This...is one of the worst ideas I've heard from a politician in quite some time (without even taking a Republican to suggest it at that).

Or maybe educate them on why going to university/getting an internship/joining armed forces/etc is in their best interest instead of making it mandatory for graduation? Heart's in the right place but this seems like the wrong way to go about things.

The kids that would struggle to get an acceptance letter are the one's that would struggle most to get their diploma, so we're not going to give it to them even if they earn it?

Seriously, how did this thought not cross his brain at any point since 2011?

Not everyone is built for secondary education

What? Everyone is built for it in some sense, they may just not want/be able to go.

I like the idea superficially, but unless CPS are offering to pay application fees and to step up their placement programs, it's going to hurt a shit ton of people -- especially people in poorer neighborhoods.

This is so garbage. Its like Rahm wants to give Republicans something they can point at and say look at the evil liberals.

Graduating High School means you achieved what the state set out for you to achieve in High School. What you do after should not have any bearing on your diploma.

So now Poor Families will now be denied even a basic high school diploma because of their socio-economic status.

This is... regressive. It'll most hurt the people who already lack support and opportunity for pursuing those post-high school programs.

This seems so dumb to do, knowing the transformative change we're going to see with labor and society over the coming years/decades.

This is almost a rejection to reality. Jesus Christ...

I live in Chicago and work for a vendor company of several CPS schools and used to be a teacher and this is complete bullshit. A student's diploma that they EARN should not be tied to an arbitrary acceptance letter. Completely insane to not allow them to graduate and get something they earned. Rahm is the fucking worst and I hope he is gone next year.

K-12 cannot strictly be a college/military prep program. A commmnity that does not allow someone with only a GED equivalent to make a living wage is a failed society.

Seems absolutely pointless. Just pick a garbage for-profit school, enroll, graduate, cancel enrollment.

A better plan would be to have mandatory career classes that teaches the pitfalls of garbage scam colleges, the dangers of being pressured by american society to completely ruin your life with un-erasable student loans, and the current needs of the market along with how a whole lot of degrees are pointless.

So basically blocking a few students to graduate because in reality and not Rahm's bullshit world, getting an acceptance to any college is a tough thing to do?

So put high school graduates in debt before they even graduate. Or indentured servitude with the military or unpaid internship. Wonderful plan please get fucked.

Really they could make this successful if they made community colleges free. If you really don't want high school to be the end goal, then put your money where your mouth is and invest in these kids instead of forcing them to pay just to get their diplomas they are already working hard to achieve.

That requires money which CPS doesn't have. It's actually insulting the more than I think about this. This city has paid over half a billion dollars in police brutality lawsuits since 2004, but can't pay for schools. The shortfall is so bad at CPS that they had to take 3 furlough days and might need to close schools 3 weeks early this year.

CPS isn't even meeting the minimum requirements of what they should be doing for these students so how dare Rahm try to pull some shit like this!

im struggling to think of a positive effect from this policy tbh

You'll just get more kids into programs that won't make them competitive for the job market anyway because it's over saturated ON TOP of discouraging people who can't afford to go to college from even passing high school?

Tf is this???

The only people that benefit are universities.

ahahaahahha

our state's budget and budget situation is fucked sideways, and all the jobs are pissing off to lower taxed states surrounding illinois

As someone with only a high school diploma who makes nearly six-figures...no. Not to mention I didn't have a clue what I wanted to do with my life at 18.

tbqh if you're the kind of free spirit that doesn't need society's rules, maaaan, to tell you how to succeed then you can fake an acceptance letter.

Incredibly authoritarian. Students have the right to choose for themselves what they want to do after high school.

For many people, college might be a massive mistake. Many want to go travelling or have a job waiting for them after high school. Forcing them immediately into continuing education is madness.

Government overreach.

Seems like something with good intentions that will inevitably backfire. Provide an incentive of some kind for kids to do this, don't deny kids their freaking diploma.

Did this dude suck this bad before he was reelected to a second term?

Why not just help students figure out what their possible paths are, rather than trying to make them take extra steps to get something they already earned? good god this is terrible

This is bad. Like said it's an idea that might sound good at first until you think about it. Let's say you are even able to apply to college or trade school of any kind and get accepted but you can't afford to go. This is making a person go through that process only in the end they can't go through with it for a lot of valid reasons. So upon leaving high school you are doing a hit job on the morale of a ton of students!? What about the kids that just barely get through high school and can't get accepted anywhere? That are able to get some jobs of some kind but they don't qualify or even are considered internships or apprentice ships? Fuck them? There are certainly going to be a number of kids that think they're being forced to apply for the military because they don't qualify for the other requirements and I don't think anyone needs to explain how fucked up that is. Are they going to be accepting exemptions of any kind for kids that fill these requirements for a number of reasons?

The schools should probably work on educating these poor kids then, instead of pumping and dumping them out.

Translation: the city is going to make it more difficult for poor black and brown kids to get their diploma in hopes of incentivinzing them to pour money into community colleges and universities with no regard for your socioeconomic status....or they can join the military because...well black bodies are disposable.

Literally forcing people into the military.

Fuck this guy. There is not a worse Democrat in the entire country.

Pretty much all of Obama's biggest mistakes can be traced back to taking bad advice from this piece of shit too.
And from his brother who is in the medical industry

Things were bad but Rahm really went off the rails shortly after being reelected. He has a good 20 months to squeak by before the next election and every voter can forget what he has done and will re-elect him

The cynical part of me thinks this has so little to do with higher education and so much to do with pushing young black men into the military.

Which they didn't do apparently.

There is no way they did unless the true purpose of this is to as said fuck poor people over, especially black and brown kids and more then likely force a huge number of kids into the military every year. Schools of any kind after high school have limits when it comes to how many people they accept. Their numbers are few. Only so many people can be accepted for a job. Now unless Chicago is going to be creating jobs every year this is a way to funnel students directly into the military or to have them simply drop out.

The only way this could even theoretically help is if schools are provided some form of funding based on graduation rates and even then it seems likely to lead to a spiral of decay.

Well anyone that's going to graduate from CPS anyway can easily be accepted into one of the city colleges. Anyone that thinks this is going to screw over some kid I'd love for you to explain why. Being accepted doesn't mean you have to go.

I appreciate the sentiment that higher education is important and people should never stop learning, but this is probably the most disastrous approach you could take in trying to reach that goal.
