I agree with Dan but for the hell of it i'd just say that POTA didn't feel like a Burton movie and was a big summer box office movie (less control).

Well I think it's important to note Burton was just a hired hand for POTA, besides it was more of action movie, something I wouldn't want Burton doing. Burton does great things with fairytales, and CATCF seems perfectly inline for him.

PS I think Henry Selick should get much more credit for his work on TNBC.

Yeah, could you do one that conforms to 1280x800? ;)

Is this Dracula?

And although I don't normally like Goth stuff most everything Burton touches turns to gold, so I have extreme faith in this project

Isn't it true though that with Planet of the Apes Burton was just brought into direct and didnt have much control over the script?

Burton seems to be pretty good when oing Book Adaptations, and Planet of the Apes was nothing like the book (neither was the 60's version, but the excuse then was it would have cost WAY to much to be like the book)

It seems a lot of the negativity is due to the previous movie. It is difficult to go against Gene Wilder, but the book is very dark, and Wonka is a dark character.

Roald Dahl knew exactly how to tread that line between scaring and thrilling children - certainly for me anyway.

My most wanted movie right now. Burton + Elfman + Depp = rock. Corpse Bride falling in as a close second!

BTW, thanks for the great desktop adaption Mana. :)

Name one good Tim Burton action scene.

The final ape battle in Planet of the Apes.

What's with all the hate for this movie anyway? Sure, it's not a masterpiece or anything but it's a decent enough remake. Is it runoff from the general distaste for Marky Mark or did the site of Helena Bonham Carter in full-on ape regalia bring up a lot of uncomfortable beastial urges?

A lot of the movie just seems very forced. I'm convinced, to this day, that it's the one movie Burton did because he was contractually obligated to do so (no matter what he might have said on the press tour, where everyone's forced to smile.) It's just such an anomaly on an otherwise Pretty Damned Impressive track record.

By biggest problems with PotA was the ending, they tried to have a shocker ending like the original, but ended up with something laughable. Up until the ending, I thought it was a passable film, with a pretty strong supporting cast carying Mark though it.

My other problem, was as big of a fan I am of the original 60's movie, I REALLY wanted this new movie to be an adaptation of the book.

The Book had teh apes as an advanced culture, but it was decided it would cost to much, and that why the 60's version has them living in huts. The ending of the book was also even a better shocker than the 60's version.

I'll be interested in seeing how the movie turns out, but I don't think there's any denying that Gene Wilder's performance in the original is superb. The man looked or perhaps was insane and it translated well for the performance.

Hrmmm, this should be interesting...I'm reading the book tonight for the first time since 5th grade...It says Oompa-Loompas wear deerskins. The males, at least. The women wear leaves and the children go naked.

Edit: Their skin is "rosy white," so I can't imagine we'll be seeing orange Oompa-Loompas in this.

Edit #2: Oh man, Depp is TOO perfect for this. Between Fear and Loathing, Pirates, and Benny and Joon...Perfect.

OMG... This movie is going to own... I can't believe this is the first I've heard of it... it's like between the the HHGTG and this, they are taking my favorite childhood books and making kick ass movies about them...

I watched the POTA remake before I watched the original. Watching them in reverse order, you'd expect the modern production and sensibilities of the remake to make the film much more enjoyable than a fourty year old film.

I guess it's a testament to the quality of the 1960's version, but I enjoyed it a lot more. I found the remake to be quite boring and felt really clumbsy in the way it approached the thematic issues of race and society.

Aside from not being particularly 'good' in any traditional sense of the word, the hate stems from the fact that it simply isn't as good as the original.

so is this a sequel to willy wonka & the choclate factory then?

or a remake?
A movie that supposedly stays truer to the original novel. Think of each movie as a different interpretation of the book. Same source material, different result.

It would sooooooo rock if Depp turned out an awesome performance in this and was awarded the Oscar he should have gotten this last go 'round for it. If he can get nomintated for Pirates I'm sure he could pull one out for this.

Or just be nominated for Finding Neverland.
