And yet, still much better than TSN's coverage.

Agreed, it is so much better on CBC.

The old hockey players TSN have as a part of their panel now are terrible. The only thing good is Bob McKenzie, and you get everything he says on-air a moment later on his Twitter feed.

And that song, dear lord, that AWFUL song is gone! Thankfully this is the last year we have to hear that garbage.
YEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS. Thank goodness. Got sick of it towards the end of Vancouver. Already sick of it now.

Feeling mixed on this.

CTV has several channels at their disposal + streaming for the Olympics, and I've sorta liked some of what they've sort of done so far (I mean, most of the events I watch aren't even commentated on, so that's nice). But I miss CBC doing it, and they're a public broadcaster, which is a good thing since Bell/Rogers won't have their hands touching it. But like someone else said, CBC's recent Olympics coverage (Beijing, especially) wasn't that great. My dad said he doesn't like CTV's coverage much this year compared to Vancouver, though.

But as long as there's streaming, I'm good.

I don't think Brian Williams will go back to the CBC after what happened (unless they offer a lot of money). It's going to be really weird without him if he doesn't go back.

I really wouldn't mind seeing those four networks come together and do a mega-coverage of the Olympics. It would pretty much cover everything from basic cable to Satellite, HD and SD. Altogether, that's more than 10 different channels that could air the Olympics.
This would certainly be preferred, but I don't see it happening, heh.

And that's saying something.

The NHL on TSN panel is fine for the most part, but the actual hockey broadcast is pretty meh.

I can't stand most of the hockey panel on TSN and Sportsnet

I also can't stand Don Cherry

But I do like Satellite Hotstove........maybe because its only on once a week unlike seeing McLean, Kypreos, Dreger, etc... 5 times a day on the other channels

Honestly though, unless you work for CBC, or have rose-tinted glasses about their coverage, nobody should be happy about this. In fact, I'm shocked at how pro-CBC this thread has been.

1. We don't get CTV in Seattle, but we do get CBC.
2. CBC shows everything live. NBC doesn't.

I'm fucking stoked. But I'm American, so I know what I want doesn't really matter much concerning this.

Maybe I do have rose tinted glasses from watching the 2008 Olympics beside my dying father but this was by far the best news I have had all week with respect to Canada and the games. I believe in a strong national public broadcaster so I hope this is momentum towards sealing a future NHL deal as well, which should help keep CBC strong despite all the cuts in recent years.

Ahh, yes, I can see how it benefits Americans in that sense. As a Canadian, I'm not saying that CTV is the be-all-end-all or anything, but their coverage has absolutely wiped the floor with CBC's over the past 2 Olympics. CBC's last games, Beijing......well, I'd barely even refer to that as "coverage".

But since CBC is apparently gonna work with TSN on this, which may get them to three channels (CBC/TSN/TSN2) like CTV is right now (CTV/SN/TSN), I'll just wait and see, I guess.

The biggest issue with the next game is that Sochi as 8 hours ahead of eastern time. Ugh. Dat gold medal hockey game at 10am :lol

I saw a bit of CTV's coverage when I was in Vancouver over the weekend, seemed pretty good and not as biased toward Canadian athletes as CBC is. They also appeared to use some NBC coverage, which I found intersting.

Based on eastern time:

Sochi 2014 - 8 hours ahead of us
Rio 2016 - 1 hour ahead of us

Of course it would be the summer games we get a better time alignment with :/

This is not a good thing. CBC did a crap job covering the olympics before, and since then their budget has been cut to shreds. I don't see how they can possibly match the coverage of CTV/TSN/TSN2/RDS/SNET/OLN.

I think you should at least give CBC the benefit of the doubt. It has been 4 years since they last broadcast the Olympics and the consumption of media has changed a lot since then. It does worry me that there is only one CBC channel in HD right now,(on satellite anyways) but I think they'll be up to par by Sochi. CBC seems to be at a point right now where they have to make what they have work, so I'm sure they'll put a lot of effort into their coverage.
