Thanks. When I get home I need to see if I can fix my traffic. I just wish normal highways and onramps were available from the start just to help plan things for the future.

One-way roads need to be drawn in the correct direction.

I will name my first born after you! Thanks to you and hellmonkey, that fixed it

I don't wish to high jack the thread so mods feel free to edit, or send me a message and I will edit after I come home tonight (about 11pm pst). I have tried everything I can find on how to fix black screen issues a list for you enjoyment.

I tried

running vcredist_x64.exe in the game folder
setting custom width/height to -h 400 w-800
verified cache man many times
Started steam in admin mode
disabled steam overlay
Restarted steam
Restarted pc with nothing, but game trying to run

To give an idea of how many times I have tried, I have "played" a total of 96 mins by starting and waiting an average of 3 to 4 minutes on a plain black screen with cursor.

I write this mostly to make myself feel better and be less frustrated with the game not working. The good news is the developers do know about the issue as the have posted something on steam forums on how to fix this issue (does not work for me) so hopefully a patch comes out soon.

Anyone know if there's any point to making multiple harbors?

Do more boats come when you plop down multiple harbors or will the boats just spread out over them?

So oil and ore deposits deplete... for some reason it did not occur to me that this would happen and it caught me off guard.

Put down a tree and then turn the area into forestry. It creates a LOT of timber lorries though.

EDIT: Welp, my city is turning into a mess. Might make a new one.

Did somebody already unlock all unique buildings? Some are a real pain in the arse, I just can't get 50% crime rate and 20% health without the city dying out real fast and thus fixing the rate itself >_<

Are some glitched? I think it's the shopping one, it sits at -1. Unless I'm totally misunderstanding how that one unlocks.

This is correct, you have to get to negative money, so -1 Dollar. Shopping as in throwing money out until you have none.

My city went through a real estate bubble bursting, land value plummeted even though it was still showing up as being highish (guess not good enough for citizens though) and most of my original residential area was abandoned along with some near by commercial and I started losing money as over a third of my population left the city since people were leaving anyway I took the opportunity to do some rezoning and upgrading/tweaking my roads. After I was done it rebounded strongly. I put greater separation between my residential and commercial with a buffer of trees to keep down some of the noise pollution. I also tinkered with my industry, haven't really paid a ton of attention but I think I've lowered traffic a fair bit by moving the train cargo depot further north onto a one way loop off the highway and then back on at the end.

Speaking of industry I think they need to add a high tech level that would attract higher educated people unless that's what happens when industry levels up.

Also, it took me way too long to realize this but, I had put down four landfills to keep up with the trash and eventually an incinerator with each of them because I was thinking trash was going to landfills and then to the incinerator and it still seems they prioritize the landfill so I figured that's how it worked. Well I'm an idiot because I finally actually looked at the trash info for my landfills and incinerators I saw I was misreading the maximum capacity (they need to add commas IMO) and they were all way below it because it was getting divided between like 10 places to dump trash with my four landfills and five or six incinerators I had running. Sooo after realizing this I've been emptying the landfills, I have one left to bulldoze and I'll just be using incinerators exclusively. How long does pollution from landfills stick around? I imagine it works the same way with cemeteries and crematoriums so I'm going to be removing my cemeteries too.

figured out why I had traffic problems... one of my 1 way roads weren't being used because I put it on backwards :/

I feel like some of these tools could be better.

Yeah, it would be nice if there was a tool to just flip a one way road instead of having to redo it, it's a pain sometimes when making a long one with no guide.

Holy shit it's already 11PM.

So, I rather like my new district (and that Elevated Pedestrian Roundabout from the workshop is really nice).

Spent half an hour trying to fix my traffic in my industrial zone after putting in a cargo train station with somwhat alright results:
... only to notice afterwards that the mineral deposit is empty, wich is whythe industry doesn't rebuild (which probably helped my traffic problems more than me playing around with highways and one ways).
What can I do with this industrial zone then? Does the cargo train station has any use if I siimply build offices over there?

