So, whose going to watch it? I want to.

And, what do you GAF'rs think of it? Also, do you think it'll influence anyone's opinion on the upcoming election as far as who they will vote for?

I'll be watching, but I don't think it'll have any significant impact on the upcoming election. Vice presidential candidates almost never do.

That said, there is a chance that Dick Cheney will severely injure or kill John Edwards, which I suppose would shake things up a bit.

I'm going to watch it just because either Cheney's experience is gonna mop the floor with Edwards or Edwards using his accusatory lawyer skills is going to hammer the shit outta of Cheney on Foreign and Domestic issues.

Either way hopefully it'll be interesting.

This is Edwards playing ground - debating. He will tear Cheney apart.

Cheney's been around the block a bit too. Kind of ironic that the best debate will probably come from the people who have the least importance in terms of what their job calls for.

Yeah, Edwards is a trial lawyer-- how can Cheney possibly out-debate him? I've never heard Cheney debate before, but that sounds like a mighty tall order, regardless of who's "right" on the issues. Lawyers can talk their way out of a paper bag (and many do :D).

I think that it will be entertaining only cuz Cheney is such a dick. He just comes off as incredibally unlikeable. Edwards is just the opposite even though his gestures and what not seem forced an insincere.

Quite a contrast still. Should be fun. Can't wait to see the Cheny cam. We need an animated gif w/ Bush's facial expressions during Kerry's remarks. That sh!t was funny.

Yeah, but most elections also aren't this close with so much back-and-forth. Due to the first debate Kerry-Edwards has the momentum, but if Cheney does well tonight that could take a little bit of the pressure off of George, rather than increasing it.

I'll definitely be watching. Simply to have followed politics so much in the last few years, I can't rightly convince myself that watching some of the most important and focused arguing between the two biggest campaigns isn't interesting enough and worth my time.

I haven't heard anything about it, but The Daily Show isn't doing another live after-debate special, are they? Any plans for more of those after other debates, or not until election night?

EDIT: To add to this, I didn't watch any of the debates in 2000, nor vote. That "Guess you'll vote this time, hippie." shirt speaks to me.

What was this?

Saw it on Leno or some late night show. Basically they just spliced all the footage of Bush while Kerry was speaking and it was hilarious. Rolling his eyes, huffing... Came off like he had better things to do. Very un-Presidential.

Oh ok this sounds like that faces of frustration clip that was posted here a bit back...

http://www.democrats.org/news/200410010006.html

Bush blinks alot when he's upset....

One thing I'm curious about is how the combination of the two talking points will work out.

A) President Bush is a better choice than Al Gore/John Kerry choice because he's not a lifelong politician tainted by the system.

B) Dick Cheney is a better choice than John Edwards because he's got decades of political experience.

Yeah, it is true. It'll be fun to just see this because Cheney is such a dick. I'd rather have Bush in for two more terms than ever to have Cheney for president for even just a single term.

Then again, both of those situations would just plain suck.

Cheney ate Lieberman alive last year.

This debate will really come down to Cheney's pervasive fearmongering versus Edward's ability to keep bringing up stuff in Cheney's past that clearly shows him to be untrustworthy and malicious, because Edwards is a clear juxtaposition to those two values.

I think Cheney will come out and try the trial lawyer meme and stick with it, bringing it up as much as possible. Undecided voters don't really hate trial lawyers (it never hurt Edwards when he was running for Senate), just the wing of the GOP that Dick Cheney resides in, the same wing of people like Ralph Reed and Grover Norquist. The meme will go nowhere, Cheney will look serious but will sneer a lot and get almost visibly angry when provoked by Edwards due to the campaign's unwillingness to accept criticism in their campaign stops.

Edwards will win, but it won't really matter. VP debates are basically just feed for late-night talk shows unless one of the candidates is really, really off, such as Perot's Admiral Stockdale back in 1992.

I'm psyched for it. Edwards is a great public speaker, and I really want to see how he fairs against Cheney. Plus you know the spin Cheney uses is going to be funny as fuck. And I don't know about others, but if my mind wasn't already made up, a VP debate could definitely sway my opinion. As you can see, we voted in a whole administration of fuckups in 2000. You're not just voting for the President.

I'll definitely watch.

Chris Matthews described it as "The Collie versus the Pit Bull." Who can stay away from that kind of a dog fight?

I wish Edwards didn't smile so damn much, and looked serious from time to time. He has this 'everyone likes me' vibe. Which is a total opposite to Cheny's 'I'm Rich B!tch!' vibe.

I like the "Darth Vader vs. Luke Skywalker" comparison better, if only because it implies weapons will be involved, and Cheney - at some point - will reveal himself to be Edwards' father.

There's only a 12 year difference between the two. Cheney having a son at age 12....just wait his base learns about this.

Edwards tends to do worse in sit-down sessions. He had a bad performance at Meet the Press during the primaries.

I expect Cheney to chew up Edwards, moreso than Lieberman.

How'd Edwards get that awful bump on his lip? Of all places. It's noticeably absent in slightly older pictures.

edwards.jpg

Does he have it drained or something? It clearly fluctuates in size from appearance to appearance. Looks hard as a frozen pea.

Looks like I'll be watching.

Dude, Edwards is not an experienced debator. His first debates ever were during the primaries. This one could easily go either way.

What do you all think the effect of Bremer's comments will have on the debate tonight. I mean we should all expect Edwards to be ready to run a hard fight with an eleoquent debater. I mean we all know that Cheney is the driving force of this administration and to me Edwards is really going up against the true president.

Not much - nothing that exposes this administrations lack of preparedness or their rush to war seems to stick. Besides, Bremer's still saying that this was the "absolutely the right thing to do" and that the forces in Iraq are now sufficient.

I like how Bush brushed of a reporter's question for a response to two Republican senators who had questioned his plan in Iraq by saying, "Uh... both of those senators strongly endorse my presidency."

I guess I expect Cheney to do the same, but with a bit more eloquence.

"Go f**k yourself, John. Whew, that felt good. Doing much better now, thanks."

Cheney is such a creep. Is there anyone scarier, from a pure malice standpoint, than Cheney in Washington? I mean, there *are* scarier people in DC, but that's because they combine great power with great ignorance (Douglas Feith, Donald Rumsfeld), but no one is as pure evil as this automaton.

He did have better things to do.

The fact that he had to stand up there and listen to Kerry manipulate and lie about his positions probably made Bush want to throw up.

Bush does enough manipulation and lying of his own positions to make me throw up.

Zell Miller.

At least you know where Bush stands.

Kerry will pander to whatever group he's speaking to.

Kerry... "It was a mistake to remove Saddam and go into Iraq."

...1 minute later

"Are you saying our troops are dying for a mistake Senator Kerry?"

Kerry.. "Oh well, of course they are not dying for a mistake Jim."

This guy has no conviction in anything he says.

But he served in Vietnam so he must be qualified for the job.

Zell Miller is comedy. He's a appointed puppet Democrat with no real power in Senate at all.

Not fearsome or scary at all because he has no power.
