CDPR officially apologises for hiding the console versions and promises quick updates and refund option

every AAA game launch cycle:

1) game is released in buggy state or under-delivers what was promised
2) fans outraged and swear to never buy another game from such company again.
3) game dev/publisher "apologizes" and "promises" to fix bugs and "listen" to feedback.
4) gullible fans eat it up and preorders whatever new game is announced
5) rinse and repeat

Not every AAA...look at Breath of the Wild, God of War, TLOU 2, Doom, etc...

There are tons of AAA games delivered at should be.

The problem are lazy money whore developers like Bethesda and now CDPR that hide the true because hype means money. The cycle you describe its their religion and thier followers always eat the crap they produce.

I don't agree with this.

If they can get RDR2 and GTAV running on last-gen, they can do CP2077. The issues those consoles have are simply due to complete lack of care and optimization, and a complete mis-read from top management to just release the game.
I disagree with this. And it's not to make excuses or to say that they couldn't have made a game that looked good on last-gen, but it isn't just about whether the game is "pretty."

RDR2 is a game designed to the strengths and limitations of what the console can do. Optimization isn't a binary thing, it's a game optimized for the platform it's running on. And Cyberpunk was just not. This isn't just about code, it's about how scenes are lit, where objects in the world are placed, how lighting is baked, how assets are built...

Cyberpunk, perhaps foolishly, spent years in development before they ever started the console ports. They said instead of building for the lowest common denominator they'd aim for the highest and then scale down, and it turns out the reason no one does that is because it doesn't really work very well.

You can't just dial down the settings and expect the game to scale perfectly to console, the fact is the game is very CPU heavy and the last gen consoles have dinky CPUs, it streams data in faster than the slow ass hard-drives of the base consoles can load...

Again, not making excuses, but this isn't just a matter of sloppy code. To really deliver a good version they're gonna have to find smart ways to pare things back beyond just dropping rendering effects and resolution.

good on them but the salty little kids have made their minds up.

i've been enjoying the game since day 1. the game looks amazing and runs smoothly for me on PC. if they are gonna make it better then shiiit i'm happy with that. while they work on these patches i'll be busy enjoying the game.

maybe look at yourselves if you're so mad. sure CDPR could've handled this better but a lot of the blame still goes to the people stupid enough to preorder.

Super funny that people are making excuses for them not being able to get a game DEVELOPED FOR last gen consoles running properly on last gen consoles.

I think some important perspective: Up to this point CDPR's biggest controversy was the fact that they showed of Witcher 3 with graphics far beyond what the released version could do. And part of that was probably because of the desire to ship day and date on consoles. It's the same thing that happened to Watch Dogs.

So I think this time around they tried to do the opposite, over-deliver on graphics, and make a flagship PC title. Other than the nVidia partner stuff, pre-release materials of the game were actually mostly on more modest settings, no RT, and then they ship the game and it looks even prettier!

Except they also made a game that cannot run on console without a shit load more work than they're able to get done in time. Total self-pwn.

Because it wasn't developed for last gen. It clearly just wasn't. It should have been. They promised it would be. But they made a Crysis-style PC showcase instead.

And you know, Crysis came to PS3, you can port down like that if you out the work in, but it's not as simple as just tweaking the config to fit the performance profile, and it's harder still with an open world game where you can't do as much bespoke optimization to smooth out rough points.

I think we all just need to call the CP launch a "soft delay". That's when a game should probably be delayed again, but you don't want to miss Xmas so you ship the game while working on bug fix patches.

Agree it was not developed for last gen but marketed on consoles as main target. They are not noobs like Hello Games that fell in the hype train, they knew what was happening they deserve all the critics now.

They lied, set embargos , basically knew this will happen and their apology plus refunds is just part of the plan. It is calculated they a bussiness not a group of guys developing on a small house while esting pizza and seleeping in the couch.

Cyberpunk was first announced in May 2012 with a teaser trailer released the next year in January 2013.
PS4 was launched in November 2013.

They had all this time to get this game sorted on PS4 and Xbox One.

They likely had this game developed with PC in mind first and foremost but what the fuck have they then been doing all this time with the console versions and why announce they are developing the game for PS4 and Xbox One If they knew the hardware couldn't handle it.

Its all good to release on PC. Seems like PC have a few problems but not as bad as console versions. Should have just stopped development on console if the game was not going to fulfill their vision.
However I think they became greedy and released on console anyways because of the huge install base so as to not miss out on the the $$$ to be made.

Then they had the audacity to boast about 8 million pre-orders when the game looks and plays like dogshit on anything but base last gen consoles. 'Apologies' and 'Sorry' is not going to fix that shit.
It just makes them look more scummy because they knew what they were putting out.

EDIT: Sony better give me my fucking money back. I'm done with this pile of shit game.