(don't enlarge the pictures if you value your eyes; I'm playing on low settings @720p until my new CG arrives)

Is there any way I can remedy these traffic problems or do I need to restart? (first city problems)

It seems to be getting worse, especially on entry from the highway. I've tried buying areas elsewhere to create my own entries and exits from the highway, but they all still seem to pile in from that one on the right.

First time messing around with the bus system. What does this symbol mean? Do I need to end my route or can I just leave it as is?

EDIT: The tool tip when you open the bus menu specifically states, "Bus lines need to form a circle!"

So that answers that question.

Routes have to be complete loops. I believe that icon is showing that route being incomplete.

You definitvely have to redo your highway connection, it's too small.
Also, that connection needs direct access to the rest of your city. Right now all your traffic has to go through very small roads, that can't go well.
For the red part on the center of your screen, I'd do a roundabout.

Note however that I'm not necessarly the best person to talk about traffic problems:

Actually I take back what I said about gaming the crime rate. I need to find the right balance. I have to get them unhappy, but not so unhappy that they all leave.

My crime goes up to 30, but then goes back down because all the buildings go abandoned.

Goddamn city stalled at around 70k. Sometimes goes below because there are more people dying than being born (and coming into town) but it never goes above. Don't know what to do anymore. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Went through a rough time changing some of my industry (Oil) but now everything seems fine (income wise). I have a lot of highly educated people and would like to create a little town somewhere to house uneducated people to help with other kind of work but there's simply no demand for housing. Not a single house is built (neither are offices for more educated people).

I guess I'll make a mountain map and make a more rural city now until I want to pick this one up again.

EDIT: Btw, a tree brush mod is here. http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=406723376

Seems like there is a limit to how many trees can be placed. :\

Yeah going to redo mine as well, some are just some bad loops rather than solid routes.

Hard to implement a sub line too after you get a nice city going. I'm going to rezone quite a few places.

Oh yeah, one question: can I empty my garbage dumps into my incenarator? If yes, how do I do it?
All my dumps are full, but each one has an incenarator right next to it... In my mind, the garbage dump would have picked up the trash, and the incinerator would have picked up the trash from the dumps to burn it down.

Any chance we can get an official topic for people to help bring the best Steam Workshop mods to the forefront of gaffers attention and to discuss them, post screens, etc?

Seems like it could be very useful considering the absolute flood of things on the workshop already for this game.

There's an "empty dump" button in the popup when you click each garbage dump. I think the dump has to be "on" to empty out its garbage, and it helps if you've got incinerators nearby to empty things quicker. If you've got a dump that's not full, I think they might default to moving the trash there before the incinerator.

Yes: Click "Empty" on the landfill (or some option like that).

I did that once, but I noticed only roughly half of the trucks emptying the dumps where going to the incinerator; the others where going to another dump...
So to do what I think would happen, I'd have to constantly micromange them? doesn't sound very thrilling.

Edit: also, I asked in another post: what to do with an industry that depleted the ressources it was standing on? Simply build offices?

I saw that too, which is why I was trying to make my citizens unhappy. But they all just left town instead lol.

Just do it until you have no landfills left. Once emptied, delete them, I only use incinerators.

As for the industry, you can make it a normal goods industry, simply eliminate the specialization for that district. You don't have to delete anything, the buildings will go down automatically once you change the industry type and new ones will begin construction.

Don't mean to be a broken record, but my biggest gripe is definitely the difficulty and lack of micromanagement/financial metagame.

Is it easy for mods to make new rules/logic for this game? I know people love to build cities, but I think playing the role of a mayor and doing paperwork is half the fun of a city builder.

Does colossal make DLC that supports new gameplay content like this?

Ok thanks.
Well, bedtime. Hopefully I'll get my new GPU tommorow, so i can actually see something in the UI (it's incredibly blurry in 720p).

You can get a sense of what you can do with mods here:

http://www.skylineswiki.com/Modding_API

There's sections on modifying economy stuff, so I wouldn't be surprised if we see what you're asking for.

As for DLC plans, I wouldn't be surprised if we see major expansion pack type of updates alongside the more minor cosmetic stuff.
