Triforce and System 246 designs are shared with other companies.
System 246 isn't even shared, it's all Namco's. Does Sega have to share some degree of revenue from TriForce games with Nintendo and Namco though?

Hunh, I thought Key of Avalon was NAOMI?

BTW, Ollie King is great. The producer was one of the key JSRF staffers and the soundtrack is FUCKING AWESOME because it's 100% Hideki Naganuma.

Wario64

works for Gamestop (lol)
Ollie King's music does rock, gets constant play time in my player

So will it actually be possible to gets these Chihiro games running (on Xbox)? Pretty interesting news though

Nope, TriForce. Was a pretty big deal when it was announced since there werent many games for the board yet... and it's been one of their most sucessful titles since.

"I just want you to know my real name! It's Xbox!"

Not bitter, just unsweetened
I think the cooler news is they can start working on porting some other games to arcade units. :)

Question: is the GD-ROM that is used the game format as the Dreamcast's? Did Sega create the format in the first place?

Definite yes to the first question, and I'm pretty sure that Sega created the format much the same way Nintendo created the GC discs.

GD-ROM was developed by Yamaha for Sega. It's used in Dreamcast, Naomi, Naomi 2, TriForce anbd Chihiro platforms. GOD (GameCube Optical Disc) was developed by Matsushita for Nintendo.

Those were the specifics I was looking for, thanks jarrod :)

It just didn't seem right to me that either company could create or heavily modify a new/existing form of optical media, but the inflection I was going for didn't ring through right.

Q: What exactly is Chihiro?

A: An XBox with GD-ROM connector and more optional RAM. That's it.

Going back to the original post, what is the point of this news in the first place?

Chihiro is an XB with more RAM, just as the ST-V is a Saturn with more RAM, just as NAOMI is a Dreamcast with more RAM. There's nothing surprising about this at all.

It means that they can rip the GD-ROMs using a Dreamcast and play them on a modded Xbox, thus bringing the arcade home without waiting on Sega to port the games. Course, the problem is how much extra RAM the games require...but...

Lazy8s

The ghost of Dreamcast past
Arcade OutRun 2 uses 128 MB RAM. Getting all of the tracks to fit on Xbox was the main challenge when going down to its 64 MB, but that was handled faithfully with smarter loading.
