Civilization II

Actually, fancy you mention that. Last night I dove into Civ III again on a complete whim when I realized there was a Mac version. Fucking genius game (just as Civ II was).

*Generic statement of curiousity as to whether or not anyone thinks IV will be good*

Careful, there are addicts who read this board.

I don't think I can handle another Civ relapse...

Rome: Total War is supplying me with much turn based love at the moment. I can recomend it to anyone who is a fan of that type of gameplay.

I've been getting into Alpha Centauri recently. It's a far better sequel to CivII than CivIII is.

Civ2 was the ultimate, Civ3 was good but all the border stuff made it impossible to concentrate on a few cities rather than just spreading as quickly as possible.

Oh man i hope I cant find my Civ 2 CD, I dont think id survive a relapse.

Civ 2 is beign ported to the n-gage! !

the game is so great, civ 3 was too slow in comparison and tried to stop you from building a big empire quick, which i what made civ2 so fun!, just having a massive empire 0wning all the d00dz!

I thought Alpha Centauri kicked ass, but felt like an entirely different game. The interface doesn't hold up really well either (not that Civ III's is all that great).

You're right about Civ3, though. Rapid expansion is the name of the game until the borders fill up, then it gets fun.

But damn, now I just wanna go play AC again. Playing as the University dude against other players with decent AI was the titty monster.

I liked Civ 2 better than 3. I swear there was some rediculous defense stuff going on in 3, where I would surround a town with 8 (stronger) guys vs their 2 and lose.

It's funny, I prefered 2 to 3, but I have a bitch of a time going back to 2 after playing 3 so much. Regardless, I'm trying to pretend that Civ IV isn't coming out this year.

I think that the reason behind that is that Civ 3 is just Civ 2 with better grafics, nothing really new.

I dunno, personally I thought that horrendously slow 5minute turns(on 1Ghz cpus) were a big novelty in Civ3. :\

I realize I sound like a complete retard by bothering to ask, but does anyone know whether a Mac versoin will be released by year's end (if at all?).

I love Civ II, one of my favorite games. Civ 3 however... just too much to concentrate on. It's far too slow of a game.

Um no, that is totally incorrect. Civ 3 had totally new systems such as borders, culture, and trade resources that weren't present in Civ 2 at all. Some of them worked, some of them didn't, but saying that Civ 3 is no more than graphics update is patently false.

What really killed Civ 3 for me was the Phalanx defeating Tank syndrome of ancient units winning against modern ones. This occurred way to often, especially if the ancient unit was in a defensive position. Sid's excuse was that he felt that the advantage of higher technology was to great, making research always a priority, and players should be forced to make a decision between research and other priorities. But what really happened was that by minimizing the qualitative advantage the units could have, it all became unbalanced in favor of a quantitative advantage, with larger armies being difficult to beat even with a large tech difference. It was particularly puzzling to me as this flaw had been removed when going from Civ 1 to Civ 2, only to be re-introduced in Civ 3.

I hope that things are better in this regard for Civ 4, but the talk of simplified unit stats doesn't have me very hopeful.

I never really could love AC like I did the Civ games. I think it has to do with the fact that in Civ you go from stone tools and the wheel to nuclear weapons and a starship. In AC you go from advanced sci-fi weapons to - more advanced sci-fi weapons! I never got the feeling that my civ in AC had progressed in the same way it did in the Civ games. The ecological preaching didn't sit that well with me either.

Alpha Centauri is ugly as fuck, that's the main difference between it and Civ2/3. There are also a couple of other things I did't like, like how air units seem to be too powerful and regular units too boring. I actually disliked the fact that you could build cities on water (the whole map is full of cities later in the game). Planet busters were cool, and I really liked the techs and projects.

Organic Superlubricant - Organic Superlube? Oh, it's great stuff, great stuff. You really have to keep an eye on it, though--it'll try and slide away from you the first chance it gets.

Probability Mechanics - Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded.

Damn you guys, I feared to step into this thread, but now I'm afraid I have to go look for both CIV II and AC again... Fortunately, CIV III is only 5.99 Euro at the moment, so I'll probably have that one this week.

I wasted so much time on Civ 2. Amazing game. I bought Civ 3 last year, and while it's good, it seems like the same game with a (very nice) face lift. Sure, there are some gameplay improvements and additions in some areas, but there are also subtractions in others. As a result I didn't spend nearly as much time on it as it felt like I'd already played it thousands of times.

Civ 4 really, REALLY, needs a complete overhaul when it comes to diplomacy and trade agreements. I mean seriously, these areas are so limited/flawed/broken, and they should be two of the focuses for the series. Also, Civ 4 looks like shit graphically. Not only is the 3d technically shite, but the style is fucked.
