College Football Week 11 - Team of Destiny requires 3 OTs to beat 4-5 team

Looking back on last night's game, obviously the VT defense was impressive, but the loss of Chris Thompson is definitely starting to show for the Noles. I thought we would be mostly fine with the Wilder/Freeman/Pryor combo, but we are not. They can be very good, but against a strong run D their weaknesses start to show.

Auburn turning firehoses on UGA fans after the win in 1986.

Wow.

Young Tim Brando.

It's a strange situation, but I'll be pulling for UGA to slit Auburn's throat, even though I'd rather see Florida in Atlanta. Not for being scared of UGA, but for tradition. Alabama's never played anyone but Florida in Atlanta. Won't feel the same.

So, you guys still have those Black Uniforms?

Yeah very young Tim Brando. The black uniforms are hopefully shelved for a long time. They lose their appeal if you use them once a year. I'd prefer if they give them a rest for a few more years and pull them out with a completely new class.

You guys would match up much better against Florida. They have no offense other than rushing which is your strength on defense. I'm not saying I'd love for UGA to face Bama in the CG but I feel better about our chances after seeing what a shitty quarterback did to your secondary last week. The biggest thing I'm worried about in the game is how hyped up Murray is early in games. Maybe they can hypnotize him and convince him that we're playing Georgia Tech so that he can go out there and think we're playing a patsy.

Let's see: Halo 4 launch, Presidential election, FSU winning on the road on a dreaded Thurs night game, and my G1 Optimus Prime arriving.

Yup, that's a great week in my books! :) Going to get blasted tonight.

(THU) Florida State @ Virginia Tech by 9

- People should be picking an FSU win, but not a blow out. FSU hasn't played well on the road yet this season. And while VT has been horrible, they are undefeated at home. Plus, it's going to be cold in VA tonight. Game starts at 7:30pm, I expect to be drunk by 9pm, and FSU won't pull away until mid-4th quarter.

Damn. And I had hoped my prediction was on the pessimistic side. :( VT, like every team, gave FSU it's best shot. Completely shut down the running game. ugh. The loss of talented FSU players to injury is evident.

But I'll take a 9-1 record with a smile. :)

Bonus shot of my lucky charm last night, holding my/her new (expensive) toy:

Still too young to know what's going on during the game, but she cheers when I cheer. And she's got her tomahawk chop down. :)

Freeman was the only one in the backfield with enough sense to throw the ball away instead of taking a sack.

You don't think your secondary looked suspect last week? If there's any part of your defense that has any weakness, it's that. UGA has a better QB than LSU, and our rushing numbers are very close to LSU.

I'm not saying I'd even pick my team in that game, I probably won't. I'm just saying that last week showed me that Bama is definitely not unbeatable. They have weaknesses and should have lost that game.

Sure, I mean, if you take the worst performance of the year and attribute that to mean "that's the standard of play" then, go right ahead.

I predict that Alabama will only throw the ball 15 times on Georgia, for 350 yards and 4 touchdowns. I mean, look what South Carolina did to them!

Fair enough. If you take the LSU game as an anomaly then that could be the case. I'd be more apt to make that call depending on how they perform this week against A&M. Prior to last week, Bama hadn't really been tested.

So, wer the under inflated balls only used by USC, and not by oregon? And, how does Barkley not know that the ball he has is under inflated when he picks it up? I am not sure i can believe the equipment manager acted alone in this.

I was thinking about this yesterday.

When is the last time Alabama played a team that beat them the previous time they met?

The answer right now is Auburn, since they haven't played yet this year and when they met in 2011, Auburn had won the previous game in 2010. But when Bama meets Auburn this year, they will have beaten them the year prior.

So after that, the answer is, surprisingly, Michigan. They met this year, and the last time they met was 2000 in the Orange Bowl, which Michigan won 35-34.

I tried to go further back and figure out the next one in line, but going through the schedules is quite difficult.

oops, accidentally closed the tab I had been typing on.

Think it went something like:

"Was Tennessee a Test for UGA?"

And that yeah, if A&M passes all over Bama, then it's a provable trend.

But that Alabama's style is to have longer drives on offense, giving the opponent less time to figure out ways to defeat the defense, while getting 3rd down stops, meaning less plays by the opponents offense.

That didn't happen against LSU in the 2nd half. I just find more fault in AJ having a bad game while the OC decides to keep feeding him passing plays, and digging a hole, more than LSU doing anything.

But then, I've been trained by Saban to believe that "it's what we do, more than what you do." So, I'm an asshole or something.

Perhaps the LSU experience will force Saban to use a CB for the Nickel position, instead of putting in a 3rd safety. Not sure if Saban has used a 3rd CB on the field once this year.

Striker: Maybe Missouri? They were career 2-1 against Alabama, but hadn't played in 30+ years.

Think we can beat Auburn with Blake Sim's at QB?

I want to see him at least for most of the cupcake. I know he fumbled that one Read Option, but he's looked great when he's kept it.

My only worry for that game is that the players don't take it seriously. We never seem to.

That said, yes, I fully believe Blake Sims could run the option read for the entire game and win.

I think it was more the type of running plays they were calling. Draws and sweeps and stupid stuff like that. The dline was getting way too much penetration for that stuff to work. Thompson would have been way better obviously, but if they had called the right running plays I think the game would have gone much better.

