CM Punk signs with UFC

Seems like some people are taking this a tad too serious. Unknown fighters come and go, nobody panics. One little millionaire wrestler signs on and everybody loses their mind!

Its not going to kill ufc, it's not going to save it. Is it disrespecting the sport? Who knows. He's clearly taking it pretty seriously. I also don't see how wanting to do local training makes him an entitled prick. He literally just did 10+ years of non stop traveling across the world. Hell, one year is probably more than everyone in this thread combined.

I honestly don't see him having major success at ufc. But I'm not going to hate the dude just because he has the resources to do whatever the fuck he wants.

The long term issues are not on Punk, that's on Dana and the UFC. THey are the ones responsible for the brand and the long term success of MMA. I think it's fair to point out Punk's hypocrisy when he spent a large part of the Colt Cobana podcast raging about "part timers" in the WWE and how they stole the spot he worked hard for just because they were big names and now he's doing that in both comics and MMA. Be interested in seeing someone bring that up to him for a comment if they haven't already.

Some kernals of hard truth in that Nate Diaz 2-0-9 rant. "THis guy doesn't GET to fight me" and "You put an amateur in the UFC and we're all amateurs".

At the end of the day, its nothing more than a cash grab for a struggling UFC.

Pay Phil a shit load of money and hope like hell people pay to watch. In todays market of torrents and streams - good luck with that unless they put him in with a good fighter. If its some no namer, no one will care.

Its all short term and I dont think anything is good is gonna come out of the fight.

Huh?

He ranted about part timers coming in, winning, then leaving, which is a whole different kettle of fish - presumably if punk wins then he's staying in the ufc for a while.

And he'll be fighting scrubs as talented as he is. Which is not much considering the zero experience he has and the sole fact that Dana white is making it special just for him by signing in another guy that doesn't deserve it with a similar amount of experience.

He also complained about part-timers getting "his" spot. Like Rock getting the main event at Wrestlemania. Well now he is taking someone elses spot headlining a PPV. Or he is taking some other writer's spot on a comic book.

Punk is doing the same amount of work as everyone else though. There isn't some UFC house show in Green Bay that UFC full-timers are toiling on that he gets to skip. As much as people want to compare them, wrestling and UFC don't have the same structure.

Understatement of the century.

Guy is just salty as hell. Like i said, people will eat crow over Punk.

Even if he would win, a win versus a opponent that is meant to be accomodated just for him is certainly not a feat big enough for anyone to eat crow.
The cage he's getting in is of the biggest mma organisation, the one he will be fighting against will be of no such thing, he'll be a newcomer too and will have skills simlar to that enterntainement Wrestling fellow.
I honestly wouldn't be suprised if he comes with half assed kicking techniques, wide looping hands, and even worst defence to boot.

he will have rolled around for 6 months with a guy named Gracie while other guys busted their ass on the mma equivalent of "house shows" (lesser MMA organizations and county fairs) for years to get to the same spot. How is he doing the same amount of work? Guys like Nate Diaz have the same reason to be upset with him that he had to be upset that Rock or Miz stole his Wrestlemania main event dream.

Kinda agree, it's the same thing going on in WWE for decades. But on the other hand, in UFC you can fight your way to the top. And UFC is dying. They need somebody like Punk a lot more than their own fighters stepping up I feel. Though I guess both would the best.

NFL, NBA will always go on regardless. (I'm not American, but I'm pretty sure those are giant, giant things that won't really go away) So they don't really need the star power like UFC does right?

But he's not going to be a part timer if he ends up being any good. If the Rock was coming back for good...

The guys in the prelims have to work several years of fights just to get on the PPV card and at that point they still aren't paid the same as Punk. It's even worse than a part timer going over and leaving after Wrestlemania.

It's dumb for the sport, but smart for the business. Controversy creates cash.

No one is going to stop watching the UFC just because a former pro wrestler has a throwaway fight against some tin can, especially if the card has other more interesting fights they care about. A decent chunk of people will start, though. The math makes that pretty obviously profitable.

He also said that he now sees how the business works and that he wants to be that part time guy. I don't think he would deny that this is what he's doing now. It's just good business to be the part timer instead of killing yourself for no reward.

Fucking LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLL at Dana's reasoning he gives for signing Punk:

He and I have become friends and he told me, ‘I’ve achieved some cool things in my life and I want to try the UFC. It’s not like I’m young enough to fight my way up in the smaller leagues. I’d like to come in and give it a shot and see what I got,’"

All you have to do to get a fight in the UFC is become friends with Dana. That's actually worse than just saying it's a publicity stunt.

who is going to sell more ppv's?

They do to the same amount of work for UFC. Punk will do the camp, do the promotion work, then do the fight. Hypothetical magical fairness doesn't matter.

Sure, be friends with Dana, have a couple million twitter followers, have crossover appeal from another audience where you are a draw, and actually want to fight in the UFC.

Whether you think he will get creamed or not, the WWE are fucking fuming about this. If Punk can bring the typical bravado and ego that is a centrepiece of the WWE's appeal (or at least used to be before the dark times) to the UFC while also being somewhat competitive, who knows how many more wrestlers will consider UFC.

I hope he learns quickly, it would be bad for him and the image of other UFC fighters if he can't compete at their level.

CM Punk's UFC debut has been slightly delayed because of a shoulder injury, according to the former WWE star's head coach, Duke Roufus.

Punk, birth name Phil Brooks, has been sidelined for several weeks after "tweaking" the shoulder during a scramble in training. He is scheduled to see a physician on Oct. 14, at which point he could be cleared to return to the gym.

The 36-year-old signed a deal to compete with the UFC in December, despite no experience in mixed martial arts. He's preparing for his debut at Roufusport Academy in Milwaukee, the longtime home of former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis.

"He got caught in a scramble, so right now he's taking a little time off," Roufus told ESPN.com. "He was doing great before that. His progress has been good. He's got a great attitude and he's a hard worker. He got a place in Milwaukee where he lives all week when he's here training, so he's in it to win it.

"Our biggest thing is we want him to be 101 percent before [we resuming training]. We don't have a hard date for his fight to force the issue, so making sure he's completely healthy is possible."

Roufus has repeatedly stated he wants Punk completely prepared before stepping into the Octagon for the first time. When asked how close Punk is to that point, Roufus responded, "50 percent."

"He's about at 50 percent," Roufus said. "But that being said, remember that my 100 percent is a very well-prepared person.

"The UFC will probably book him a fight three to four months in advance -- a guy of his magnitude. We're probably looking at a fight in the next six to 10 months. The injury throws us back one month. We had a ballpark. We were looking at mid- to late-spring. Now, we'll just have to see how he comes back from the injury."
