Circana US Player Engagement Tracker - Top 15 Titles by Total Weekly US Players (Not Concurrent) - W/E Mar 8, 2025

This is what I see too. They will more or less merge into a PC. Which they already are, but I expect more walls to strip back and developers will end up making one version of the game that has the "Console" settings pre defined with the option for the end user to tweak in presets or maybe even finer tuned.

Basically, they will turn more into PCs but marketed as a console type experience.
I don't think you can really call them PCs if you strip away what makes PC gaming PC gaming. As you said, however, I do think that in the future, hardware will be a non-factor for games and they will attempt to make them playable on anything that has a screen. I hear GeForce Now is already quite good when it comes to latency, so perhaps in 20 or 30 years, the latency will be so negligible that there really won't be an advantage to owning a console when you can just turn on your TV and stream games directly from there and play with your controller. Same thing for PCs. You won't need dedicated hardware when you can just turn on a GeForce Now-like service and get a mid-range PC gaming experience.

At least, that's where I see the industry moving. No need for specialized hardware. Just play any title on any device with a screen.

Good luck making this kind of statement on here. While I more or less agree with you, I am often told I am thinking incorrectly
He'd be questioned because what was said is arguable. Sony figured out something that works for their platform, and if it starts to fail, they'll move to something else.

Sony hasn't seen growth since the PS2 days. Sony making more money with less consoles sales means they're just milking their existing playerbase.
I had the same thought when the PS5 is the most profitable generation to date thread here popped up and people celebrated it

Lets get excited about higher game prices, more expensive online and no price cut on the PS5

But I too am probably looking at this wrong :)

With Xbox dying, people seem to be forgetting that we're only halfway through this gen.

People even incorrectly compared 4 years of PS5 sales vs 5 years of PS4 sales.

A lot can still change, like the Astro Bot bundle that is slightly 'cheaper' ($399, OG pricing).

There's also going to be some big upcoming titles for 2025, like GTA VI, Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei.

Then there's Intergalactic and new games from GG, SSM and Insomniac (Wolverine), along with games like Marathon and Fairgame$.

Sony still has a lot in the pipeline and is even getting Xbox games on top of it.

There is doubt PS5 is a monster and I too can't wait to play DS2 and GoY on the pro

Doesn't make the statement I quoted as false though, both are true

For sure, you're not wrong. Just saying that there's still a few years left before we can see the proper results of this gen.
Just for my personal tastes I really hope the second half of this gen gets going better as outside of Astro it just seems most of the Sony games has fallen flat for me

Some big hitters coming though I have high hopes for like those mentioned

Eh, we'll see.

Apart from Ghost of Yotei and GTA VI, so far there isn't anything that really excites me yet on the PS front.
If only because we haven't seen anything from their games yet.

At least Wolverine is not my radar at all.

The new COD sucks so bad. It's not just me saying it either, and it really became more obvious to me the more I played it. I really don't know why people continue to play these games. I guess it's inertia. Hopefully Microsoft ruins this franchise like they did Halo and we can all move on.

I want Wolverine to be good I am just afraid what going to happen to it

Nah, it's actually very good.

It does need better maps

I can see people even waiting in lobbies dont want to play these junky maps, and the new ones are worse than the ones it launched with. But the live service stuff is all crap too, the battle pass is all AI generated slop, the special events are total shit, the skins are ridiculously overpriced, the game is goofy as hell, it just sucks ass.

They fixed some of the big issues in the new season but... it's really not good at all and COD players have no standards.

If you don't like you don't play but the blanket "it's not good" statement is simply not true.

The maps are not great but gunplay is fantastic and once SBMM kicks in all fun goes out the door

I can have a few good maps and by my standards a few good maps is just placing top 3 on my team and maybe grab the top spot and then I am thrown in insane speed freak lobbies that people are diving into hallways and hitting me in the head while still in mid air

But...

and COD players have no standards.

You're all missing the most important part of this whole thing, leading to you not asking the right question:

Who the fuck is still playing Watch Dogs: Legions?

So they are that successful off of an experiment! Damn, wouldn't want to fuck with them when they are REALLY in gear then!
They have clearly worked hard to build a brand. Internationally good relations with retailers, marketing everywhere, good reviews and awards (must not be cheap). So them selling high number of consoles isn't surprising.

As for games, yeah, they have worked a lot on experimental GAAS. That has nothing to do with sales though.

Holy shit look at the charts on console. No wonder everyone is hopping on the service train. You can release a good regular game and it'll get eaten up by all that F2P junk.

The only Single Player games in the top 10 on either the PS or Xbox side are Dragon Age Veilguard and Avowed.

I explained exactly why it's not good. Enjoy it if you want.

Like I said, I am in the lobby and people complain about the maps and how little fun they have playing them. We all know the incentives to keep playing are total garbage. The progression system is idiotic. The gameplay has issues (some of which were resolved in season 2). But everyone still plays it. COD has become low grade slop for idiots. And I am speaking for myself when I say this. Everyone knows it, including Activision, which is why they don't even bother to make good cosmetics for the season pass and just put out whatever ChatGPT gives them. They have as much contempt for the audience as anyone.

I know. That was my point. They tried their hand at success in a genre that just about everyone has. Some misses, one huge hit, plenty of cancellations. Their bottom line has hardly been affected!

Except this is Steam only. Fortnite and Roblox are definitely there otherwise. COD might be too, but its engagement is split between Steam and the Xbox app most likely.

Their top 10 is quite similar. All the same GAAS.

Edit: LoL and WOW are also not on Steam.
Well Steam has Baldurs 3 and Kingdom Come 2

...ps players play Dragon Age Binary edition instead

I call that a difference in taste

And if you added WOW, Roblox, COD, and Fortnite, they would both be pushed out of that list.
