When I was in South Carolina a few years ago, I was forced to try this diabolicaly disgusting "food" called Grits (at least I think that's what it's called). I nearly cried it was so bad.

As a southerner I can say that grits are insanely popular, and I'll have to agree that they are nearly inedible ;)

My parents loved them though. Lets see what Hito thinks of them....I can't stand them myself.

What was the stuff made of? I can't remember.

As for food in the US, one of the best meals I've ever had was at a Brazilian restaurant in NYC. Nothing but meat. You had this double sided beer coaster looking thing, and depending on what side was up, waiters would come along with different trays of meat for you to try. Man, did I eat like a mofo. Aside from that, the majority of food I had in the US was not so great, but good food is undoubtedly out there, and when it's good, it's real good.

*sigh* All I've been saying is that it exists. I'm not touting any paticular kind or anything else. You're just wasting your time.

This attempt at getting entertainment from the forum has backfired. :/

What you are describing is a churrascaria, which was developed for Brazilian cowboys. They put a giant piece of steak on a stick, rotate it around a fire, and then cut off the cooked edge pieces. Plus the way the serve it is awesome, if there is something wrong with all you can eat filet, then I don't want to be right.

Best steak in the world, mostly because its not usually industrial raised like most places here in the states. If you don't believe that American cows are kinda crappy, just go to Lubbock and take a deep breath, then promptly throw up.

Yeah, yeah, that's the shit right there... great stuff. Though I gotta say, after eating Kobe beef in Tokyo, no other cuts can quite compare. Really was something special.

I was offered Grits when I was in the South too. Never sampled it though. The description of it sounded unappealing.

On their own grits taste like spackle, and not even good spackle, like the kind you use to touch up a wall. Whats required to make them edible is a solid mix a bacon, eggs, salt, pepper and hot sauce.

Sometimes i go out to eat and lose my appetite if surrounded by too many fat people gorging themselves on fatty foods...

All kidding aside, that is a pretty good deterrent. "Yeah, know what? Just give me some mashed potatoes instead of fries. Thanks."

WTF!? Grits are delicious!

More for you, then. I swore off of them after having them described to me. :p

I just think every American should spend some time in a different country, and not as a tourist.

That way we can go home and complain about how the country we lived in isn't 100% like ours too

I don't think choosing mashed potatoes over fries would make much of a difference in terms of obesity. They're both loaded with carbs, and (depending on the restaurant) the portion sizes are comparable. Instead, order a salad instead and exercise 30 to 60 minutes 5 days a week. Being moderately active generally allows you get away with eating most crap, clogged arteries aside.

Yeah the restaurant you went to is called Fogo de Chao it is a Brazilian restaurant that has gauchos come around and slice meat for you. And those are all authentic Brazilian gauchos too. They have to train for 3 years in Brazil before they even get a shot at coming up here to serve in the restaurants here.

Well, a little. But I'm not that big into the whole Atkins thing. Call me old-fashioned, but I just make sure I'm not taking in an egregious amount of calories and overly greasy/fatty stuff per day. So far it's working out pretty well, three years out of school and I'm still fitting into college clothes just fine. I have a fair amount of friends that can't say the same.

So yeah, given the option, I'd take the mashed and/or baked potato (no sour cream though, that shit's nasty). At least that won't sit in the pit of my stomach if the fry cook doesn't know what he's doing.
