Which apps? Most apps are just packaged things already available on the web for your mobile device. Why worry about an app if you can just stream it from a browser? HBO GO? Hulu? Amazon Instant? Max Go? Any streaming website? Its more useful then apps. The only downside is that you would need a laptop for that functionality instead of just carrying around your phone and tablet.
It works much better if an app uses the API to only send the video stream instead of trying to do stuff through Chrome tab mirroring:

Video plays with only a bit of chop and stutter, and lips don't quite sync up with the audio, which could be maddening for some. Don't expect this to be a surefire solution for watching Hulu without a subscription.

Getting Netflix to work in WMC can sure be a pain in the ass sometimes though. It went okay on my main setup, but man the second setup was such a pain in the ass and it's hard to find answers to problems.

Yeah it totally sucks, but there's no other real option. They really need a sexy app!

didn't realize you could do full mac os mirroring using airplay via appletv. this makes chrome less of a "game changer" since i'm pretty entrenched in the apple ecosystem.

does anyone with an appletv know if if it suffers the same syncing issues described in theverg'es chromecast preview?

Asked this in the Android thread:

Holy shit, will I be able to play HBO GO in the chrome browser and stream this to my TV?

Also, will this work for any video I stream that's embedded?? Or will this be limited? This decides my purchase..

???

So it sounds like what this does is it lets approved iOS/Android apps, where the developers have put in the effort to support this, send commands to the Chromecast so it can download content from the Internet to display on my TV. It also lets me either mirror a single Chrome tab onto the TV or potentially get an optimized layout if the website supports this. So, correct me if I'm wrong, but this sounds pretty limited, and something like an Apple TV or a Miracast receiver would probably be a more feature-rich solution.

Yes but it's $11.

How much more expensive could it have been to make the stick support Miracast if they can already mirror Chrome tabs? It's disappointing that the design of this product was probably heavily influenced by Google's desire to know everything about everyone. I would've liked a product that I could've streamed pictures and videos stored locally on my laptop to.

Google wants to keep people using google development tools. You can't expect a company to be opensource just because you want it to be.

It does not open a link. It takes a live feed from your tab and mirrors it. Yes you can cast that pdf file to your TV.
To what extent? I can drag and drop a .mp4 movie in a Chrome tab and it will play (dunno about .mkv). This will stream over WiFi to the cast device? If so, pretty, pretty, pretty good.

Yup, pretty sure that will work. I think the Verge said it might be a little hitchy though.

Google still completely sucking at product launches. Surely they knew this was going to be popular! I'm in Australia if somebody wants to buy one for me and I will PayPal the money to them :)

we all knew her
I was surprised to get a shipping notification this morning from Google. Looking forward to playing around with this thing.

Mine is out for delivery now. Hopefully, it doesn't take the UPS guy all day. Impressions and testing will follow. Feel free to make requests. I have an iPad, Nexus 4 and PC. I will be testing streaming porn to my TV, first and foremost. :thumbs up:

Thinking I'd rather have something with a little more hardware to it like the AppleTV, but I like the simplicity and more compatibility that this provides.

I'm sure somehow the video will get pixelly or something from loading gifs.

The old "56k" warnings should be "Chrome" warnings.

Darn, was hoping to plug it into the service port for usb power, but android central says it won't work. I'll probably plug it into the 360, hope that provides enough power.

So you need an Internet connection for the dongle itself since it doesn't take it from the phone?

Wifi

... In either case, the simple apps makes a direct Wifi connection to your Chromecast and let you sign in to your local Wifi network using your phone, tablet or computer, a process that takes only a few minutes.

Pandora, HBOGo, Revision3, Songza are in testing for chromecast. Likely A LOT more coming. HYPE.

Good to hear. I sent an email to the Streamie Devs; hopefully they will hear the call :(

I got excited about this, I want to watch amazon video w/o turning on my xbox. I'm out of HDMI ports though, I should have bought a TV w/ more then 2. :(

Since Chromecast is kind of like Google's version of Airplay does this mean there's a chance we could actually start seeing chromecast compatible sound systems and speakers?

So we can just music from our Google play account straight from a tablet to speaker?
