The Nintendo Game Boy has ruled the portable gaming roost for years, but some new and future products have the current champ in the crosshairs. Which of these portables will keep your thumbs twitching in 2005 and beyond?

That sure seems like a stupid thing to say with the GBA:SP outselling the PSP in Japan and with the system still putting up fantastic numbers here in the US. Will the DS and the PSP really kill off the GBA in 2005? Didn't the GameBoy Color continue to sell after the GBA was released?
 
They Game Boy has been dead for years.

Now the Game Boy Advance SP is another story, as it is still very much alive.
 
thing is, i love the GBA, and i was one of the people who was saying "pfff, yeah, but it won't just die!"

and whilst that is DEFINITELY still true, i personally have no desire at all to play the GBA now.
 
GBASP will be around for quite a while still. I actually think it'll outlast the DS in the long run (as GBA2 will be the next successor probably sometime in 2007). It's just a well thought out (size of the unit), balanced (graphics/battery life) and durable.

A fancy screen and 3D graphics from 1999 are no match for the power of 2D gaming goodness such as Fire Emblem. :D

I would be in heaven if someone would release a new all 2D console with modern technology in it. The console couldn't cost that much, probably 90% of the cost would be in ram anyways.
 
Mmmm, I can agree to the extent that all the major development talent is moving over to the two new handhelds.

In a year or so, GBA will be "alive" in the same way that the PSOne was alive in 2001-2004. Games will still be released and systems will still be sold, but nothing high profile -- just budget crap and licensed crap tailored to children, ultra-casual gamers, and other people who have no ability to discern quality. Oh....and EA crap too. Aren't they still releasing PSOne versions of Madden? :lol

People might not be able to trade in their PSOne for a PStwo, but they'll be damned if they're gonna miss out on paying $50 for the world's worst version of Madden 2005.

Or, I suppose, being in Japan, you've already got the games that we're waiting for. WW Twisted, Zelda, Fire Emblem VIII...

GBA will still be alive next year, but I think chances of it lasting as a viable platform for much beyond 2005 are slim. The DS launching so well pretty much seals the deal. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if the DS is a success, say 10 million worldwide by the end of 2005, then it will be the de facto new Nintendo handheld, Gameboy name or not, and they'll be hard pressed to put a new handheld before late 2007 at the earliest, probably later, without facing a backlash.

Is that because of PSP or DS? If anything, because of my DS, i've been playing GBA games more... on my SP. The screen and speakers are nicer on the DS, but the button cluster is smaller, the SP is more pocketable, and the system just doesn't feel as comfortable.
 
the gameboy is more alive now, and will continue to be more alive than over half of the systems they listed there will ever be....

Pros: Should prove to be good graphicly ...good third party support
Cons: Bigger then an xbox controler, To exspensive, Its a sony product so it should have some sort of DRM/check out scheme that will limit its appeal

Cons: i'm not gonna rebuy all my movies and music on umd format, the psp is gonna be way tooo pricy, plus you have to buy all the accesories separate

anyone who honestly thinks that once the psp hits full swing as far as production goes DS will still outsell it is just dumb. sorry. i mean seriously. its comparing ford aspire to a ferrari and for some crackpot reason the dealer is offering you the ferrari for $20-$50 more. DS is doomed. theres no arguing it.

the amazing thing is the number of kids i've seen who have PSPs...

it's amazing that people think the price is too high. 19800 yen for a games machine, a memory stick media playback system that (frankly) shits all over the Sony dedicated machine (and all others by the look of it) which retails at 68,000 yen.

I honestly don't know how sony are doing it, but god bless for it.

Now in the process of sticking a load of manga on to my memory stick along with a few episodes of Gantz/Samurai Champloo. All that remains is someone to get custom software running off the stick and then that puts the tin hat on the PSP shaping up to be one of the best games machine i've ever had (provided we get more quality releases, but so far, it's very promising).

I don't think the DS is doomed though - GBA backwards compatability is a big factor, and the fact that there a lots of great ideas already more than justifies it's success.

As i said in the G4TV interview - it's very difficult to compare the two, one is focused on power, the other is coming from an "ideas" background. Neither will kill the other.
 
How the hell does stupid shit like this get approved? I wrote for a god damn fansite and I'd never even think of declaring something like THE GAME BOY IS DEAD because Nintendo didn't use the moniker for their newest handheld which is completely different from the game boy line fucking IDIOTS hdifjsdhf

I just wonder what can nintendo do to the next gameboy. I don't think it does matter even if it can graphic near GC (while psp already display PS2 like graphic), a big screen (psp already get one) and movie playable (psp already do this).
p.s. i got a nds this christmas and love it much.
 
yup. died the moment the psp came out. i love the gba, but i can't stand to look at mine anymore. there are still some gba games i mean to play, but i'll probably have to use the gb player or an emulator.

If XBOX were the equivalent of Xenon or PS3 and it came out within days of the PS2 launch, you'd have a point. (And yes, MS would have completely taken over in such a situation)

No, NDS can win. As for now, we don't know if it will, but it definitely CAN (imho with slightly good chances).

What if it can play GameCube games? I'd like it to be just a portable that plays all GB/GBC/GBA and GC games, two slots, one for GB cartridges and one to insert GC disks. New games for this magical Gameboy will come out on GC disks, which can also be played on GC, thus giving the GC a 10 year + lifespan as well! I can dream...

it's difficult (while not impossible). I think the improvement of technology may able to do so (at least in someday). but, how can they put all the controller's buttons, analogy stick ... to it and still make it small (portable)? besides, when u compare the nds and psp (they are difficult and target on different user group) but it's easy to figure out the sony's design (the form factor) is more attractive than nintendo (nds's buttons is too small, the digital pad is not well design (easy to put to other direction when u tab the down arrow when playing the band brothers)

anyone who thinks the PSP is going to outsell the DS and somehow destroy it is dumb.

only one place the PSP will beat the DS, and thats in Europe(even more so the UK).

I think the GameBoy brand name will show up again as soon as the DS sales starts to die, which will be in 2-3 years..

after all Nintendo kept themselves in the "safe side" by saying its (DS) a 3rd pillar, so when they announce GBNext in a short period of time, ppl won't go crazy...
