In this week's TIME, Christopher John Farley reveals why Dave Chappelle decided to leave his hit show and what he's been up to since he disappeared to South Africa two weeks ago.

So Chris Farley did the report? How ironic.

I really hope that was sarcasm...

Why do I need sarcasm? Lots of celebs have found religion and stop the biz

As a black man I retain the right to smack Dave upside the head for dumb shit

Money does things to people

Yeah, he's been muslim for years now...

I'm talking about going back to Africa to a "Friend" who is going to put ideas in his head about how to "LIVE" as one - even if he has been one people in religions will always tell you how to live your life in a way that follows the path... whatever it may be

Dave is the man. Maybe he is being a little too dramatic about the situation, but I can understand why he'd want to back off like he did.

I'm not concerned about when he comes back, since I've always gotten the Chappelle Show stuff months after it aired (up in Canada here). I just hope he returns to the show at all. At least it sounds like the network and writing team aren't the problem -- he probably has a good thing going there.

Every interview of Chappelle I see, the more respect I get for the man. He has his priorities in the right place. Wish more celebrities were like him. Just goes to show how the media doesn't have any idea what they're talking about.

NEW YORK - Comedian Dave Chappelle wants to set things straight: "I'm not crazy, I'm not smoking crack," he tells Time magazine in an interview more than a week after his hit Comedy Central show was suspended and the rumors started to fly.

"I'm definitely stressed out," said Chappelle, who took off last month to South Africa for a "spiritual retreat," leaving his fans — and even his agent and publicist — wondering where he went.

"You hear so many voices jockeying for position in your mind that you want to make sure that you hear your own voice," he said. "So I figured, let me just cut myself off from everybody, take a minute and pull a Flintstone — stop a speeding car by using my bare feet as the brakes."

After Comedy Central announced that the planned May 31 debut of the third season of "Chappelle's Show" had been postponed, the magazine Entertainment Weekly reported that Chappelle had checked himself into a mental health facility in South Africa.

"I'm not in a mental facility," said Chappelle, who also said he did not have a drug problem but had consulted a psychiatrist for one 40-minute visit.

The 31-year-old comedian said he fled to stay with friends in Durban because he wasn't happy with the direction of the show, which is behind only "South Park" as Comedy Central's most-watched program.

"There's a lot of resistance to my opinions, so I decided, 'Let me remove myself from this situation,'" Chappelle said.

Comedy Central president Doug Herzog told Time that the star has "complete creative freedom." He has told staff he believes there won't be a "Chappelle's Show" in 2005, but leaves the option open for the comedian's return.

Chappelle, whose wife and two children live in Ohio, said he hopes to start up the show again, but did not indicate when he would return.

Comedy Central had inked a reported $50 million deal to keep "Chappelle's Show" for two more seasons, and the comedian hinted to Time about struggles associated with the power and fame that come with that kind of success.

"If you don't have the right people around you, and you're moving at a million miles an hour, you can lose yourself," he said. "Everyone around me says, 'You're a genius, you're great, that's your voice,' but I'm not sure that they're right."

Comedian Dave Chappelle has reportedly returned home to Ohio after a "spiritual retreat" in South Africa.

Fans feared Chappelle had checked into a mental facility earlier this month when news circulated he'd halted his hit U.S. comedy show Chappelle's Show to seek medical help in Africa.

But the funnyman insisted he was just "stressed out" and needed a break.

Now, Chappelle has returned to his hometown of Yellow Springs, but his agent Matt Labov insists there's still no signs that he'll return to making his show and he has been told not to book any live performances.

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Is Dave Chappelle back?

The AWOL comedian dropped in unannounced at two popular comedy clubs Thursday night, saying he had just arrived in Los Angeles and felt like performing, Daily Variety reported Friday. Entertainment Weekly reported CollegeHumor.com made note of Chappelle's appearance at a show sponsored by the site. (See story.)

Chappelle served up some impromptu standup to stunned audiences at the Hollywood Improv and the Comedy Store, the trade paper said.

Chappelle, 31, took off last month to South Africa for a "spiritual retreat," leaving his fans -- and even his agent and publicist -- wondering where he went.