CP2077 really should have been an April 2021 release. Review scores would be higher, there wouldn't be much competition from other games, and it would not have received the backlash it has.
GTAV came out on 360/PS3 mate

Hey guys, thanks for the 8 million pre-orders. Oh and sorry we lied, wanna wipe your tears in this EuroDollar bill, while you wait months untill we fix our shit?

Its the right thing to say but dosent excuse the way they handled this game launch.

You guys are playing the Switch version coming out on 2022 before everyone else.

You're getting a preview 2 years before Switch owners. Like living in the future. Stop complaining.

When it takes a whole generation to release a game, that can't even run on said generation.

This game was meant for next gen hardware.

This game was in development for so long it missed the entire PS4/Xbox One generation and they decided to release it on there anyway.

CDPR comes off as a PC developer first but consoles make up the bulk of sales for games, so they had to target consoles but the damn game took so long they missed the runway. There's a huge install base on the previous gen as well, which makes sense to target if most sales come from console. Their ambitions were too much for that hardware though. I can't imagine it was an easy call to make, but it was the wrong one. This hurt their reputation a lot, I have to imagine. There is a lot of shit being slung back and forth in that office behind closed doors.

  • Abandon the previous gen versions and refund everyone who bought it who wants a refund. Stop patching these versions in February
  • Focus all efforts on PS5/XSX being amazing versions
  • Apologize again afterward
That's one man on the internet's suggestion, so they should probably carve it in stone.

People have lost their minds about this game.

I feel really sorry for the Cyberpunk dev team.

I love it and think it's amazing. I think many people are so angry because they can't experience it as they want to experience it, and 2020 has been such a shitshow it was probably looked forward to as some kind of redeeming experience.

Time will be kind to it.

I've only played Cyberpunk briefly, but in my time there is nothing complicated that this game is doing in terms of AI or CPU usage that couldn't have even been done on the PS3/360. In fact, in many ways it feels like a step back compared to more modern open world titles in that regard.

The problem doesn't really have anything to do with game design, but mostly optimization. Simply put, if you design a game with Zen 2 in mind, it will be nearly impossible to run on last gen. However, this doesn't appear to be the case.b Most of these are issues of graphical optimization, because Cyberpunk is no more complicated from a design standpoint than many other titles.

They took the lazy path by simply doing some last minute scaling and the results speak for themselves, they're abysmal on base consoles and there's no reason why they can't be DECENT.

I won't blame the costumers because they were clearly deceived. But, c'mon, if you are a gaffer you ought to know, right?
That's what I mean. Random person who picks it up at the store, ok, but if you're on GAF or pay a decent amount of attention to games, you kind of did it to yourselves.

It's so weird seeing these threads after playing on Series X

Seems the best solution would have been to bin last gen entirely and come out around Xmas 2021

I was being sarcastic...
Obviously...that is...not...how the stock...market...works.

I have a vivid recollection. After one of TW3 delays, their stock fell by around 10%, if I remember correctly. You can look at the graph to learn what happened afterwards. Evidently, this ordeal has just started and has the potential to be much more devastating than a simple delay. But the stock market tends to be dynamic. If I remember correctly they have a number of institutional investors behind them, including a few considerable Polish and international funds.

They have offered a full refund.

So I don't quite see what this particular gamer would stand to gain from their stocks plummeting, except that he'd be able to buy them really cheap.

Somehow I don't think that's what he has in mind.
Lol sorry man. I've read so much bullshit the last few weeks I honestly don't know what's real anymore. It's like the goddamned twilight zone..

CDPR pulled a No Mans Sky with Cyberpunk.

Their ambition was miles ahead of what they could actually pull off in the time they gave themselves. Cyberpunk needed another six months in the oven.

The CPU is doing a lot more than just AI and game logic. I mean the amount of streaming compressed assets in and out of memory alone is taxing on the CPU and a challenge the game is struggling with.

Theproblem doesn't really have anything to do with game design, but mostly optimization. Simply put, if you design a game with Zen 2 in mind, it will be nearly impossible to run on last gen. Again I am not suggesting that the gameplay or mechanics are too much for old consoles, but you might have a somewhat simplified idea of what "optimization" entails. It isn't just a matter of efficient code.

They took the lazy path by simply doing some last minute scaling and the results speak for themselves, they're abysmal on base consoles and there's no reason why they can't be DECENT.
Right. It could be done. But it might mean more drastic changes to the assets, actually changing things around, removing props, simplifying assets, putting limits on the number of unique characters and vehicles that can be in memory, that kind of thing. Gameplay doesn't have to be sacrificed but the idea that it can just use the same assets wholesale at a lower LOD might be a little naive too.

I'm mostly happy with the PC version experience, even though I don't have cutting edge rig and there are some small graphical glitches, overall it looks nice and runs ok.

I think the best solution would have been for them to NOT to deceive consumers. The rest is just frosting.