Missed this earlier:

And to demonstrate the range of a man, please also see this story from commenter macsm about meeting Royal as an awestruck child.

I was in the locker room at a golf course in the Austin suburbs waiting for my dad to come out of shower when in walked the big fella. Two 30-ish looking guys approached him and offered to buy his drink. One of them was in a UT golf shirt. The other was in a maroon and white TAMU shirt, with a matching aggie koozie. DKR asked to see the aggies Koozie because ‘it can keep my dick warm.’ Persuaded by the good grey coach, the aggie proceeded to hand him the koozie. To which DKR responded, "I’m fucking Joking, I don’t want to touch that." it was all in fun though, DKR bought him a beer and shook his hand.

I stood in awe, for one, I had never been that close to a living legend and two, I had never heard a man in 80’s say dick or fuck.

After beers The coach called for a van and walked out.

One of my friends in Gainesville just posted something about UF Homecoming, and it made me remember how fucking crazy Gainesville is. Every school in Gainesville is closed for UF's Homecoming parade. It's a fucking city-wide holiday. I remember going to high school there and getting a mystery day off for a parade that can't last more than an hour at the most. It was especially weird since I had just moved to the city that year and knew nothing about college football or UF in general. That town is fucking backwards.

It could be that Mccaron had a bad game. LSU has a really good defense, so I'm sure that played a part in it. We'll have to see. I mean yeah, you guys are still undefeated so until you lose, it doesn't matter.

Didn't realize that Saban was putting a safety out there on a receiver. That'll be interesting when UGA faces them since we like to run 3 receivers out there normally and 4 and 5 sometimes. I'm sure he'd have to put in more than 2 corners in that case.

McCarron only got sacked once, and wasn't pressured much in the entire game. There were a few times where no one would be open, but he had his fare share of bad throws (missed a wide open touchdown strike to Amari Cooper, who also didn't play much of the game), and a few passes behind the WR.

I believe the "3rd" CB we have is John Fulton, and he's been on the field less times than Nick Perry and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix.

CB1 Dee Milliner
CB2 Deion Belue
FS Robert Lester
SS Vinnie Sunseri

The next guy's in are usually: Clinton-Dix, then Nick Perry, then Landon Collins. Fulton only comes in to replace Milliner or Belue, never on the field at the same time.

In Nickel, seems like the move Sunseri to Nickel DB and Clinton Dix comes in as the other safety. Sunseri's a fine tackler, but shouldn't be out there as a cover corner.

I expect Sunseri and Mosley to be the key defenders against Manziel, though.

Finally, how many WR's does Georgia have now, after another one goes down?

That's because half the county skips to go the parade, Gator Gallop, etc. I personally think it is awesome. Although not many in high school go. I know I didn't.

Our game vs FSU may be 4-3. Or 3-2. We have something like three scholarship players on the offensive line and FSU is looking anemic now too.

Do you think he would leave TCU all of a sudden?

The drug bust that happened over the summer set them back years in recruiting.... its not far off what a death penalty would do. Now would be the time to get out unless he wants to spend the next few yrs rebuilding.

Lucky for TCU they managed to get on BCS welfare before they predictably would eventually fall apart. TCU, meet Iowa State, Iowa State meet TCU.

Are they even under any NCAA scrutiny over that? Or is it just bad juju around the program?

Rumor has it that Jameill Showers is transferring away from A&M with his likely destination being Baylor. I think the biggest hangup is Briles' requirement that all transfers to BU have a criminal record.

I imagine that at a minimum they're under NCAA scrutiny for being right on the edge of the dreaded "lack of institutional control."

Yes, no doubt he's raring to leave his guaranteed lifelong position at TCU, which just made it to a conference that will give them MNC access, for a school of insane people with absurd expectations, in a conference they will never win, and where they FOIA your phone records.

No doubt.

Seriously. It's the same set of reasons why the Peterson ship has sailed. Time to find someone new to lust after.

It makes about as much sense as Jimbo to Auburn. Auburn has been average to poor for quite some time now and will continue to be (I'm not going to acknowledge the championship they bought -- it's pretty evident how big of a sham it was). Any coach who already has a good job that moves there is an idiot -- you're just going to get your lunch eaten by Saban and co for a few years and then get fired.

For those that haven't heard, if you were a former Florida students (any college) that was on Bright Futures in 2005-2007, your personal information might have been stolen. You can use this link to see if you were: https://it.nwfsc.edu/security/_index.cfm

I was on Bright Futures in 2005 but I'm safe apparently. Phew!

Meier: They had good years under Tubby (helped along by being the only school competing in the state at the time), but yeah, once Saban came along, the well down south dried up, with future prospects looking pretty bleak.

Website with some formula to "rank" all of the WR's in college football. They talk about what they look at in the numbers, and styles of offenses, and come up with a way to "even" things out. Really, just for Stat junkies.

Obvious #1 is Obvious to USC fans.

Top 10:
USC Marqise Lee
Baylor Terrance Williams
Arkansas Cobi Hamilton
Clemson DeAndre Hopkins
Oregon State Brandin Cooks
Tennessee Justin Hunter
Boston College Alex Amidon
Arizona Austin Hill
West Virginia Tavon Austin

Alabama has 1 in top 25, but 3 in top 100. That's downright unheard of!
