Civilization 6 announced, out October 21st

Hmmm...Greece is always one of my favorites to play (just because it's cool as fuck, even if Civ doesn't represent the sort of Greek history I'm interested in too well) but what's the wildcard thing mentioned? And what's it got to do with the Republic?

Pericles ability is good. Should bring in gold and ships too, then he'd be really Delian league Civ :).

Edit: what I really want is a good peloponesian war strategy game, tbh. Got plenty to scratch my Byzantine itch.

Does every country in the game have a character to represent them, or is it only select countries?

Every playable country (refereed to as a "civ", and they can settle new land) does have a character. All the unplayable countries do not (refereed to as "city-states", and they can't settle new land)

That would have been an interesting choice, definitely one not many people would have considered.

I guess the two drawbacks are a relative lack of name recognition and a dearth of biographical information. The former is not such an issue for Civ given that the series hardly needs the most famous Greek leader to sell (and we're still talking about a very famous figure). The latter might make it a little tougher to settle on a fun personality or unique ability.

One dark-horse candidate that would bring good name recognition and tons of color would be Alcibiades. Firaxis could draw him up drunk, beautiful, and utterly untrustworthy in diplomatic affairs.

Lol. I like that. I mean there are so many charismatic 'traitor' types you could do, but Alcibiades is a good choice.

Edit:

The thing is that so much of this sort of doesn't work with the nature of Civ. I mean, they're giving Pericles an imperial power that benefits from non-Greek cities when it really just emulated how the 'Athenian Empire' existed. Polis politics just doesn't go with Civ.

Of course in Civ you're always simulating some sort of autocrat with a modern state apparatus.

Sorry if this has been answered earlier, but have Firaxis said anything about preserving the hotseat mode in Civ VI? It is a type of multiplayer I very much enjoy with a few friends but it could be seen as a bit archaic in nature and I am always worried that it will be quietly removed from most modern 4x games.

Yeah. I want PBEM too. I know it's not real popular these days, but it's really the only way me, my brother and brother-in-law can play a Civ game.

I know it's unlikely, but do we think they may release a 100 turn demo like they did before Civ V released? Can't believe we're 5ish weeks from launch!

That would be awesome, but man I don't even remember a demo for Civ V. I mean I bought it like two days after it came out, but yeah a demo of Civ 6 would be sweet.

Five weeks, it sure is close!

Wildcard slot are policy slots in Civ VI that allows any kind of policy (military, economic, diplomatic) into it. There are also unique "wildcard policies" that can only be slotted into wildcard slots.

Basically Greeks get an extra slot for any policy since they gain a free wildcard slot.

I would love for you to be able to join me on this ride. Really digging Civ VI so far from the demo I had.
My heart :(

Is there Beyond Earth vibe to the game? I remember being unreasonably excited for more Civ and bought that without too much thought. Possibly the most disappointing game since Sim City.

I honestly didn't bang with Beyond Earth. Honestly, I've said this before, it feels a bit more like Endless Legend, albeit without the hard restrictions on how you have to build your city to maximize growth.

But even right there, I'm comparing a game that I've poured enough time into to see the frayed edges on the fringes, to a game I've played a 100 turns on. I think Civ VI is off to a good start at least, better than Civ V was.

A really minor nitpick. Why is the amphitheatre 180 degrees?! That's a Roman design. Anyone who has been to Greece and paid attention will know that Greek amphitheatres are always >180 degrees large.

Because they're borrowing the "generic" civ amphitheatre building for the district.

Didn't want to create a thread for that but I will play a game of civ5 this week-end with two of my friend, one who play venise and one who will play austrian. Since these two civilization focus on city states, im looking for the best warmonger to capture or destroy city-states early on, any suggestion?

Mongolia has a bonus vs city states, plus Keshiks are one of the best uniques around.

I'll be honest, I was hoping for something bolder, like a semi-modern Greek leader, but just not having Alexander is pretty good.
Most post antiquity Greek leaders fall under the inevitable Byzantine DLC faction or post Ottoman Greece which isn't as marketable.
I would love to see Kolokotronis as an alternate leader with his own unique latter game units.

Man.. I'm planning on jumping into this series finally (I already bought Civ 6, just waiting for the download).. But that Civ V complete bundle for $14 is awfully tempting. I just don't want to jump into it for a few weeks and then drop it for Civ VI. What do you guys think?

Content / new player experience / overall experience etc, can you imagine Civ V being better to play even after Civ VI comes out?

On the one hand, it's real good, and at that price, you can pretty easily play it enough for the purchase to be "worth it" even if you stop playing the second Civ VI releases.

On the other hand, if you haven't played the series at all before, you'll learn a bunch of stuff that may or may not directly apply with the new one. If you haven't really played any games of this type before, a little "practice" with V will probably be more beneficial than not, but if you've played enough of this genre to where learning Civ won't be too much of a worry, you'll probably have a harder time if you train your brain on V and then switch right to VI? Hard to say since I've played every game in the series, but I've deliberately not played V lately so I won't be too used to it when I start VI.

Ehh, screw it. Bought! What a steal at 91% off.

I actually kind of like the way this game looks more than VI, but I get that it is a stylistic thing. Planning listening to a lot of podcasts and audiobooks while I play this.

Congrats!

Now once you get the feel of the game, you'll waste 90% of the time rerolling maps because you didn't get the perfect hills with bunch of resources facing the coast start. :P

This won't happen for awhile.. I'm going in pretty much completely blind :)

I've been eyeing this series for awhile. I like the idea of crusader kings, but it's a little too obtuse. I loved AoE when I was a kid, but dislike the stress of feeling like I'm not making decisions or clicks fast enough.

I was incredibly relieved when I found out that was acceptable behavior... felt like cheating lol. Now my Egypt games can actually play properly!

wait do people actually do this

That option in the menu is there for a reason!!!11

:D

I want a nice place to start a new game, and I restart until I feel comfortable.

In older civ games (2 I think?) we always ended the game, because you could see the world map then, and decided if we take that lol

I don't care what others do, but I try not to reroll. I usually randomize civs too and whatnot. Otherwise, I feel like I get in a rut of just playing in my comfort zone.

I also use the IGE mod to reduce micromanagement, but I realize that's super cheaty. Religious war? Fuck the missionary babysitting, I just go into IGE to change the city's religion and zero out my faith.

I re-roll all the time till I get a perfect large island all to my self. I like building things, not going to war. I play like Sid Meier says he plays.
