eye.

Just so you are clear in the rule:

if the polls are open 7-7 and you work 9-5, they either need to let you come in at 10, leave at 4, or have 3 hours in the middle of your day.

If you have 3 contiguous hours of free time while the polls are open, your manager doesn't need to give you time off (ie you start at 10am)

This is the first time I've seen a sign from a smaller party... probably ever.

There's a sign for the communist party outside the Timmies by my work. :)

Wasn't going to vote, but I went and did it. The Liberal candidate seemed like a nice lady, so there it is. Sighhhh ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'd love more walkable cities. Government would need to play a more active hand in planning unit layout and size, increase noise attenuation standards, and start building more parks and playing fields downtown. More and more urban Canadians are probably ready to raise families in dense neighbourhoods if there were places for kids to play and dogs to run.

As it stands the modes of transportation to get the five kilometers to work rated fastest to slowest are bike, then drive, and then walk=streetcar.

Andrew Coyne resigned from his editorial position at the National Post because the paper didn't want him to write a column dissenting from their CPC endorsement . He's saying he's voting NDP. Never thought I would see this.

Damn @ Stump post <3

Just voted NDP a few hours ago. Was in and out of the building in about 3 minutes probably, and was the only voter in there though it was 2:00 in the afternoon.

I have a bottle of red wine. Tonight I will either be drinking in celebration or to forget.

Any good sites for election maps and things of that nature? I think I used CBC last time.

I took some economics classes in undergrad and learned it's best to invest and stimulate the economy when interest rates from the Bank of Canada are low, and these rates will likely stay low until 2016. Of course it depends on what the US Federal Reserve and Bank of England decide to do since our economies are so linked with those countries.

Lets hope its celebration... if regret I may wind up on the news for breaking the world record for alcohol poisoning
:p

Fuck now I'm worried about the risk of a coalition government if its a Liberal minority.

Coalition between who, though? ;)

Actually, Thomson finally walked back his comments from this morning -- he explained that he meant to say an NDP-led minority government would accept support from the Liberals or Conservatives, not that the NDP would support either of those parties.

For a supposed seasoned politician, Thomson sure is prone to nonsensical gaffes.