After Comedy Central announced that the planned May 31 debut of the third season of "Chappelle's Show" had been postponed, the magazine Entertainment Weekly reported that Chappelle had checked himself into a mental health facility in South Africa.

But Chappelle denied checking into a mental facility or having a drug problem in an interview with Time magazine.

Instead, he fled to stay with friends in Durban because he wasn't happy with the direction of the show, which is behind only "South Park" as Comedy Central's most-watched program.

Calls to Chappelle's publicist and Comedy Central were not immediately returned Friday morning.

An unnamed Comedy Central representative told Variety that network officials would be sitting down with Chappelle to talk business "really, really soon."

He'll probably have all new stuff about his trips to Africa, which may or may not be bitten from Richard Pryor's stuff about his trips to Africa...

So what's the latest on Mr Chappelle? Has anyone got any information on whether he's coming back and doing the show or what? Has he made any public statements yet?

So any new news about when the season 3 is going to start? I seriously need some chappelle right now.(no not in a gay way)

Last I heard is that because the show got so huge, CC was trying to scale back his humor, saying that now because the show was so mainstream that he couldnt get away with a lot of the jokes he was doing in the past.

Not sure where they are now though.

LOS ANGELES -- They had hoped to thrive. But so far, the suits who run the Comedy Central network said they have managed to survive without Dave Chappelle this season.

Two months ago, the network announced that Chappelle had stopped work on the third season of the show. The season was to begin in May but that didn't happen. What's more, there's still no word on when Chappelle will return to work.

Comedy Central's president said little has changed since Chappelle left the show. Doug Herzog told The Hollywood Reporter that Chappelle spoke with him a few weeks ago and said he needed a bit more time.

Herzog said despite Chappelle's absence, the network's ratings are actually a little higher than when Chappelle's show was airing.

Between the daily Mad TV marathons and that Blue Collar shit, it pretty much is.

Then there's the new show Stella which is awful and has little to no direction.

I hope they cancel his outrageously overpaid ass. Fucking get an ego check, Chappelle.

Ego? This is a matter of creative content control...get your facts straight.

i think chappelles new contract was a bit overpaid. chappelle is hilarious, but watching the season 2 dvd, a lot of it is kind of mediocre. the worst part is that 5 minutes of every episode is eaten up by some shitty rap/R&B/whatever group. so basically he was getting paid $50 million to do 16 minutes worth of comedy per show.

He says he's been playing WoW.

He goes on a spiritual retreat and then comes back to level-up his character...am I missing something here?

He hit level 60 and now he's ready to get back to work.

Heh... how much do you think Comedy Central got paid if Dave got $50 mil. Lets keep it in perspective.

well thats true, but i was just commenting on it not from a "fair proportion" stance but rather chappelles talent vs. the dollar amount. i guess "overpaid" would be the wrong word in a sense that chappelle should get a great deal of the profits made from himself. but i dont think he's a "50 million dollar comedian"

Its all relative. If my company is making 100k a year off my talent and I'm getting paid $50k, then sure - there might be some room for saying someone is overpaid. If my company is making $2 billion a year from my talent and I'm getting $5 million or hell even $50 million, I'm getting shafted up the ass horribly horribly bad. His lawyers are basing their numbers off him being shafted beyond reason on the original seasons and DVD sales - and that's totally fair.

I saw a Stella tape a long whiles back and it was a solid hour and half of dildo jokes. Not funny at all, so I wrote them off, and I'm a HUGE State fan.

Both Stella and Mind of Mencia is pretty much junk. South Park and Daily Show, and Reno 911 (somewhat inexplicably) keep Comedy Central afloat.

Chappelle's show is over and out:
"Don't hold your breath waiting for new episodes of Chappelle's Show, which saw it's third season postponed last May amid reports that Dave Chappelle suffered a stress-related meltdown. "Chappelle's Show is done," says costar Charlie Murphy. "It took me a long time to say those words, but it's the truth." Murphy, who wouldn't reveal what ultimately did the show in, believes the footage already shot will likely be released on DVD later this year. "The stuff Dave did was remarkable," he says of the final episodes. "It [would have been] his best season yet." Counters a Comedy Central flack: "We haven't been told that Dave is not returning. He's got issues, he's dealing with them, and the ball is now in his court."
