HONG KONG - Chow Yun-Fat says he can't stand the American way of life and has no plans to pursue U.S. permanent resident status.

"I can't stand talking English every day or the lifestyle there ... not to mention the food," the Hong Kong-born film star was quoted as saying in Friday's editions of Chinese-language newspaper The Sun. "I only go to America for work. When I finish work, I leave immediately. I won't stay one day longer."

Chow rose to fame in Hong Kong with gangster movies including "A Better Tomorrow" before moving to Hollywood, where he has starred in films such as "The Replacement Killers" and "Anna and the King."

He couldn't be contacted for comment Friday, a National Day holiday in Hong Kong.

LOL!

At least he didn't insult the people, right? Just the way they talk, eat, and live, right?

Meh. Still a great actor. 'Cept Bulletproof Monk. Why oh why, Chow?

He's partially right though. The American lifestyle is basically that of a glutton, eat, spend, get over on others and ask for handouts.

We have no culture, our food sucks and we have some of the most uncouth human beings on the face of the planet.

I'm not mad that he dissed the US (I'm mostly in agreement actually) but if you hate America so much, why stick around here and make a bunch of stupid ass movies with Sean William Scott that ruin your cred as an actor? Go back to HK and make good movies.

K having been to Hong Kong.. I can honestly say that its not very comfortable there. The food is good, yes, BUT the humid weather, the cramped up living spaces, and the dirty folk there are pretty dirty. I think Show Yun was just trying to show how he still loves where he's from and wont be considered a sellout.

Edit: Hitman: Yeah, but to say that he hates living in America is a little bit stronger than "I'd rather live in HK", ne?

I've been lucky enough to travel the world, and Hong Kong is absolutely my favourite City. If I could, I'd go and live there. Utterly wonderful place.

...you must be Chinese.

At first glance he seems to be 'dissing'( can't find the word I'm looking for) but when you read it properly, it's just seems that he is unaccustomed to the American Way of Life which is probably fair at his age.

what exactly is american food and what makes it so bad? Everywhere you go it's a retaurant that has chinese, mexican, japanese, italian food. I mean if hes talking fast food, then yeah but our food is other cultures food, basically.

He's talking about the extreme fattiness that is FRIED MARSBARS

My penis is still intact.
I believe that counts as Scottish food. They'll deep fry anything.

American food is fast food. Sure, you have other cultures food too, but so does pracitcally everywhere in the world now. At least, it's fast food if you go to an American diner.

Ask for handouts? Yeah, let's disregard that Americans work more hours (and jobs likely) than any nation in the world. As for glutton.... he's like fat you know and chinese food is ugh... some of the most fattening in the world.

Crappy fast food, and more fattening bastardized versions of other cultures foods are what I think of as "American food"

Americanized "Chinese food" is, not real Chinese food. I've been to China, there's like 1 obese person for every 50 in the US.

What? Battered 'anything' was like a 4 month fad that died out sharply thereafter, that shit isn't going around anymore here, and hopefully never will again.

Quite true - I've been to chinese restaurants in US, Korea, Japan, Slovenia, and they are all different both from one another (different style of localization) and from the real Chinese food as well (of which I tried both restaurants and homecooked variations).

Been there done that. Not all the food here is bastardized, go dlook in your flipping phone book, you can probably find at least one damned decent restaurant. And when all else fails, why not just cook your own food? God, I feel like the only person who does this anymore.

Sadly, I see there are people who freely support this thinking that all the cultures here (seriously, all?) are watered down versions of their roots. If anything, I'd like you to show me a places in other countries where I can go and pick up food that are, or are derived from many cultures around the world. Stop taking things for granted.

But really, how many people are going to have to sit through with this whole "point and laugh" way of thinking they feel makes the world go round. I would certainly like to know where much of Mr. Yun-Fat's money in his pocketbook came from.

Of course not all, but the majority I mean. And actually I do cook quite often instead of eating out.

Having done a decent amount of travelling I can tell you there are more countries that fit that description than you think.

