CM Punk signs with UFC

I'm aware of how the contract situation works in UFC...I didn't mean they would directly get a cut of the increased buys but if business is up, then it's silly to argue that none of the other fighters will benefit from that in the long run.

We're doing well, so here's more money?

Without a viable alternative they'll take their 8k/8k and like it, regardless of how the business is doing.

It's a benefit to those with a revenue cut, I guess?

If they can get Chael out of retirement, a Punk vs Chael feud writes itself. Would Punk be able to fight Jon Jones?

Before anyone dismisses this, Ogawa fought Freddy in front of about 80k screaming marks who believed he had a chance.

Who can say? It's a new day.

Don't know why those wrasslin' guys think they can just transition over to MMA and be successful. I mean they're definitely terrific athletes, but MMA is a whole different ballgame. Shit, Lesner got his insides kicked out by Overeem. That should make any WWE guy skip the UFC and try to make a run for Hollywood.

To be fair to Lesnar, Overeem is a goddamn roid monster

Remember when people said ufc was going to bigger than Boxing. That was funny.

To be fair, specifically in the United States nowadays it probably is. That has more to do with the US not having a badass hw champ than anything else, tho. Ufc could probably benefit a bit from Dana not being on top of absolutely everything.

Oh hey, wikipedia to the rescue.

Also prolly related to Pacquiao's fight selling like shit.

Sakuraba says hi.

Seriously I don't think anyone believes they can just step in the ring and be successful. Anyone willing to do it knows it takes a lot of work and and effort No harm trying though is there?

Remember Yuji Nagata being fed to the wolves in Fedor and Cro Crop by his boss Antonio Inoki and agreed to it as he genuinely believed it would help NJPW. Think about that for a second, that's like cm punk fighting next week against the #1 fighter in the world.

Not sure. It seemed to peak and then decline pretty quickly. They don't really hit the high PPV numbers anymore and haven't managed to take that Latino and Black male demographic from Boxing.

I remember Dana White after the Mayweather v De La Hoya fight claiming the record buyrate would hurt Boxing as the fight was so bad (it wasn't that bad at all).

I think the ufc didn't help themselves when they started running so many shows.

Welp, I'll be watching his debut in UFC then. Hope he knows what he's doing.

I was hoping he'd go for movies or a TV show instead. Didn't think he'd actually go for UFC at his age.

Lol. DiscoJon does it again!

That's not how it works. A very small percentage of fighters have any claim on pay-per-view revenue, and the entire roster is now tied to a tiered sponsorship deal with Reebok. They aren't eating off this unless they beat CM Punk.

How they gonna beat a dude who held the World title for 434 days?

He's going to get crushed, what scrub is Dana going to feed him for an easy win? Unless Punk wins its going to make Dana look foolish

For me my interest in mma seemed to decline when Pride died. Initially I kept following the sport via ufc but for whatever reason over the last couple years I watched less and less and now nothing.

Hope punk goes well but he is the wrong side of 30 and his body has taken beating for a decade.

Nobihuko Takada of UWFI fame was by many accounts a beast in the gym and could grapple with anyone but by the time he started in Pride he was old and again beaten up from pro-wrestling.

Congratulations on missing out on some of the best fight in combat sport of all time.

It's a catch 22 though, because if you take green as shit Punk and give him green as shit opponent you likely end up with a terrible, boring, TUF tryouts level fight, only on a $60 PPV. Even if Punk wins it likely won't be pretty and will come off really badly. there is a reason most guys' first fights are not on tv.

Most guys don't have the name value of Punk. It's going to be a spectacle fight, people will be buying it to see Punk have a "real" fight because it's Punk, not because it will be a technical masterpiece. Look at this thread, look at all the people who have said they'll watch the event his fight is on. There will be plenty of bald tattooed up BJJ guys in shorts going at it that night that one "bad" match isn't going to ruin the show (not that the pro wrestling fans that will be tuning in for Punk would know a "good" MMA fight from a "bad" one).

It's just like pro wrestling in this regard, if it draws it's a good match, if it doesn't it doesn't matter how good at BJJ the fighters are, it's a bad fight.

I don't doubt that, but if the fight is garbage and Punk looks like a sloppy amateur, it's going to be a lot harder to sell fight number 2 and so on.
