Mat Piscatela / Circana: Top Selling Games on Playstation Consoles of All Time (US)

This kind of shows why the whole doom and gloom about exclusives is overblown.
To the average Playstation user it's primarily a device to play third party games. It's only on gaming forums with a lot of people that have gaming PCs that the vlue proposition of a Ps5 is entirely derived from exclusives.

Shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that these same games that we see at the top of the best sellers list every month for years dominate a list of top selling games all-time. So if the "doom and gloom" you are referring to is about Sony from a business perspective then yeah, it doesn't make a lot of sense especially considering PlayStation is making more money than it ever has. But from the perspective of those of us who just want improved output from Sony's first party studios this really doesn't have much impact on that position.

I'm talking specifically about the Ps5, not every console.
Switch, unlike PS5, is actually an exclusive driven platform so of course exclusives are important to it. The average Switch owner gets one primarily to play Nintendo games on it, which is reflected by the Switch software sales charts being completely dominated by Nintendo games. The average Ps5 owners gets one to play COD, sports games, GTA, etc, with exclusives being more of a nice occasional bonus.

Playstation was more exclusive dependent when Xbox was an actual threat, specially during the Xbox360/Ps3 era. But MS fucking up the last 2 console gens has basically allowed Playstation to become the default "high fidelity" home console.

And where are these consoles with free MP going to come from?
If it's just a pre built PC from Xbox it's going to be exponentially more expensive than a console, because they can't subsidize the hardware with a walled garden.
Its obvious ps6 gonna suffer a lot sales wise if it wont have exclusives, maybe it wont be as bad as xbox, maybe instead of predicted 120m units it will only sell 100m units, still thats plenty of dmg that can be avoided...

IMO if Ps6 is going to struggle it's because the way hardware pricing is going it's probably going to be like $700, and most of the popular games and franchises are going to keep supporting Ps5 for the next 15 years. In that sense I do think Sony could benefit from having some exclusives, because if the only appeal of the Ps6 is playing the same games with better performance for a premium price it's not going to be flying off the shelves.

Then again if they can have a big active userbase between Ps4, ps5 and Ps6 I don't know how much they'll care. Their real business is software and services, not hardware.

Yeah I understand wanting more and better games from Sony, I do too.
I'm primarily talking about the doom and gloom regarding Playstation as a business