There aren't any Americans getting rich off people in other countries?...and do you think some of those same people would dare live in those said countries?

This isn't meant to be a US bash btw.

I haven't traveled the world, but I've been to most of NA, a bit of Europe and a good chunk of Asia and I wholeheartedly agree with your statement. Hong Kong is an absolutely amazing city. Everyone must make a point to go there.

Another generalization out the window (most cultures and foods being watered down). Seems to be the common case with these articles anyways. So what do you suggest we do? Go to another country for dinner? Things don't change by sitting, pointing, and nitpicking.

And your second response confused me a bit, American's that don't make money off other countries don't live in those countries? Okay great, how does that relate to my pount? Mainly, I'm saying he's making money from us, and then waving his finger. I don't mind it really, people should speak their minds, and this isn't that serious anyways. It just seems weird to me. But that really wasn't my main point and I was half joking going about it.

No of course I wouldn't suggest that. But there are many people with the idea that they know what Chinese food is because they eat at Lucky Moon restaurant down the street, all I'm saying is that shit aint Chinese food...that's all

I've always wondered that myself.

Barbecuing is a verb, not a noun, last I checked. To me, Saying you ate BBQ is like saying "I had stir-fry." Stir-fried what? BBQed what?

My Grandfather lives in Istanbul, and the one time he came over here, he never wanted to EVER come back to US/Canada ever again. So I guess it's not just Mr Fat.

I visited my uncle who lives in New Jersey in August. Must say i was shocked with the amount of obese people waddling around your streets.

But i have to say the variety of food is what sets America apart from the rest of the world. I fuckin loved everything.

Olive Garden. mmmmmmmmmmmmmm that was a first for me. The portion of food they serve you was shocking. Fuckin huge

Pretty much the source of the problem. About the only places that don't seem to over do it are Japanese restaurants, although I think an exception can be made for the ginormous bowls of soup.

My uncle just visited the US by way of Italy, and he was appalled by the amount of fatties in the US. And i live in Cali(LA) which is supposed to have a high percentage of people in good physical shape.
Sometimes i go out to eat and lose my appetite if surrounded by too many fat people gorging themselves on fatty foods...

Hate to break it to you, but Olive Garden is pretty much the worst non-fast food restaurant chain we've got.

Well...one of them anyway.

Anyway, I don't blame Chow. If I was a foreigner, especially from a country as culturally different as China, I would probably hate this damn country too. As it is, I already hate the people. :D

ferrets ferrets ferrets ferrets FERRETS!!!
Hell, a lot of the US is fat. Whenever I go to Japan for business or whatever, it's no culture shock being over there anymore -- all the culture shock comes from going back home and seeing these huge motherfuckers all over the place.

I also find that living in the US gives me heartburn -- or, to put it another way, the sort of food I eat in the US gives me heartburn, while the sort of food I eat in Japan does not. I need to improve my eating habits, yes, but the fact is that the lazy man's diet in the US is virtually designed to make you overweight.

(I live in what you could call a "poor" section of San Francisco, and it's really true -- the closer to the poverty line you are, the worse a diet you tend to lead, and the fatter you become.)

As I've said before, there are conservatives in Canada, too, you know. In fact, if you feel so strongly about US politics, why don't you join a politicial organization and work for change? Imagine if MLK Jr. gave up and moved to Liberia.

Ah, haha, well, I would agree then.

And don't get me wrong, I've already got my clothes packed for Canada. It's not essentially the culture here I'm disappointed in, it's the support for the people we want running the country. These goons are horrible (The politicians).

You guys are blowing his comment out of portion.
I don't think he's commenting on the American lifestyle at all - he just finds it not enjoyable personally.

You have to understand, Chow Yun-Fat is one of the most approachable and down-to-earth stars in HK. Instead of high class restaurants, he regularly goes to the common night markets with his wife. He enjoys the "commoner" HK style very much.

When he's in America, I would imagine that he worked in LA... which offers a more extravagant style than he's used to.
He didn't say jack shit about fast food or fat people ;)
