CoD2 + ATI Radeon 850 XT

Running off of Custom Firmware
Hi folks. Today I finally decided to install CoD2 on my rig, since I've never played it before. I updated my ATI drivers and whatnot, of course. About 10 mins into the game, I get a warning from my control panel that my video card is overheating!!

WTF? Please help.
 
Check and see if your heatsink/fan on GPU is working correctly. I have a GF 6800GT and my fan grill occasionally gets covered with dust... You might want to check and make sure your fan is working.

A GPU shouldn't overheat unless there's a problem like that. And it's perfectly normal that you wouldn't notice it until something pushes your card... AOE3 did the same thing for me...
 
There's warm air coming OUT of the back of the comp, so I imagine the fan's working! I've had the comp for about a year, and never really tried to run any heavy duty games.

It wouldn't have anything to do with upping the graphics settings, right? I think I should be able to run CoD2 mostly or totally maxed out!

Edit - Wouldn't the Catalyst software TELL me if a fan wasn't working?
 
Reminds me of my own woes... PC gaming has benn getting on my nerves lately. More than ever in fact.

New consoles are apparently dealing with the same issue.

Should I contact Dell, then?

Well, I hover over the ATI icon in my system tray, and it says 0 degrees... but that's can't be right, can it? Said it before I ran the game, saying it now that I'm re-testing the game.
 
few things to check from years of personal experience

1. dust
dust can block up the airwys of heatsinks and shit make sure it is free of dust

2. pc too close ot the wall
if teh exhaust fan blows directly into a wall it will not ventilate properly

3. add a top vent on yoru pc case
since heat rises, a top fan blowing up can rduce case temps drastically

if it is still overheating i woudl then return the card or else change the alarm temperature setting in the ATI config if u really think it is at an ok temp
 
Yeah, I've had it for a year, so I guess next weekend I'll open it up and de-dust it, so to speak. The case the PC came in has back and top vents, and both are clear. It's as far from the wall as I could get it without disconnecting anything... Perhaps I'll try to redo my wires in order to give it more slack. It's definitely not completely against any wall, however.

As for the temp... I'm afraid that my Catalyst software isn't even reading it right. Why else would it still show as 0 degrees?

that tells me you updated drivers arent telling you the right temp readings...I have never used those little programs vendors send with their stuff.....If you disable the temp stuff, does the game run find? If your video card is ovrheating for real, it should lockup your machine or have mega glitches onscreen.

try it without the temp monitor on...see how it goes...or get the x360 version since you own one of thse too. =)

if price is an issue, rent it.

I have gotten a few x360 games from gamefly...all x360 games so far have been 44 bcks with free shipping and also are the 59.99 games. I rent them, and if I like them I just tell them I am keeping them and they send the original box. DOA4 is 44 bucks this way. not bad.
 
Well, hovering over the ATI icon displays an incorrect temp. But the fully open console reports varying temps of 48-51 celsius when the game is NOT running. Is this normal? This is under "Graphics Processor Status".

I'll avoid the version of the game that lacks mouse and keyboard and features game-save erasing bugs, however. Thanks! ^_^

Besides, it looks OH so pretty on my PC. No graphical glitches or hangs yet. I think I'll just hold off until next weekend, where I'll open up my computer and clean it out as much as possible.
 
Yes that is a normal idle temperature. keep in mind GPUs get hotter than CPUs it seems and it is normal.

Btw when the app said your GPU is overheating, what was the temperature? Maybe you have set the warning level to something low.. 70-80C should be pretty normal for your kind of GPU under heavy stress.
 
Thanks a lot. My last graphics card was such crap, I didn't have to worry about any of these things! I hadn't yet learned how to access the console to check out the temps, when I got the warning. Though, the game did start to stutter a bit before the warning came up. I guess that's not good.
 
Dell seemed to like ATI last year. I had a choice from multiple ATIs... I took the most expensive one! :D
 
I also have a radeon 850xt(agp), and when playing CoD2, the fan revs up quite a bit, just like the first seconds of booting up the computer.

I have also noticed the fan going up in speed when playing NFS:MW

With ATI Tool you can check temperatures and control fan speeds. You can also set at which temperature the fan should speed up etc.

Can be worth checking out.
 
the Catalyst Control Center system tray icon says (0°) because that's how your monitor is rotated. That is NOT your temperature.

Double click on the icon to open the Control Center. From here, click View and make sure it's set to Advanced View. Then click ATI Overdrive at the bottom of the list. This will tell you the current temperature for your graphics card.
 
My comp reboots immediately when the demo loads unless I have it in 'Force DX7' mode :\

I have a Radeon X740XL - latest drivers
P4 3.2HT
2GB RAM

Anyone got any ideas about this? Other games (HL2, BF2, etc.) run great.
