Why aren't Japanese toilets more widespread in the US?

I have never used one but it seems like the proper way to do things. Best of all worlds.

You would think we would be putting at least one of these bad boys in every new home built.

After living in Japan for nearly 9 years and having my own private space age heated seat cover/bidet, you guys have no idea how much you're missing out on. This would so catch on in the US if it were given a proper chance. Wet wipes are barbaric. It's all about the warm pulsating hands free spray and auto odor extraction and freshening as you sit on the seat. Mines self cleaning to boot.

Hey speaking of weird things to pick a fight with Japan over, is South Korea still trying to get Americans to call the Sea of Japan as the East Sea?

Considering we had to throw our dirty toilet paper in the trash can instead of flushing it when we stayed in Beijing.. They really could take a lesson or 2.

I find that practice disgusting. A bin full of shitstained paper slowly rotting and filling the room with the unmistakable whiff of buttnuggets.

I think the Chinese have more pertinent products to worry about. It's not like they can take a dump on how Chinese people buy baby food from Hong Kong or diapers from Japan because they all privately think baby food and diapers made in China are dangerous.

Really, they shouldn't try shaming people for wanting to take a shit in comfort.

I'm off to china for about 5 weeks this summer, guess I have this to look forward to...

Just pray you find a Mcdonalds,KFC or other western restaurant/cafe like Starbucks they usually have western toilets.

Saved my butt so many times when I was in Thailand.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

A disturbing amount of people do that in public restrooms in SoCal even though they have the option to flush it.

Yeh those in ground toilets suck. I dont know how you're supposed to use one when jeans or something, do you just arch your back inward and hope everything comes out in the right direction?

I lived in Brunei and they had these at a lot of places and in the 3 years there I cant recall ever using one. Just the smell and the acrid water sitting around....goddamn.

This planet needs a Reverse Prime Directive when it comes to stuff like this. We need to take the couple billion people squating over rancid holes and uplift them to Japanese standards. Imagine what our species could do then?

Japanese squat too. The squatting toilets are even called "Japanese style" in Japan and sitting toilets are "Western style"

But the heated seats? The water jets? The custom settings? The light jazz in the backround? The soothing haikus and gentle encouragements? All Japan. Let's give credit where the credit is due.

For reference, the typical toilet in China:

For what it's worth, I actually got used to this while I was in China for a month. At first it was pretty disconcerting, but after a while it felt like my normal toilet, and poops come out better through the natural squat. But I will say most public ones were quite....vomit inducing.
