i think it's a step in the right direction in making sure kids have long term goals and are actually preparing for life after grade school.

Exactly, some things do not come with a dumb acceptance letter. This is going to last less than a year.
Graduation rates aren't what people look at; it's matriculation into whatever is next. Law schools are ranked by the jobs their graduates get. High schools are ranked by the college, university, etc. that people are accepted to. I've heard of law schools asking students not to graduate in order to preserve their rankings. This seems like the same insanely stupid strategy.
I understand the law schools at least, because they rely on rankings to make money to stay in business. What could possibly be gained by not graduating students in a public school system? Also, if you don't graduate someone who finishes the course work, they're going to sue, and almost certainly win.

Sounds like a really stupid idea. A letter of acceptance isn't that hard to get by and by no means a guarantee that the student will follow through by any stretch to get a higher education especially with how expensive it can get. It just seems to me that they just made graduation just harder for little to no real help to the students especially if the student is poor. If someone is down this basically kicks them down.

Sounds like a great way to push poor kids into either giving up or having to join the military.

Many universities will also waive application fees if you show economic hardship.

No one has ever had that requirement before and we really shouldn't expect much from Rahm. He doesn't have the people's best interest in mind.
How about reducing tuition for city public school graduates at the colleges in the city? Bam, i just made that up and it's a much better incentive that the drivel he's been working on for months. Pay me his salary.

This is true. I had economic hardship and it was waived for me.

60% of CPS students already provide a plan - the goal of Learn Plan Succeed is to have students start planning and thinking about their future so they can achieve their goals with the help of passionate counselors, staff, and educators.

...this really isn't all that bad. People in this thread seem to be overreacting. If someone doesn't want to go to college after high school and just wants to travel the world/ get married, it looks like they simply have to show a letter of acceptance, not a letter of intent to enroll. They can simply choose not to go to the community college or university, but at least they realize that they now have the option.

You're automatically accepted into a city college, which counts for this, if you graduate from a Chicago Public School.
So everyone can 100% get the required acceptance letter.
The idea is stupid as hell regardless, though.
